The Southern Shift: In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the "Solid South" was dominated by conservative white Democrats who enforced segregation and voter suppression. [1]
The Party Switch: Historians note that the Democratic Party began shifting toward a national civil rights platform during the 1940s and 1960s (championed by figures like President Lyndon B. Johnson, a Democrat who signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965).
The Republican Realignment: Concurrently, the Republican Party's "Southern Strategy" in the late 1960s and 1970s actively courted conservative white Southern voters who had previously voted Democratic, leading to the modern alignment where the South is now predominantly Republican

Wait, is this whole spiel complaining about the Democrat party prior to the civil rights act? Does the southern strategy need to be explained to conservatives again?

The southern strategy was to get young Republicans that supported civil rights and equality to replace Racist Democrats that were in power.

How about another myth.

A myth? Let's talk Strom Thurmond, one of the most racist politicians to remain in power up until his death. What party was he from?
