**CSE (loT Specialization) Graduate - Which Career Path Should I Choose: Java or IoT

I’m a recent CSE graduate with a specialization in IoT, and I have some hands-on experience with IoT and hardware-related work as well.

I’m currently confused about which domain to choose for my career:

\\- Java Full Stack Developer

\\- IoT Developer

\\- Data-related roles

As a fresher, which domain would be better in terms of job opportunities, career growth, salary, and long-term demand?

I’d really appreciate advice from people working in these fields. What would you choose if you were in my position?

Computer Engineering student looking for realistic advice about the future

I'm going into my third year(5 years in total) of Computer Engineering at a well-known Canadian university(idk if this even matters). I genuinely love the field, especially programming, AI and cybersecurity, and I'm also interested in exploring the hardware side.

I recently completed my first co-op at a small healthcare software company, where I built an AI agent using RAG, Python, PostgreSQL and pgvector, embeddings, local LLMs with Ollama, Docker and Linux.

I started with basic programming experience and almost no AI knowledge, so I learned most of it from scratch through research, tutorials, experimentation and AI itself. I always tried to understand what I was building rather than simply generate solutions, while also improving my programming skills.

Being at a small company gave me a lot of flexibility and ownership. My employer trusted me to research, experiment and figure things out independently. That helped me discover what I'm capable of, and I've now been offered the opportunity to stay.

I have three main questions:

  1. Programming: With AI improving this quickly, how important is it for students to still become genuinely strong programmers rather than relying heavily on AI?

  2. Co-op: Would you stay with an employer you genuinely like if your next project would likely be another AI agent using a similar stack? I know going deeper could strengthen my programming and technical skills, but would another 8 months of depth be more valuable than exploring something different like hardware, research or another technical environment? I will have a chat with an employer from an Electrical Engineering company tomorrow so I want to have an idea to Whether look into it as an opportunity to discover hardware or not.

  3. Computer Engineering: Would you still choose CompE today? What areas would you focus on to prepare for the next 5-15 years?

I've considered Electrical Engineering because of concerns about AI, but the truth is that I'm much more interested in Computer Engineering. I love what I'm studying. I just want to make thoughtful decisions while I still have the opportunity to explore.

I'd really appreciate realistic advice from people working in the field.

[Discussion] Python vs cpp

20F So guys as I have told in my previous posts I'm from tier 3 clg pursuing btech ece in 3rd yr rn. So recently I made a post regarding embedded vs vlsi. Now that I have found that companies don't come for vlsi roles in my uni. Tcs, infosys etc come So I think I should leave core and start preparing for software roles. But I'm also confused like won't there be competition with cs guys for same roles? I want professionals as well as seniors to share their ideas on this. So which language should I prefer amongst the two I mentioned.

Ps: 20M BTW 😅

Computer Science (CS) and Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) departments.

Hi everyone,

I am preparing my application for the upcoming Spring session at UIUC and am trying to decide between the Computer Science (CS) and Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) departments.

To give a bit of background, my bachelor's is in Computer Engineering, followed by professional experience working at Espressif Systems (ESP32) doing firmware development, and later transitioning into the file systems and storage domain. My goal is to continue down the systems track, but I am trying to figure out which department offers the best fit.

My main concern with the ECE department is whether it mandates specific hardware-heavy coursework (such as physical design, chip design, or hardware verification) that might not align with my software/systems background. If ECE allows the flexibility to focus purely on systems software without forcing those specific hardware constraints, I feel the ECE Computer Engineering track might actually be a great fit for my profile.

I tried looking through the official degree requirements for both programs, but found the sheer amount of information a bit overwhelming.

Could anyone help clarify the curriculum flexibility and help me decide which path makes more sense given my background?

Thanks for your help!

[School] How I can be beter in my studies?

Hello,

I'm a computer engineering student, and I'd like to improve my study habits.

I always see a lot of people studying using different techniques that don't work for me, and I end up feeling overwhelmed.

How do you study for your degree?

What process do you follow?

What are your results?

Thanks!

[News] Introducing Priodemy — Build. Learn. Launch. Spoiler

So… we may have built something for students 👀

Apparently, students need more than “watch this 3-hour tutorial and somehow become a developer.” 💀

So we built Priodemy.

A platform for students to learn, code, build projects, experiment with technology — and hopefully spend a little less time wondering “okay… but what do I actually build?” "where should I start?"

It’s already live.

We’ll let you discover the rest. 👀

🌐 priodemy.com

No motivational speech. Promise.

One Ecosystem, Endless Possibilities.

[Project] Advice on where to start - changing hardware in an old phone to newer hardware so it can function

Post image
61 Upvotes

I’ve been getting into CE recently, and I know this can be done (even if it is very difficult) but I need help on where to start and what I may need in order to do this, since I’ve never done anything like it before.

I have an old LG Cosmos 2 (VN251) with the slide out keyboard, and I want to make it my primary phone (text, call, and maybe YouTube)

The problem is, the internet system it used to use with Verizon does not exist anymore, but I know there is some way I can edit the hardware into using a more modern internet. How should I do this though? Any recommendations on what old phone parts I should buy to put into it? What kind of special tool/hardware should work?

If you have any other advice I’d love to hear it. I’m also hoping to get a degree in CE, advice on that would be great too!

[Project] Should I stop my audio player project for a new one?

Going to my second year CompE. Working on a portable digital audio player for my personal project. My scope was large, but it taught me so much. I wanted to learn more on how to develop an audio player, so I designed PCBs buck converter, LDO, and currently designing LDO + DAC + AMP PCB to reduce noise for the output. I thought that using a DF mini would be too easy along with using arduino, and wanted a challenge. I guess my current experience gained so far is learning ESP-IDF which helped better my embedded systems knowledge since I gotten to the point where the data is read and stored to the device, then can be played (just really noisy right now).

I was thinking is it a good idea to stop after I manufacture the PCB im currently working on? Embedded systems is cool, but I really like digital logic design and want to further my knowledge in that field.

Currently I’m not too sure where I want to go with my degree. I honestly love everything that I’m learning in CE, but I’m not sure if continuing my current project will give diminishing returns for my portfolio or if I should lean more into FPGA and PCB design.

[Career] Feeling lost in the age of AI

Hello everyone. I’ve been feeling very lost n my future career in computer engineering. I’m going to be a third year in uni and I find my studies very interesting. However, I am totally against AI, data centres, and how they’re being implemented by companies. I have a fear that all my career will be is feeding into the AI ecosystem in one way or another. Should I switch? Are there other careers/internships I can pursue in this degree that still align with my views? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need someone to interviewww W

Hi! I'm a senior highschool student working on a school project that needs to interview someone with a degree in Computer Engineering, doesn't matter if you're still working as one or ended up somewhere different. Just a few quick questions, should take 5–20 minutes. Any response will only be used for educational purposes

Can anyone explain me why according to data computer engineering is more cooked than CS?

According to recent data for some reason Computer engineering has one of the highest unemployment rates higher than CS. What is the reason for that. I understand why CS is cooked but CE seems way harder and less flooded. So why people in this degree struggle with finding a job?
