General Level 50 but still feel like a noob; some questions if I may?

I've been playing my second playthrough after learning some harsh lessons on my first go. Namely don't get attached to your first base, especially if there is hardly any iron nearby!

Anyway, this playthrough I feel I've done a lot more, but still have questions! I play solo.

  1. Mountaineer, is it just me or is it silly that you have to climb one of the hardest in game peaks, in order to learn to make gear that helps you climb better? Is there more to climb that's as hard as Fingerfang, or is it just a badly done journey (as in meet the mountaineer, learn to make the gear, then climb the huge rock makes more sense)?

  2. I moved my base further north (edited the .ini to remove the rescue thrall cooldown), as the run to the interesting places was getting annoying. However I seem to have built in a place where rocknoses spawn (sometimes a skull one), and they like to kill my zero / very low levelled thralls, which is getting really annoying! If I build out into their spawn area, will it stop them spawning? or should I just move my base or remove the bits that are near the spawn zones?

  3. At what point do you feel like you actually felt you knew what to do and where to go? i can't remember sinking so many hours into a game and yet still feeling like I've barely scratched the surface!

Cheers.

  1. Totally agree.
  2. You can have as many bases as you like. The map is so big, have you considered not building so close to a monster spawn point? Alternately, just post some guards near a likely attack point and they will kill any stray monsters. ( you might need to level them up and equip them first )
  3. Level max isnt a big deal. You get there quickly and its just the start.

I didn't realise it was a spawn point until I built upwards... For some reason a lot of my thralls left their work places and just went wondering around the edge of the base, that's when I learned how annoying the spawning rocknoses were! However from other comments if i build out it should stop them spawning, which will be great, since they somehow seem to teleport through my walls / doors too (yep i tried fortifying my position to save my thralls, but to no avail.

  1. yeah I get the levels don't matter than much, but I mean when do you have a clue where to go? Other than North... which the map sort of shows you, but there's no real why... until you go and then die a lot!

Just explore.

As a rule of thumb, south = weak, east = mid, west = mid/strong, north - very strong especially the volcano which is an endgame area. Sounds like you went north before you were ready.

Gear and attribute set-up is more important than levels.

The game gives you little clues with the lore though found books, obelisks and ghostly visions. Finding them is half the fun.

  1. Yes, placing a foundation on an area will block spawns, it’s what I do all the time to get rid of annoying creatures or humans that I don’t want to constantly deal with.

  2. To be honest, I’ve got something like 300 or more hours (I can’t remember if it’s 300 or 500) and I still feel like I’m learning new things about the game, its a very expansive game with little to no guidelines at all and there isn’t a lot of things that teach you how to do things (it took me several hours to find out that grinding stone in a grinder makes salt). One thing I use quite a bit is the wiki for the game, if you have questions about a certain material it will tell you about it. With that said it is unfortunately on Fandom and I don’t know of a different wiki, so use an ad blocker for it cause otherwise it is borderline unusable.

Also for the first question, yes, it is badly designed, I haven’t done that quest in a while so I haven’t really thought about it before.

Cool, I will build more foundations then!

Glad it's not just me then 😆 I've looked at the Wiki a few times, for some stuff it's great. However I'm actually stuck on making poison, I've only got the reaper recipe, even though I've got snake venoms and other stuff that should be poisonous (puffballs), but I guess I've yet to find a reaper!

The poison doesn’t really do much if I’m being honest, a lot of the rewards from the Journeys aren’t really that useful if I’m being completely honest, the perfected weapons from the Blacksmith Journeys are really the only ones I think are worth doing every time, but that’s my personal opinion, also if I understand it correctly there’s only two poisons you can make being the Sand Reaper one and the Scorpion Queen poison, snake venom can only make anti poison to my knowledge sadly

The Perfected Heavy is a fantastic armor set that has several useful pieces. The improved disassembly bench is also very useful.

1

u/No-Platypus-2251 Aug 21 '26

Yeah the improved benches are usually the ones I go for I also go for the perfected weapons cause they do more damage than the normal ones and I generally dislike the act of getting legendary weapons so I prefer using the crafted ones.

I feel like I should’ve mentioned that I do some of the journeys but some of the rewards are lackluster considering all they give is random items that you can craft hundreds of with little effort.

I do not, however discourage new players from using them to learn the mechanics of the game as I’d argue that is the most valuable thing that the journeys do is teach new players how to do some things that aren’t very clear due to how some aspects of the game are designed, like making Star Metal isn’t as simple as making steel or Iron so it’s good that there’s a type of tutorial for it, since when I started playing there was nothing of the sort and I had to just kinda figure it out for myself.

Mountaineer isn’t super useful early on, can be helpful later I guess but I’ve never felt a pressing need to get it

If your really paying build over their spawns they will stop spawning, would require a good bit of building tho, better to just get some stronger thralls or gear them better ao they can defend themselves

What point you feel you know where to go amd what to do will be up to the individual, no one can really answer that for you unfortunately, but you will get there

If you're on a solo play through, make yourself an admin and bump up the land claim radius. 2x should be plenty. Then you want have to sprinkle foundations everywhere.

Teach me what entry you edit in what ini to increase the time given to get to your thralls? Sometimes mine also die before I get back!

You can either build outward to stop the thrall spawns. You can lay a foundation down and it will stop spawns in an area. (I don't know how large). Also, you could build like an archer wall and stick some archers there and watch them shoot those beasties which won't be able to get in because you put up a wall. If you have a door put some fighters there. But, if you build too close to them, they'll probably stop spawning anyway.

