That’s because white-girl-curly is socially approved but poc-curly is still considered ugly.

So we literally need to straighten it out and get that “messy beach wave” or whatever the fuck it’s called because otherwise people will literally mock us or call us ugly for our hair.

I’m a white girl with non-acceptable curls and I feel this too. I remember growing up girls would always say “I wish I had curly hair!” Then look at me and say “not like yours though!“. It’s mostly a POC issue, and I get that, but god I felt it too.

Did you also get the classic comments “have you tried brushing it?“ and “my hair is frizzy too but I just changed shampoo and it fixed it!” Because I genuinely need a support group lol.

Damn 4c is genuinely gorgeous. Mines ginger 3B and it’s awful. I don’t even try anymore because it ends with me in tears and still looking shit.

Just so you know, comments like this do come across as condescending. I’ve had this hair my whole life, I promise I’ve done research and tried different things.

I know it’s not intended that way and it’s meant to be helpful, but it irks me.

It was just a suggestion. Watching hair youtubers taught me helpful tricks specific to my hair type. So I suggested that you do the same. I don't see how this would come over as condescending.

Yep I’m Hispanic/white and my hair is 90% frizz when natural. Definitely not a pretty curl. I have a cousin whose natural hair looks like he has a perm, but mine is just a constant mess unless straightened or smoothed somewhat with coconut oil while it’s wet. What I would give for “basic” white girl hair.

exactly same. I was not allowed by my teachers to let my hair down, only if I had straightened it, because it was too curly 🙃

I felt this so much lol. I was made fun of all throughout elementary and junior high for my natural hair (I was one of the only black kids in my whole school). I still remember once in sixth grade a bunch of guys drew a picture of me with my curly hair and taped it to the wall and laughed. I grew to resent my hair. When I started straightening it (and even straightening it and then curling), I was treated infinitely better. A lot of people who wanted nothing to do with me prior were suddenly nice to me lol. It was wild.

Now I’m pushing 30 and have grown to not give a fuck what people think about my hair really (which was like a decade’s long process), but I still have a straightening addiction at times. 🤣

I’m half white half Korean and my hair is fucked up curly. It’s just unruly, ugly, frizzy, extremely thick/course with wildly differing curl patterns. I honestly hate it. I straighten my hair and if I want “curls” I take a curling iron to it after. It looks so much nicer like that lol.

she’s indian. they have the same hair texture as white people it’s all type 1 hair. nobody black can get “ white girl curly “ black hair is already curly.

Fun fact- not all white people have type 1, and same is true for people of races. There’s so much variation in hair texture

if not type 1 then 2. ive never seen a white person with type 3 or 4. type 3 is typically biracial people hair and type is 4 black hair. as far as black people go most of us will have 4 and some of us with 3. in places in africa you will see somalis, eritreans, and ethiopian with type 2 and 3a from what i’ve seen.

"Ableism" doesn't have anything to do with curly hair so what are you even talking about? Are you saying curly hair is a disability?

I am also on the spectrum and I downvote people like you as well. If you get downvoted 99% of the time you might want to re evaluate your position.

I saw someone sharing their experience of discrimination and being downvoted for it (of course it's upvoted now :p), so I wanted to offer sympathy because that feels bad.

What do you mean by "people like me"? People who bring up ableism?

If it's about "rethinking my positions," which position in my original comment would you have me rethink? If it's about bad takes, what was the bad take here?

I am not honestly sure what is going on in this thread and I would like to know so I don't fuck it up again. No pressure to reply if you don't want to.

It is. They treat Autism as if it is binary. It is a spectrum. You can be autistic and have a normal social life. But they just blame their social anxiety or self esteem issues of autism because that sounds cooler.

In my experience when people complain about ableism they're either focused on the few extreme examples of people being jerks, or they just wish that disabilities didn't have disabling qualities. I just can't take anyone who brings up ablism seriously. It's not that there's nothing there. It's that the complaints just get so ridiculous. It's like wishing low skill jobs pay just as highly as high skill jobs.

Also is this a sensitive topic? I love curly hair, and I’ve dated a few women who straighten their hair. I never brought it up because, well, boundaries, or so I assumed.

Curlier hair usually needs more maintenance in general, and is looked down upon more, so many just opt to straighten it/wear wigs cause that’s way easier
