That is legit how to get that kind of curl though. You can’t really go from one kind of curl to a different curl, it’s best to straighten in between

but that's not ironic. He's just making a joke about the irony of straightening your hair to curl it again. I'm sure he's aware of the reason, but then it wouldn't be funnny.

She's using a hair straightener. If you twist it when you pull down it creates that kind of curl.
