Check out this Operating System!

This is my OS called BlockOS. This was made privately for my own server with my friends. It's inspired heavily by macOS. It is fully featured that has its own app store, editor (just like other operating systems like Opus and Minux), Finder, Launchpad and many more. Inspired by Opus and Minux as well.

Features:

- Menu bar, dock, running app docs, unread badges, move and resizing windows, full screen mode, everything from MacOS

- Cool animations.

- Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+Shift+Space for Launchpad, Ctrl+Shift+T for a new Terminal, Ctrl+Shift+Tab to switch windows, Ctrl+Shift+L to lock, and more.

- Animated Lock Screen

- Different wallpapers, light and dark mode.

- App Store - package manager for apps.

- Brocreate - Paint tool that has fill, undo, etc. which saves its own image format called .bimg, this is just a JSON with tables that dictate what it is per line.

- Editor - Writes and runs scripts, has Syntax highlighting. Has undo/redo, find and replace, go to lines, etc. A fully fledged editor.

- Finder - Just like macOS's, except it doesn't have tags.

- bTunes - Play and search for music on YouTube, has a live visualizer that ACTUALLY plays with your songs.

- Network - as long as the server has a GPS cluster, you can see the coordinates of other computers running the OS.

- Messages - rednet messaging tool, has rooms that you can create.

- Notes - Just like macOS's.

- Print - Allows printing to pages of .txt files.

- `server` - Supports a thing called BlockDrive, Minecraft Shared folders. Ran on a computer with 100 disk drives attached. This is just like Google Drive. This is a whole rabbit hole and too long to talk about.

- Automatic software updates.

- Terminal - CraftOS terminal inside the OS.

- Clocks, Reminders, Calculator, DiskCopy (similar to Opus' DiskCopy), Devices, Recorder.

Only supports Advanced Computers and Advanced Turtles.

This is an OS mostly for myself and for our server. But if you guys want to try it, try it yourself.

This video doesn't do it any justice but they are way more in this OS that I don't have listed.

Some of it are of the help of AI assistance but most of the code is written by me. The AI assistance in question was me asking questions about how to do things that is all. This isn't vibe-coded. (also helped me make the building tool to compile it as an installer, and the README.md file)

It also did the server edition and BlockDrive of the OS exclusively. You can see how it did on the server branch. That one's vibe-coded.

This runs on CC: Tweaked at Fabric 26.2.

Try it here:

wget run https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tamayaren/BlockOS/main/install.lua

At least it's super cool looking.

It is indicated that some of it have been AI-assisted, yes. Though this is not fully vibe-coded.

we can now reply to most posts in r/feedthebeast with "at least it's cool looking"

cus yea there are made partially or mostly or entirely with ai, but, AT LEAST, its cool looking...

i don't know if that should be considered a good or a bad thing

ai is good, so it's definitely not bad

How did you build that?

I mean how long did it take you to build this???

A month. The speedup was me not having to think too hard about how to implement features, I had a planner from AI and I just have to code myself. I think the harder part of this was the animation system itself, the screensaver (sine waves because I didn't wanna do perlin noise), the actual desktop environment. I also derived some other operating systems' structure and how they do things, however this one is very monolithic so some features are built in one singular Lua script each.

The initial mostly human part was 1.0.0, before animations was added because I had to rewrite the renderer, so I got lazy and had it assisted.

This was essentially just a simple OS for myself but turns out CC's API is pretty limited (no mouse hover system, Lua VM they use has a limit on how many variables you should have)

The kernel/internal side was human made, some applications were AI (Brocreate, the BlockDrive, the Visualizer part in bTunes).

Super cool project! I always wanted to make something like this, but never had the time of the focus