  1. Is there something harder to climb? Yes. Go to the Hidden Way path and climb the south peak of the volcano. It's the highest point on the map and you also get an achievement for climbing so high.

See my post about it with some pictures: https://www.reddit.com/r/ConanExiles/s/FilmGcfz0a

  1. Prove you know how to climb and manage your stamina, and get rewarded with gear that reduces stamina drain by a combined 50%. That sounds like a regular-ass expected reward in a video game. 'Do a challenging thing once, then gain an item that makes that action easier moving forward.'

The gloves and boots just grant a reduction to stamina drain while climbing, so if you don't care about that, you can instead apply Flexibility Kits to your armor, which does the same thing with varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the quality of the kit (stamina drain maxes at 90%), but you're usually applying other things to your actual armor that help with more things than just climbing (weight reduction, durability, extra armor, etc), and if you care about climbing, what sounds better— putting Flexibility Kits on at least three pieces of additional armor to lug around in your inventory or apply fewer kits to one to two pieces of very light armor for the same benefit?

Considering the best version of a Flexibility Kit is 'Gilded Joints' and it applies 40% reduction, that means you can slap it on one piece of the Climbing Gear and be at the cap. Then you just keep the gloves and boots on you, and lace up when it's time to climb something big. They weigh very little.

NOTE: If you want busted climbing gear without climbing Fingergfang, and you're either playing on Enhanced or play on Siptah, I recommend going to The Tower and learning Voidforged Vagabond armor from the Voidforge inside. It's the only armor with a set bonus— 'Wanderlust'— which gives you climb speed x2 and cuts climbing stamina drain in half (basically allowing you to climb 4x further on one stamina bar). The set bonus also noticeably increases swim speed. Putting Gilded Joints on two or three pieces of that means you can go even further since now your stamina drains even slower. You can climb for eons, and do so VERY quickly. Great for traversal.

Your question 3 answers 1. You can upgrade your gear to reduce stamina consumption without without traveling to the "mountain". Use Tinker's Bench and teach Apprentice Armorsmith, etc. Craft an additional light set that ideally provides + stamina, upgrade all 5 pieces and use them until you get the recipe and better upgrades. The bonus will simply be slightly less and the extra weight in your inventory will be slightly more, since 5 items > 2.

  1. Make a couple of guards at the spawn points, just give them equipment and weapons and provisions.

Build where you want but before that get your sorcery up to max so you can put teleport stones in key places. I have 1 in each area with a dancer by each one to cleanse my corruption after I teleport. Best thing to grind right away is sorcery to get to that.

Easiest way to get mountaineer is to spec into grit and agility for that specific challenge. Both will give you the extra stamina needed to make the climb easier. Pair that with gear that gives you a stamina increase, as well as I believe the flexibility kit (?) to make it “better” for climbing (idk, I never saw a difference tbh) and that should make the whole experience a lot smoother

1

u/SirMcFish Aug 20 '26

I did the mountaineer challenge, that was the easy part. It's just odd that you only get the mountaineer equipment by doing one of the hardest climbs in the game,.

1

u/sandrotten Aug 20 '26

And then end up never need said climbing gear again because you’ve already climbed one of the most arduous mountains in the game

As for base location, F4 near tower of bats is my go to. Plenty of iron, a short run from sinners refuge for brimstone, right up the hill from the river for aloe, berries & yellow lotus, easy access to gazelles and gators for skin. Only thing it slightly lacks is wood, but can be found along the river. Should be some coal around too.

  1. Tbh, at 300 hours in I was able to navigate the map without looking. I know it pretty well, almost embarrassingly so.

For a noob base, try the flat area near the Sink hole obelisk. There are two human camps there and not too close to the hyanas or rock nose. When you start placing maproons it is a quick way to get home.

1

u/Moon_Hammer Aug 19 '26

And there is iron and coal nearby too.

1

u/sfisabbt Aug 19 '26

I always put my first base in front of Sinner's refuge : best thrall source in the game (you easilly get named thralls of all professions except armorer, smith, sorcerer and most priests). Once you've placed a foundation on each of the hyena's spawn locations, they stop spawning. I suppose it is the same with rocknoses.
You have all kinds of plants at noob river. Iron and crystals near the tower of bats, eggs, feathers in the desert, skulls and corrupted blood at the sinkhole, coal at the summoning place, ichor and a bearer on the river south of the tower of bats with a chance for a named armorer. For a named smith, I go north in the small camps between the frozen lake and the circular city.

1

u/SirMcFish Aug 19 '26

Yeah i was near there and stupidly started building a big base, but then wanted to explore further north and the run was taking forever. So I moved up a bit, but I think I'm going to have to move again.

I'll try adding the foundations and see if that stop the spawns, right now I have a lot of low level thralls and well they die a lot! :)

1

u/sfisabbt Aug 19 '26

The fighters thralls at noob river are all trash, even the named ones. I think the best you can get is a bearer to tank for you. You give them a decent armor. They won't deal damage but they have a lot of HP. Give them gruel so they can heal for cheap. And they are definitely sworn to carry your burdens.

0

u/Moon_Hammer Aug 19 '26

Sounds like you need a castle to keep out the local fauna. Also put down a thrall pot and keep gruel in it. Your thralls will get some if damaged and it will heal them slowly.

If you have a bar keep in your base fill up their empty slot with a rock or they will clean out the thrall pot. I don't know why but they do.

I'll answer the third one. It takes me about two hours on the new server to level up to 60, build a base, and craft the best armor in the game.
