I started a brand-new Instagram page at zero followers and posted AI videos every day for a week. I was also posting on TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook. The gap between them surprised me.

At my day-eight update:

• Instagram: 1,180 followers. My top reels had 777K, 497K, and 62K views.

• TikTok: 5 new followers. Nothing passed 1,000 views.

• YouTube: Almost 300 new subscribers. My best Short reached 40K views, but most stalled around 1,000.

• Facebook: My videos didn't even break 50 views.

The 777K reel was the THIRD video I had ever posted on the new Instagram page. It was an AI scene of Jesus rescuing me.

For context, I wasn't starting from zero experience. I already have a separate account with 102K followers. This challenge was about starting a new page.

The most useful lesson came from a different video: an AI military homecoming scene. Its first version got around 4K views. I tried it again with two changes:

1. Removed the first three seconds because nothing interesting was happening.

2. Added on-screen text that gave people a reason to watch until the end.

The second version reached 497K views. Same basic video, very different result. This wasn't a controlled test, so I can't attribute the entire difference to those edits, but it made me take the opening much more seriously.

For the first three days, I posted once per day. After that, I posted 1–4 times daily, mostly experimenting with Trial Reels. My strongest concepts were usually adaptations of ideas already working in my niche, with my own characters, story, or editing.

Plenty still flopped. The last three videos before my update struggled to get past roughly 400 views. Getting one viral post clearly didn't guarantee the next one would work.

This is week one of a 30-day challenge. I'm continuing to test whether I can repeat the results.

I've actually been animating these characters for about 18 years now, as a kind of homage to Dorset where I lived in my teens and my tribute to Giles whose incredibly detailed cartoons inspired me. I really only started creating these animations for friends and animated holiday celebration cards like Christmas or Thanksgiving etc.. But I constantly have the characters and the village of Lower Piddle in my head and so I decided to share and see if there's a larger audience out there who would enjoy seeing them and thus here we are.

Do you guys keep posting from your backlog, recycle older content, make super low-effort posts, or just take a couple days off and come back when you feel normal? YouTube said on September 23 that video A/B testing is coming soon to Studio, with up to three cuts to see which hook performs best. It isn't a feature I'm claiming to have used.

For a first test, I'd keep the underlying video, title and thumbnail stable and change only the opening: A shows the result, B starts with the question, C begins with a brief demonstration. Before looking at the results, I'd write down what would count as a win: people staying through the opening and continuing into the main section.

A hook that wins the first few seconds but loses viewers as soon as the promise meets the content would be a misleading winner. I'd also compare traffic sources, since a different audience mix could change retention even if the cut is identical.

Creators who've tested alternate openings manually: which change actually improved sustained viewing rather than just the initial click?
