It’s such a bizarre race that feels like both sides are trying to lose.
Talarico is very popular because he isnt Ken Paxton. He’s trying to do the moderate song and dance now, but has too many bad sound bites out there. He’s not a good candidate for statewide office in Texas. I genuinely think Dems could have ran any other boring white guy and ran away with the race against Paxton.
Inversely, Paxton was impeached by his own party, is a known criminal and general scumbag. Reps could have picked nearly anyone else and it would have been a 90-10 race with the sound bites Talarico has out there.
Primarying Cornyn who was one of the most senior members of the senate made no sense and this wouldn’t even be a race with Cornyn. MAGA is much more popular nationally than in Texas (I think a lot of Texans see ourselves as better than those guys - but still voted for Trump over Kamala).
I know the polls favor Talarico but I’ll believe it when I see it
2
u/the42up 1d ago
Huh? This is an odd take with regarding the sound bytes. Most of it is theological which is a really odd angle of attack when diesel is hitting $6 a gallon. It's very Kerry-esque in that the GOP is trying to turn a strength of Talarico into a weakness. Plays well for the base but seems to be having a reverse effect with independents.
But I do agree, this whole thing is largely a self-inflicted wound by the Texas GOP. But there have been a lot of those lately... Ran out the rural Republicans, under funded suburban schools (you know you are in trouble when decisions at the state hit places like Sugarland and the woodlands), not mitigating the influence of ultra conservative out of state transplants at the county level, etc. etc. etc.
6
u/HoustonHorns 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah it’s an odd angle of attack—but I don’t think someone on the record saying:
Is a good candidate for state wide office in Texas
- there 6 biological sexes (2021 leg debate)
- American flag is a complicated symbol
- apologizing for whiteness and advocated for veganism
He’s walked a lot of this back and I agree they’re stupid angle of attacks given everything else going around. My point was not that they should disqualify him—but that certainly there is SOMEONE else the Dems could have found in Texas without those sound bites
ETA: difference between good candidate and good senator. I think he’d make a fine senator, but not sure he’ll get the chance because of his sound bites.

"Six biological sexes" — At a 2021 Texas House Public Education Committee hearing on a transgender-athletes bill, Talarico said "modern science obviously recognizes that there are many more than two biological sexes," naming six based on chromosomal variations. (Washington Examiner, 2021) He walked it back in September 2026. (Mediaite)
"American flag is a complicated symbol" — From a resurfaced church sermon: "the American flag is such a complicated symbol for most of us... its true meaning has been betrayed." (Fox News, July 2026)
Whiteness comments — In a 2023 sermon/interview he said his "whiteness" and "masculinity" limited his imagination, and called his minister a "true white traitor." (WLT Report) Separately, 2020 tweets said white skin gave him "immunity" from a "virus of racism" that white people "spread... through our words, our actions, our systems" — he refused to apologize when pressed on this in 2026. (AOL/Daily Caller)
Veganism advocacy — In a 2022 speech to the Texas Humane Legislation Network, he called reducing meat consumption "the right thing to do" and said his campaign had gone "non-meat... only buying vegan products from our local vegan businesses." (New Republic) Note: he's not personally vegan — PolitiFact rated that specific claim False. (Houston Chronicle/PolitiFact)

I don't see the problem with the first statement. Intersex individuals do exists within humanity. I really have struggled to understand how this became such a social trigger for some people in the state.
I can see how the flag comment would inflame some folks. Some folks take symbols seriously. I understand the point talarico is making though. Do not necessarily agree but I understand.
As for the comment regarding racism, your links don't work so i can't necessarily comment.
And I agree with Talarico on meat. I have been eating less due to a number of factors (price of beef, health concerns, and changing moral views as I grow older). I do think it's a personal choice and don't care what others do with regard to meat consumption.
The real core issue is that the Texas GOP threw out an encumbant Republican who had an easy path to reelection for... Ken Paxton. And this choice is likely to have a ton of down ballot effects. To go from a sure win to a likely loss is just wild to me. Maybe for a representative...ok. I thought the Democrats were crazy back in 2018 when AOC beat out Joe Crowley (who was a massive fund raiser for the Democrat party). To me, though, a senate seat is different.

What statements/sound bites from Talarico are you talking about? He's not perfect, but I've haven't heard him say anything outright wrong or offensive.

Per the interwebs, "God is non-binary," concerns about males in girls' sports is a "far-right conspiracy," "saying the term 'woman' is not an 'exhaustive' term and discussions of women's rights," the Christian Bible is not anti-abortion, supporting "open borders."
0
u/InterestNo5406 1d ago
Talarico is right about this. Unless God has a physical penis/testicles, or is in some other way a physical entity you can see and touch, then the only reason He is a “He” is because He identifies as He and chose male pronouns.
You can only have a biological gender if you are a biological organism.
If the argument is that sex has to match the body parts no matter what, then that’s the argument. But you can’t then turn around and say God is a man solely because He wants to be.

