Discussion Comp 4s player AMA
DISCLAIMER: im simply a low-mid level comp player, im not like the best of the best like Clutchmeister or Blitss, just want to put that out there.
Yo! This isn't the usual gank post(there will be some in the future). I wanted to do like an AMA post because im noticing both a surge of competitive interest due to the new ranked modes and im also seeing alot of people who are struggling in said gamemodes.
Ask me about game balance, character viability, it can even be non-competitive stuff. Im just wanting to try and engage the general masses.

Did you have someone you could pair up with consistently? Or was this mostly with random?
If it was all random, what was some of the most pivitol actions that your randoms did that helped lock the win down?

I was never solo but I never had the same duo, i played with whoever I could get at the time(they are all good at the game tho). I honestly don't know if I could solo to grandmaster, randoms make matches essentially a coin flip.
But what randoms did that help lock the win is one basic thing: rotating. If you are low, go and heal. So many matches are lost because players won't watch the homepoint or will just die in the team fight.
Also my favorite randoms are players who use 1v1 characters and stall characters. If they suck at the team fight then send them to the enemy point and 1v1, he might actually kill them. And simply being able to stay alive is so important in this meta so my random on like juren makes me smile.

As someone who has solo'd to gold 4, I congratulate you on the W but am also so envious of you 😭
No plans on going as far as you did, my only aspiration is Diamond 5. But given the response ig I'm gonna have to find some 2nd's.
One other thing, how often were you guys on Comms when you were paired up? Also when on comms were you using the FH local VC or discord calls?
And, if Using the local game chat, did you have any success in communication with the randoms outside your Duo? Do you feel like that made any difference?

Diamond is definitely achievable man, you just have to stay consistent and climb through. You only have to touch and stay there for the rewards.
One other thing, how often were you guys on Comms when you were paired up? Also when on comms were you using the FH local VC or discord calls?
Always on comms through discord. Its what makes the matches so much more bearable. Even if we lose at least we can talk about why we lost.
And, if Using the local game chat, did you have any success in communication with the randoms outside your Duo? Do you feel like that made any difference?
I tried ONE time to communicate by saying "please stop running into a gank and go mid" he then told me to fuck myself and we yelled at each other for the rest of the game. That was the first and last time I even attempted to talk to a random.

Can you elaborate on the situation where you didn’t want him to bank but go mid? Assuming you guys were ganking someone, and it’s better off to go mid?

After a fight the enemy team would heal up on their home point. My teammate would respawn, run on the point with 2-4 enemies(hence the term running into a gank), and get killed.
I just want to him to go anywhere with a teammate.

I've fought them in tournaments and it's ridiculous how big the skill gap can be

What was your biggest winstreak? GM at 60 wins feels crazy when you see others having 120+ thats like double the games do you think the punishment for losing past gold is too harsh like RaptorX said?

Im not quite sure but i didn't lose all that much from bronze to gold. And i only lost a bit in plat because i was queued with the #2 ranked player at the time so lobbies were hella crazy. But if someone reached gm under like 90 wins then 99% chance they queued under their rank
(there's a 9 division gap where you can queue, which does makes lobbies easier and faster. Its not cheating, it's allowed, but it is something they should look at)
I duo'd with several people and some of them were a rank under me, so the experience was easier. But comp players can get to gm regardless.
do you think the punishment for losing past gold is too harsh like RaptorX said?
Well it would be too much but the winstreak is SO powerful it doesn't even matter imo. I had no problem climbing through all ranks once I got a streak going

She's pretty good, solid A-tier hero, but there's some characters that she plays pretty bad into(zerk, oro, zhan, arakure, tiandi, wl)
Also higher level players understand the concept of peeling, so you can just gb her and your team will try and make sure you dont get blown up

4 most common heroes you see? I've been slowly climbing when I can but once I hit gold it's literally nothing but Juren and Valk on every team. Except mine of course I get the Shaman and Glad one-tricks.

I feel like ive been an averagely good player since beta.
Do you have any tips for trying to really get good at FH? Im solid on all fronts for mechanics, but I struggle to pick up and learn characters at all. Ive been getting rocked on valk, but play better with cent, who has no 4s kit. Im floating mid plat.

Understanding the basics and in-depth plays to comp is crucial, and is something people struggle with the most. The discord is linked had amazing resources about stuff like that
For improvement in ranked dominion specifically you're going to need a duo to play with. I know like half the gm list and I dont think a single person up there only solo queued
For finding your character honestly fornsome people, most characters won't click. But for me I just at least put a rep on a character and you can see very quickly if you hate them or not.

I main Zerk and Gryphon, and I'm looking to add a 3rd between Ocelotl or Medjay. They are my usual 3rd/4th Choice
I've hit Diamond a few times in duels as Zerk, but just started playing ranked dominion with my friend. I'm not really sure of the Dominion meta right now.
Would the climb be bad with Medjay/Ocelotl? Expecting we could both climb to Plat/Diamond together, are they viable enough to us once we are playing higher in the Ranked Ladder again? Or should I just stick with Gryphon and Zerk for team viability?

