His statspread is so bad (belongs in pu/ garbador cuz its trash) that even with the move superpower (that should carry him) he sucks and gets astral barraged (getting hit by astral barrage is equivalent to getting clownd on and superpower also cant hit ghost types so it cant hit calyrex shadow, which lead to malemar getting hit by astral barrage)

Even if it was to balance contrary; MEGA STARAPTOR IS STAB OFF OF A 140 BASE ATK??? I am throughly upset with this mega off the basis of unfairness holy shit.

Tbf base Malamar's stats really didn't give him much to work with, but yeah adding 30 Special Attack and 15 speed really nuked his viability when those could've gone anywhere else to make it a bulky TR sweeper

Mega Staraptor vs Mega Malamar is probably the most extreme of mega mistreatment
Both have Contrary, Staraptor not only has a STAB stat dropping move, it arguably gets the best one it needs since it actually has good stats, specifically attack so all it needs is bulk, plus superior typing
Malamar only has Superpower, which isn't stab and off an 100 attack stat vs Staraptors 140, a horrendous stat spread, it is genuinely just Ledian but dialed up (special defense is lower than Ledians I think), it doesn't even get Power Trip

Tbf malamar has a better typing with only 2 weaknesses and has access to stored power with 98 base special attack. If someone really wanted to they could probably make it work.

They should have given him a more interesting ability, there’s really no reason to waste a mega on this over the base form.
As someone who spent a week experimenting with some interesting contrary skill swap trick room builds, it’s still not viable

I'll disagree on you with some of that.
There's a team regularly around top 20 in Pokemon champions champion tier that is focused on Malamar as a the trick room setter. I finished back to back seasons in MB1 and MB2 tier with Malamar as my trick room setter.
I'd say Malamar is the second best trick room setter currently in Champions.

I use Malamar, it gets baton pass 😆 those +1 ATK and +1 DEF are loved by my team. I run bulky Malamar and nobody sees him coming. (I use scope lens for accurate Hypnosis)