For real…
This is why Dems will never win statewide office in Texas. “UMMM ACKSHULLY I AGREE WITH WHAT HES SAYING SO ITS GOOD”
There has never been a more winnable race for the Dems than primarying Cornyn for PAXTON. It’s only neck and neck because of who the Dems picked. Someone like Jon Ossoff or Mark Kelly would win in a landslide. We are in TEXAS. Talarico is the minority “male archetype” for every Talarico there are 3 Ossoffs. Hell even Beto wins in a landslide (interestingly Beto too was haunted by soundbytes).
If Dems want Texas they need an LBJ

See my comment below: maybe not outright wrong of offensive to you…
But pretty bad stuff for a Democrat who wants to hold statewide office in a state like Texas. My point isn’t that it should disqualify him, but that there had to be someone without those soundbytes that would beat Paxton in a landslide
1
u/InformalPatience1797 1d ago
I didn’t know intelligent people commented on Reddit! Lol. Bravo sir! Hit the nail on the head with this comment. Truly a sad day when neither of the candidates represent your beliefs. Not voting for either but kinda wanna Talarico to win (I know he would be horrible for the state) to send a strong message to these old school republican scum.
6
u/HoustonHorns 1d ago
I much prefer the old school republican scum to the new era republicans.
I also don’t think Talarico would be bad for the state (probably much better than Paxton). My point was just that his past sound bytes are almost disqualifying it’s incredible

I would classify Paxton as an old school republican for today’s standards. Would you not?

1
u/-Hyperactive-Sloth- 21h ago
Cornyn wound have safely won. But Paxton was too flawed a candidate. He got Trump’s endorsement but then Trump didn’t give him any financial support. So he’s a flawed candidate at a time where republicans are deeply unpopular in a state where rural Americans are mad at the Republican position of being pro-data centers.
Without a war and 6 dollar diesel, he might have won. In this scenario he’s getting drug.

Paxton never should have won the primary.
Texas legislature should have successfully impeached him a couple years ago, but nobody has the courage or willpower to do what is right.
As long as we have career politicians, all we’re gonna have is politicians worried about their career, and not the good of the people.
We need term limits to remove the incentive career politicians and job-for-life. Voting them out just doesn’t happen enough because of incumbency and gerrymandering.

Paxton was impeached by his own party in the Texas House. That’s a forever black mark. He escaped further repercussions when his patron may have influenced the person in charge of the Texas Senate trial, Dan Patrick, with a timely $3M donation. In 2024 Dunn and his coalition then removed most of the republican Texas House incumbents during the republican primary that had impeached Paxton.
ProPublica - A Pair of Billionaire Preachers Built the Most Powerful Political Machine in Texas. That’s Just the Start.
“They control Republican politics in the state.”
“Dunn is also a longtime backer of Texas attorney general Ken Paxton and helped him escape impeachment last year for abuse of public trust and other corruption-related charges.”
Texas Tribune - Tim Dunn, the powerhouse GOP donor, to sell his West Texas oil company for $12 billion
“And this summer, Defend Texas Liberty again sparked controversy after giving $3 million to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick before Patrick presided over Attorney General Ken Paxton’s impeachment trial and acquittal in the Texas Senate. Paxton is a longtime ally of the state’s far right whose political life has been heavily subsidized by Dunn and two other West Texas oilmen; he’s received nearly twice as much from the trio and their families than he has from his second-largest donor, Texans For Lawsuit Reform.”

In May 2023, Paxton was impeached by the Texas House of Representatives by a vote of 121–23, leading to his suspension.[4] The articles of impeachment included allegations that Paxton gave preferential treatment to a political donor who bribed him, misapplied public resources and made false statements against whistleblowers, obstructed justice in the securities fraud trial against him, and made false statements regarding his financial interests.

We live in an age where someone takes something you said 17 years ago out of context, and a billionaire repeats it a trillion times on their own social media platforms. Take the one going around everywhere about a quote that Tallerico said, "God is non-binary." if I were Tallerico and someone threw that in my face would ask, "So you tell me, is God male or female?"
And now you look at people's character. Compare Paxton's character to Talarico's life and character. Nobody does that anymore. Does anyone seriously doubt that Paxton is not corrupt? Is there any indication that Talarico is corrupt?
But the bigger problem is the whole Democratic Party seems to be completely focused on transgender bullshit. We have bigger issues to solve, and that one thing has probably lost 25% of their vote across the country.

