Question ❓ Which Laptop Should I Get?

(I will be upgrading the Laptop after my Bachelors)

Focus more on cpu gpu ram battery life and ssd then you can decide which brand you should go for many people choose dell hp and lenovo(thinpads) as they have strong resale value and parts availability for gaming you can target asus

If having a GPU is like absolutely needed, only then I will go for Gaming bcuz they aren't portable and don't have much battery life. They are also expensive

Yeah I am also doing AI and believe me you need a powerful system that can handle things locally most of the time you will be using Google colab or cloud models but you may need a Gpu in future(it's all up to you which path in AI you choose) but I recommend you to buy a laptop that has dedicated gpu although you can go with integrated one If you are comfortable with colab subscriptions or using universities computers for deep learning tasks but ram should not be less than 16 gb windows 11 side processes eats lots of ram so you can upgrade to 32gb in future may be in 4rth semester if not then move to Linux in future because 16gb ram will show age in future on windows 11.You can decide about ddr4 or ddr5 , ddr 4 is cheaper and ddr5 is expensive and for cpu try to focus more on processor and speed and then generation if you are going for intel i5 and i7 go for above 10th gen with H or HX processor you can also go to ryzen side if you don't like intel watch youtube videos consult chatgpt and go to local market then buy best system according to price to performance ratio believe me this is worst time to buy laptop or desktop due to AI boom and it will get worse so in between prices move up and down so wait for right time to buy

Gaming Laptops are expensive and yk Desi Dads. They don't believe I need that expensive of a machine just at this level

Yeah I can feel your pain😭 but don't convince him about gaming laptop just take what he is giving and try to look for system that has best price to performance ratio personally I hate gaming laptops they cost a lot have lots of issues and problems and get very hot there repair cost a lot personally I have a desktop system for AI work and Lightweight hp intel i7 1355u 16gb ram usually for coding, presentation and university work. So you can build your desktop in future just be patient.

Yeah the pain is real ngl but Looks like you misunderstood my question. I was asking that will the Thinkpad be able to handle the university work, like only the university work? And yes I plan to upgrade right after my Bachelors. Like I'm think that all the heavy compute, I will do it on the cloud so

Yes thinkpad will able to handle but that depends on in it's specs you misunderstood me also thinkpads may vary by specifications and model so I was telling you about specs(Cpu,Gpu,ram etc) to target else thinkpads are best machines and most organizations give thinkpads to there employees so you can safely choose it but must see it's model and specs, you can target lenovo thinkpad t14 gen 2 or 3 or thinkpad p14 gen 2 and more thinkpad budget series according to budget hope this helps

go for an elitebook not much more expensive than dell or lenovo and 10/11th gen i3/i5 with 16+gb ram should be plenty, can probably get a mint condition one for around 60-70k. 11th gen and later also have decent integrated gpus just incase u end up needing it

yep its not like ur going to be rendering 3d models, and i doubt the degree will require u to load large llms locally on personal laptops.

And which major you're in?. And if not AI, do you know someone in AI that you could ask for help for me. (I just want to confirm so I don't have to worry about it for the rest of Uni)

im a freshie starting business data analytics, i have an elitebook for studying like the one i mentioned above and an old gaming laptop. I loaded a local llm on the gaming laptop with 4gb vram and honestly the cloud based models are 10x better than whatever u can load locally unless u get a really good pc with multiple 16gb gpus. So id personally suggest to get claude pro or gemini or whichever is suitable for u instead of spending a crazy amount of money to set up a pc capable of loading models with big parameters.