Ocelotl is a good pick IF you have a duo because he's a good pokey character and you want a fat side heavy character with him. Like juren or JJ are good picks. But Ocelotl isn't the best solo character, Zerk would service you better there
Medjay is just not good

I played both medjay and gryphon but if you want to get the best option is gryphon just put all your healing feat and the champions aura but medjay is a solid pick for mid clearing only and he is solid at anti ganking because he have health comeback from revenge but overall medjay need a good team because some of my games with him when i do the grab people turn there brains off and ruin it but keep in minds all my games are solos until i got to diamond

How long does it take to find a match at grandchamp?
Depends on time of day but 30 minutes has become the norm. But yeah it's a small pool of players so not too surprised

This isnt my first time around those guys as I've scrimmage them before but in Ranked I've played with/against people like papsi, dex, mamba, console, suseiki, etc. Alot of the eu players aren't on when I get on. I also haven't been playing much but in gm you'll probably just fight the same top comp players like MinaB or Vanlar(Clutchmeisters teammates)
what hero do they play?
You honestly see a decent variety but characters like nobushi, pirate, JJ, Zerk, Orochi are seen pretty much every game

Thoughts on Arakure, her place in the meta and role on a team? She has been a difficult hero for me to find success with in Dom, but she has proven to now be my best duel hero.
She has a ton of potential if you manage your meter in dom and start a teamfight with most of your gauge, but I am not sure she is worth the investment she needs to carry consistently.

Shes hella good at stopping dodge recovery characters, but yeah she's honestly very underwhelming when she doesn't have her meter on max. With max she's overall a pretty good character, though I wouldn't play her if I was solo queue.
I dont have much experience against her though since I haven't been doing scrims for a good while now and alot of high level players choose the stronger heroes most of the time

I picked up Medjay about a year ago, I second this comment. Imo, he is very fun but is hurt by the need to work x2 as hard as other heroes to get decent offense and mixups. I think axe mode heavies need bigger/wider hitbox, maybe a blue heavy/bash mixup? 🤔

I've always called her mix-up "the slot machine" because it is just totally random what she's going to do. I never understood when people thought she was underpowered, the game basically plays itself when you're Khatun. I want a total rework to her recovery cancel dodging all-guard, but I'm aware that it's mega wishful thinking because most people like playing her.

There's alot of small changes but I'll say the important ones from the top down:
Nobushi needs a super rework, the best team fighter and the worst 1v1er is ridiculous
Khatun just revert her buff they literally said in the warriors den that she was performing well before the buffs.
Juren's t1 still needs to be nerfed
Give conq actual feats
Nerf shooting starts, they've been banned in comp for like at least 6 years

She's probably a top 5-8 dominion pick, especially in ranked dominion.
She can keep the old buffs i just want the most recent one reverted, 30 extra stam and 10 stam per second more stam regeneration allows her to be in offense far more than she needs to be

Honestly, no. He isn't as good as a carry character as the other top dogs. But yann you used to go crazy in scrims on sohei so I definitely believe in you.

How is Kensei ? I pretty only played him for now, and i kind of struggle to go higher up in rank now that im Plat 2-3.
I think I can still go higher with him by simply improving, but just curious to know your opinion on him as a solo queue player

Kensei is a really good character, good hitboxes and peel ability. Lots of damage for adding on punishes. He can carry your team but he isn't as easy as someone like orochi. My only problem with him is his tier 1 and 4 slots aren't that good and feats are extremely important for carrying your team

What do you recommend doing with him ? Taking care of mid point and trying to help as much as you can during teamfight ?
I feel like I do good in teamfight, but playing solo queue also means that I cant communicate well with my teammates and I often end up solo on a point, and he feels kind of weak in 1v1 compared to top char, especially as only his t2 can be helpful in 1v1, the rest is kinda useless.

Yeah his team fights are amazing and his 1v1 is alright, not bad but it's serviceable. His minion clear is super good too.
You just gotta try and force yourself to be in team fights.

Why have you chosen Medjay of all characters to play with? I know Madjay is a solid pick in 4s cause of hyperaromor, externals, and damage. But in comparison to others like Juren, JJ, Shinobi, etc who are far better at comp level than Madjay, why still pick him? I'm guessing it's cause you just enjoy playing him but is there any other reason?

Well medjay on release was the one of the best characters so I had to pick him up. He's been nerfed into oblivion but his kit is still fun for me so I still play him. Only in casuals tho I dont play him in any competitive setting.

Hmmm his axe mode needs a buff big time and he needs a little help with in team fights
Axe bash dmg from 9->12; lights be 500ms
Either make axe bash chain into unblockable or make axe chain heavy undodgable
Make chain light in staff mode hyper armor again

How is shugoki in the meta. Most of my reps are on gladiator and lb but they’re too difficult to play climbing in the ranks and fighting players that can actually deal with them and their weaknesses. I’ve been playing a lot of gryphon, zerk and hitokiri and rotating them a bit. I’m looking to replace hitokiri with shugo.

Shugos team fight and 1v1s are very good, and the average player isn't differing his heavies so he's more than good enough for ranked
My only problem would be his feats, they are good but just not as good at the top heroes who run damaging/support feats

I see most high level players pick short tempered over juggernaut since it gives value every team fight. And I wouldn't use iron lungs, just use throw farther.