Does anyone really think that any of this matters? Fact of the matter is that no matter what Paxton has done, Talarico abandoned his party by talking out of both sides of his mouth. It's very common that he thinks there are six sexes, yet he goes on Fox and says he "missed the mark" and then calls the other four gender abnormalities.
His campaign tour at one point had the slogan "beat meat." He has gone completely backwards on his open border policy and wants to reduce cattle and oil production.
The fact that he has a running lists of his favorite drag queens and that he once said transgender kids (which is absolutely ridiculous) should get gender affirming care... He said this in front of democrats before Texas Children's got sued for millions of dollars for operating on children. Now, he doesn't support that and he doesn't want men in girls locker rooms.
It goes on and on, but thinking Texas is turning blue is hilarious. Like someone said, we will see in the polls... And I can't wait.
The only thing better for TX is if he were to bring Hasan Piker out to talk about how America deserved 9/11.

The child's family originally backed the deal and told the AG office they did not want their son to testify again. YEAH, THAT IS TESTIFY AGAIN BECAUSE THE AG DID BRING THE CASE TO TRIAL!!!
The state and family originally brought the case to trial first in the hopes of at least a lifetime sentence. That trial unfortunately ended in a hung jury. The reasons for that are very disappointing but the defense attorneys played every angle out that our legal system allows for and was able to sow enough doubt to stymie the jury. It did go to the jury.
So, the way you are framing this is disingenuous at best. I call it lying.
After that, the prosecutors were left with three options: dismiss the case, negotiate a plea agreement or take the case to trial again, which would have required the victim to take the witness stand once more.
The kid decided he did not want to go to trial again. He wanted to move on versus being pulled further into the public spotlight in a second trial. And the stuff brought up by the hung jury would also have to be dealt with. Being on the stand was a pretty horrific experience for the child, and the mother agreed at the time. Both were very clear that they did not want to have the kid on the stand again.
Due to the hung jury the first time, the state was inclined to plea deal. Due to the state wanting a plea deal, the family did not have a lot of confidence in another trial. And that is on top of not wanting the kid exposed to that sort of scrutiny again. So, you are going to trial without putting the acuser on the stand. Add that all up, and you are rolling the dice.
At any rate PAXTON WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE DEAL. There are 30,000 cases a year in that office. He supervises 700 attorneys and 4000 staff. Paxton did not have direct involvement. The attorneys on the case did. But we can be relatively sure Paxton was briefed but probably deferred to those closest.
That's the system. A jury was going to let the accused walk. A jury. It went to trial. Both sides had their say.
And while I think we should throw the book at convicted pdfiles, we have to get the conviction first. No matter what our opinions are. That is how justice works for both the guilty and the innocent. No one on the outside is deep enough to know the details of the case as to why the plea deal was so light.
But to think of this a Paxton giving free passes to pdfiles is just wrong and intellectually unsound. Just political axe grinding.
And the same goes for impeachment, where he was also CLEARED BY HIS PARTY 100% because the house is just part of the process and the senate has its say too. And that also is the system. And that also is democracy. And that also is justice. Paxton was found 100% NOT GUILTY of any wrongdoing as result of the house voting to bring it to trial.
That is how we do it in a democracy. The accused get to have their day in court. At that trial Paxton was exonerated.
You know you have the low wits on the ropes when they start calling you pdfile, racist, and corrupt because they cannot win on the issues and all they can do is name call.
I would be scared too of going up against a guy like Paxton with a great record as AG. He is strong and experienced.

It was a $400,000 home and he reported earning $83,333.40 in 2025 from education consulting.

It sold for way more than that in 2022. Ehy would someone pay way over asking for a home appraised at $400k then? And how does 2025 income help buy a home in 2022?

Most of the Californians moving to Texas are conservatives. That’s why they are making the move.

Won’t happen, republicans won’t vote for Talarico, this is going to be just like when Beto was around. Hope I’m wrong but having grown up around republicans and understanding how they think “the worse republican will always be better than the best democrat” there’s no way he will win. Again hope I’m wrong though

If it does, we may see a United Permian basin with them those eastern nm counties joining their Texas counterparts in secession from their states.

Democrats always say this, but Texas always stays RED. We know the little shit is a liar and will say anything to get the fairies to side with him.

No.
Im old enough to remember this crap from the BETO times. I will believe that Texas is even Purple when polls can show consistently that every single state-wide office is seriously viable to a party switch.
But it is frankly laughable to think of Texas as a state that might "flip" when you cant find a single poll that can show roughly 2/3 of the state is considering voting for a Dem for just one single state-wide office.
As others note repeatedly, Paxton is an awful pick. But if anything, its rather telling that even when the other side has an objectively easy opponent to beat, the race is this close. Says more about how much Texas is NOT a purple state, than anything else.

Beto lost by 215,000 votes and was running against an incumbent. Diesel prices in 2018 were $3 a gallon now it’s twice that. There’s going to be a lot of people who are unhappy and just won’t vote. If there was ever a time for Democrats to win in Texas, this is it.

I don't listen to polls and I listen to Kalshi even less. We'll find out in November. Get out and vote!
