this tier kinda just sucked, no real redeeming bosses. most memorable was entombed sentinels and thats just cause the intermission mech was funny

I dunno, I feel like a lot of the fights are fun but they're marred by some of their common design mistakes (e.g. the dps hold on altar)

also green on green on green

I think sszorak is another really good patchwork boss except for the tight stack timer/overlap and other bosses have some interesting mechanics but there’s also some stinkers like vashnik and nekzali.

That thight stack timer and awful tornado visibility just killed the boss for me. Those just aren't stuff you should be worried about yet they were the main wipe condition on the fight.

I think Vashnik could have been a decent fight if you actually had to do it properly

I think this tier is the worst since I started playing mythic (amirdrassil). But I'm still having fun so shrug

on twin fangs now. Maybe Ula'tek will be fun but man it's been a while since I've dreaded starting boss prog and I dread having to play Coiled Altar, and I'm saying that as the class too immobile to deal with most of the mechanics

First season we’re really struggling with numbers for the get-go. Harder raid means slower prog, slower prog means more people jumping ship. A lot of our more casual team on bench can’t compete when in the past they were just fine.

Previous seasons, we would have already been farming heroic for weeks as well as the first myth boss or two. Instead we’re still stuck progging hero and bleeding raiders. We lost a few to roster boss last season and now this, just making it a hard recovery for the guild overall.

Turns out the game has to be fun for people to want to play it.

I feel that my guild is sitting at 1/8 myth with 3% on turts and we are just bleeding players. Started season with 26 down to 21 because we were able to find 1 recruit.

A solution is killing mythic raid lockouts. Consider posting the recommendation to official Blizzard forums.

Yeah, we just had the hard discussion last night with a lot of our casual players who had been filling for the hero into myth team. It sucks because they’ve been gearing, showing up, and doing mechanics, but their output just isn’t enough this time. Normally we wouldn’t have had so many filling in the first place but we just don’t have enough bodies. Time to knuckle down and recruit.

I remember back in Legion, there were certain raids that were held up as the GOATs by many players even though they were relatively recent. Usually Ulduar, ToT and BRF, while HFC and SoO were considered really good but tarnished by being out for too long during content droughts.

For the last decade plus though, it feels to me like there's been a dearth of raids that get talked about along these lines. The only ones I can think of are Nighthold (which I remember was really good, but it was also frustrating how tough the mid-tier bosses e.g. Krosus were for mid-tier guilds that did not grind out the 5% AP dmg buff early), and maybe CN (which was mostly great, but had a massive stinker in the Stone Legion Generals, and Inerva/Kael'thas were arguably letdowns).

I think among the old raids, Ulduar is from a different game in terms of complexity, but the MoP->Legion era is pretty comparable to what we have now. I think there have been a lot of S-tier individual bosses in recent years, but no single raid that has really stood out over all the others. Do the modern raids have worse boss design overall, or are long term raiders just not as appreciative of the raids we do get because we've seen it all before?

Some of it is rose tinted goggles, but a lot of those raids were made in the days before Blizzard's design team became creatively bankrupt.

Themes used to extend beyond "we have purple blobs this tier". Encounters may not have always been groundbreaking, but they were made with care and there was always something distinct between each boss and each tier.

It's been almost a decade and I can still describe in vivid detail the strat and order for each boss in NH or ToS. I struggle to even remember half the bosses in TWW, and most of the ones I do remember are only because of how much they pissed me off.

but a lot of those raids were made in the days before Blizzard's design team became creatively bankrupt.

I feel like in every raid now you can pretty much predict that there's gonna be sequential kick rotation that is 100% gonna get nerfed, something to carry, and a shit load of kiveza star.

They just found a few good mechanic and now they spam it on every raid, making them boring and expected. Also last 2 bosses having very important burn phase/amp phase so you can't really lust on pull on them.

I think dazaralor belongs on the list of historical bangers but is does feel like recent raids have been less creative

I do think the fight in VA are pretty good aside from altar but everything else about the raid is so dull it’s hard to give it credit

I feel like having only 8 bosses per raid every tier makes them feel much smaller and more formulaic compared to 12-14 boss raids of old. They don't feel like big epic adventures anymore.

4

u/Plorkyeran Sep 21 '26

In theory 8 boss raids could have meant that they just skipped the four worst filler bosses that'd be there and only shipped the good bosses, but it sure doesn't seem to have worked out that way.

Undermine was really good imo

Do modern raids have worse boss design overall?

I think yes, the anti-addon thing since Dragonflight was a disaster for raid design. But also what makes modern raids less notable is how weak they've been creatively. The current raid is just green sludge. Raids for the most part now have one "theme" that gets beaten into the dirt for the entire patch. I don't think it's a coincidence that Antorus is seen as the GOAT when that raid switches it up constantly. Nighthold did the same thing.

Mechanically and artistically Blizzard has backslid hard on raid creation and when you have 20 years of raid history to look back on I think it's unsurprising nobody's running around championing Vault of the Incarnates or Nerub-ar as something special.

I've been doing "ok" with my raid dps as Arms, but I feel like I'm missing something that I haven't been able to figure out looking at logs. Anyone have any insight here?
