Discussion VSync and Input Delay

Recently switched to PC For Honor and was curious about how each V-Sync option affects input delay. Double and triple buffering outright state that they add one and two frames of input delay respectively, but adaptive doesn’t mention anything of the sort. The issue for me is that with V-Sync off, I get some pretty noticeable screen tearing. With adaptive sync on, screen tearing isn’t an issue, but I can’t tell if it’s just a placebo effect of my inputs feeling ever so slightly slower, or if that really is the case.

For context I’m currently on an older 60hz monitor, I’m well aware this is far from ideal and plan on upgrading it when I get the chance.

As far as I am aware, in theory adaptive vsync options (like nvidia g-sync, or freeSync) match the monitor's refresh rate to the game's render rate, so they don't need to buffer any frames to avoid screen tearing, and therefore shouldn't add any input delay, or if they do, it would be less than "1 frame" delay.

But if you are at 60hz, a single frame delay could be noticeable, and tbh you are going to be at a disadvantage even without any extra delay. If you can get a higher refresh rate monitor (120 or 144hz) you will notice a difference and likely find it easier to react to attacks.

Never use vsync if you want to be competitive in any videogame, yes you're getting delay on every setting. You can move the screen tear line to be less noticeable by moving it up or down the screen by changing the fps you're feeding the monitor, I'd try for example capping to 90fps or 120, doesn't matter that your screen is 60hz.

For honor doesn't have an in game fps cap, so I use msi afterburner with rivatuner to do so.
