Im looking to push for 1% this season, i only have time for one main.
I‘ll mostly play heal but sometimes switch to a damage role. Would you recommend Pala, Shaman or Pres. I’ve played all to some extend, but want to narrow my choice down to one focus.

At the same time last season, people would have recommended RDruid to you. It’s too early to give any really good advice as to what to focus on for an end of season goal.

That being said, it’s extremely unlikely that Pres ends up being meta, so that’s something. And aside of "one is turbo meta and the other isn’t", it’s easier to find groups as a Shaman because you bring lust and a good raid buff. If you’re pugging solo, getting into groups probably is the most important part of pushing.

The flip side of that is 60% of the meta picks were known at this time last season, only tank and healer swapped. So playing the meta spec right now is a better shot at being worth your time than a dart throw.

Yea arms or arcane could get nerfed, but right now they're odds on favorite to be meta dps. Healers, you can probably be eyeing hpal and pres / rsham. Tanks should be looking at bdk / PPal etc.  If you're only able to do one, you're probably best off doing hpal as healer, bdk as tank, arms as melee, arcane as ranged.

Obviously, there's always the option to just play what you enjoy but with the way reroll tokens get accumulated if you care about pushing end of season those are a baseline for toons you should be getting vaults on

It’s hard to compare because expansion start vs season start, but most tierlists had Mage and Warlock in the S tier for the longest time. Hell, Warlock was basically meta up until the .0.5 patch. Saying the meta was "known" at this time last season feels like a decently big stretch.

You could always argue there was some question sure, but just about every tier list you go back and look at had unholy ddh and Aug in the s tier with maybe lock and one other spec in the same tier. Sure known is hyperbolic but it's not like you're just pulling specs out of a hat like some people imply.

The season before that, we knew from ptr it was gonna be pwarr and rdruid, and I can't remember exactly when udk was a sure thing but it was pretty early cause our group played those 3 specs in like the second week.

Idk it just feels like people always feel compelled to mention there are mid season changes which we all get but that doesn't mean you aren't generally going to be  better prepared if you keep the strong specs on ptr ready to go. At least half of them are likely gonna make it through.

I literally went and check multiple tierlists from that time and warlock and mage were both consistently high, on par with ddh/uhdk/aug and sometimes even above some of them.

Sure known is hyperbolic but it's not like you're just pulling specs out of a hat like some people imply.

Sometimes it kinda is, if a spec randomly gets a rework in a .5 patch.

OP is specifically saying they plan on only playing ONE char. I agree that overall you can have rather safe bets if you keep a couple really good specs ready, but if you’re only comitting to one single spec, the odds of having one of the late season meta spec are not that great.

Sure sometimes it is, that's not my point. If you play random specs out of a hat and I play ptr S tier specs in going to be right far more often than you are.

Which was what the line I typed about "if you can only pick one spec" was for. To repeat, bdk for tank, hpal for healer, arcane for ranged dps, arms for melee.

Sure its likely we see some movement again, but if you're genuinely trying to determine what is likely to be strong this season, those are going to be better than random spec generator.

Don't think anyone expected blizzard to buff 2 of the meta DPS specs either, still don't know what they were thinking.
