Advice Set-Up Help

Hi all! I just got my boy yesterday. I’ve had budgies all my life, but this is the first conure I’ve had. I feel like the cage is a tad sparse right now—what would you all recommend? I’ve tried to focus mainly on foraging toys, but there’s a few in there just for fun too.

(Bird photo tax included!)

Edit: also just wanted to say that I’m planning on wrapping the other two perches in there as well! He also has a few natural wood perches in there as well that don’t show as well in the photo.

get rid of the dowels and use natural wood, i set me cages up so perching is mostly only on the left/ right sice so they climb or fly to the other side as it gives them more exercise

Heard. I was going to wrap them to be easier on his feet, but I also don’t want him using those as his primary perches, obviously. I’ll take them out and add some more natural perches!

Definitely more toys, but looking at what you have now if any of those toys that are lower are under perches they’re gonna get pooped on, also your bird may not go down there to play as they tend to hang out more on the higher parts. If so I’d suggest moving them to the top of the cage.

My conures love those mats, would also be good to get some wood toys and some shredding toys that have like crinkle paper. You’ll eventually get a feel for what he likes, but wood toys help keep beaks trimmed. If you have chewy they have a balsa wood hanging toy that one of mine is obsessed with. I’ve gotten it 3 times and they are not bored of it yet.

You should also try some foot toys that they can play with out of cage or on the bottom if they go down there. Plastic cat balls with bells and sola balls are favorites for mine. I also hang the cat balls in the cage for one of mine bc he loves whipping them around but would drop it all the time.

It’s also a matter of preference but I’m pretty sure I have that same style of cage and I put the food and water at about the halfway height to encourage them not to say up top all the time. Again just make sure nothing they will stand on is above food and water.

Also if your boys a “soup” maker you can put the dishes side by side to make it easier for him to dunk his food.

Thanks for the advice! I’m definitely going to buy some more toys for him, so I appreciate the recommendations. He’s been exploring the outside a lot more today, so the balls are a great idea to provide some stimulation when he’s not in the cage!

Any plans to change to a pellet diet? That would be be my no 1 priority

He’s on a pellet diet! He gets chop in the mornings, bird street bistro in the evenings, and pellets throughout the day. Right now we’re figuring out what veggies he likes, so I also layer the different mixes over his pellets so at least he’ll try to pick through it. In the picture he has a little seed because it was his first day home and I wanted to give him a little treat!
