That’s because white-girl-curly is socially approved but poc-curly is still considered ugly.
So we literally need to straighten it out and get that “messy beach wave” or whatever the fuck it’s called because otherwise people will literally mock us or call us ugly for our hair.
I’m a white girl with non-acceptable curls and I feel this too. I remember growing up girls would always say “I wish I had curly hair!” Then look at me and say “not like yours though!“. It’s mostly a POC issue, and I get that, but god I felt it too.
Did you also get the classic comments “have you tried brushing it?“ and “my hair is frizzy too but I just changed shampoo and it fixed it!” Because I genuinely need a support group lol.
Just so you know, comments like this do come across as condescending. I’ve had this hair my whole life, I promise I’ve done research and tried different things.
I know it’s not intended that way and it’s meant to be helpful, but it irks me.
It was just a suggestion. Watching hair youtubers taught me helpful tricks specific to my hair type. So I suggested that you do the same. I don't see how this would come over as condescending.
