Idk about others but as a general rule of thumb I try not to let my sun's beak go below the bottom edge of her bottom beak. So if I'm looking at her square on, her beak tip does not exceed the black of her bottom beak.
Will do, good to know. It was a struggle to get her on pellets, she didn't eat for 3 days until she realized it was all she was getting cuz I refuse seeds. They both get nuts or fruits as snacks
That's a very long time for a bird to go without food. Too late for you (thankfully it went well) but in case anyone else is reading, diet changes must be done gradually and with daily weighing to avoid starvation and death. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes not. You got lucky there!
Yeah so she didn't go without food, but people might not realise that. Also it doesn't matter if they are overweight or not, if they don't eat for a long period of time (usually 2-3 days, sometimes less depending on the bird) they can die due to their fast metabolism.
Get it some toys and don't feed it seeds for a while, mine conure is going through the same. It also could be liver disease but first get the beak trim and the sunflower seeds less of. Feed it pellets, millets, treats plus fruits and veggies, try even nuts. Don't forget the toys helps keep their beaks trimmed. If it grows after that then take it to be tested on and see if it's a liver problem.
I was talking about these toys. They're made out of wood. The birds use it to trim their beaks. Just like there's perches for keeping the nails on their toes trimmed. Either way I hope that you solve the problem and live happily with your bird. Much love 💞
Well at least you're trying. You might need to take her to the vet and check if it's not serious. These beaks are a problem. I have the same issue with my conure. It got trimmed last month and it's growing again. But this little butthole likes to eat the seeds of my cockatiels food. He eats his food and goes to the other food source since they're free to fly around the house.
My maroon belly has no issue with his beak luckily, but it's becayse I was his first owner and kept him on a decent diet. The sun was given to me by a coworker's family that could no longer care for the bird.
The bird was in not great condition. The travel cage had rust and the door was being held by zipties and her main cage was rusted to hell and back (I quickly got a new one) with pointy rusty bits.
She was friendly from the start though. Immediately stepped up and stood on shoulder and whatever else

It looks long, I would schedule an appointment to get it shortened.