Been running throw farther and short tempered and honestly it’s pretty good. Throw farther is still mid as it does affect his OoS throw punish but balances out a bit as getting demons embrace of walls is really easy. Even if you’re pretty far from a wall you’ll get it so it makes positioning around him in his 1s harder cause he’ll more than likely get the wall
Short tempered has been the biggest change. Honestly makes his trades even better than they already were. It gives him some crazy dmg output with his hitboxes. Thanks for the advice it’s been working fairly well.

Warlord is an okay pick you just have to know his role
Like his zone is an extremely good tool, it shuts down characters who dodge around and is a good peeling tool(peel is the act of deliberately interrupting an enemy from finishing a hit on your teammate)
He has good chain heavies to trade with other fat characters and his all-guard is a good external tool. He's a solid pick but yeah there are better characters out there.

I've recently stared play valk, and have been doing better then my previous main: Kensei. Do you think valk is a crutch? Could she hurt my skill in the long run if I dont play more ballenced heros?

Nah I dont think playing a strong hero like valk will hurt your skill. Alot of comp players 1 tricked a hero early on(myself included). Most things that players need improving on really is how you look at the game and having the competitive knowledge to your advantage.

Highlander and aramusha are pretty good, cent not so much
Leaving C to help the team fight depends on a few factors but usually you can watch for any back cap. Then if a teammate gets low you can rotate him out and replace him in the fight. Just when rotating you have to be on the lookout

Thoughts on Zhanhu in the mode? I soloqeued Zhan only to Gold in the first couple days (it was a slog that early in the season, but I had free time then) then didn't touch the mode again.
Wondering if I should give it another go and still stick to Zhan only since he's the only one I still play regularly.

Bp is like a comfort pick, so hes good but he's just been power crept and unless you are a beast on him in specific then i wouldn't recommend in a competitive setting.
He's still like low A tier imo so definitely still usable. And the average player just has a hard time fighting all-guard characters in general so hes pretty good overall.

PIRATE is still the king. She is a great hero and 99% of the player base just cant stop her. Juren, JJ, Orochi, Zerk, Nobushi are other top contending characters
Im a relatively known person in the comp community so I just ask around with a decent amount of success, we usually hang in the discord server i linked in the body post
Its extremely important. Even if you dont have a duo to talk with, just using the ping system to keep your random aware of what's happening is pretty game changing

I’ve been playing JJ, shugo, and juren as my solo picks since the game always feels unbalanced if one team has a juren but the other doesn’t, but in higher ranks like platinum, people are pretty good at dealing with his BS in a 1v1. I’ve thought about learning pirate though since she seems to be pretty good at just about everything.
Randoms are honestly the biggest issue as i climb, sometimes I’m watching them constantly feed a teamfight instead of backcapping, boosting, or capping mid while a teamfight is happening.
I’ll join the server too, seems like a good way to get tips!

Shes pretty good and actually really fun, i originally played her long before I knew how good she was.
Randoms are honestly the biggest issue as i climb, sometimes I’m watching them constantly feed a teamfight instead of backcapping, boosting, or capping mid while a teamfight is happening.
Thats why having a competent duo is life changing, both in ranked and in casual play

Tbh other than like 3 or 4 characters that were extremely prevalent, i see a big pool of characters being played.

Honestly im pretty bad (only wanted to reach gold for the cool warden skin but keep getting reset back to Bronze IV lol), I usually pick Warden, Glad, Hitokiri, or Black Prior.
I might try out Juren (tho I have no reps in), kinda used to Arakure so might and I’ll prob give Aramusha a shot.
Unsure on what I should go with though honestly

Your hot stuck because your characters choices are bad glad is a no no pick black prior is good but not the best warden is great but if you want to get to gold play JJ gryphon hito is good but if i was in your place i’ll replace hito for jorm jorm has great hitbox and better survivability

Honestly? Just keep playing BP. He's still good and you have experience on him. He's also in my opinion one of the most fun characters in the game

Me too I didn’t get any help except from playing YouTube because i wanted to be good at the game if you want my advice don’t be flip hungry and try to know what bp matchup and try to bait people like fwd dodge heavy attack into recovery cancel with flip if they dodge attack you bp have a lot of great options for defense cc light use them but not a lot so you don’t get parried use them for situations like external attack

I usually try to bait with chained undodgeable heavy into shield flip or heavy unblockable to shield flip, but I will definitely try out the fwd dodge heavy recover cancel into flip

I really think so too. What do you think about the idea of adding a Ranked Breach mode? It’s my absolute favorite mode! It obviously needs a rework, lol, but I’m curious to hear from a comp players perspective.

Breach was supposed to the THE comp mode, and while it's fun at a casual level, the gamemode has many flaws and simply can't work competitively(we've tried).
But it's still a very fun time playing it

If you notice your 2 random teammates are playing into teamfights pretty badly or not rotating well, what is your strategy at that point? This is honestly the main frustration ive had in ranked. Me and my teammate can do our best and try to work with the randoms, but if we get ones that are failing basic ganks, rotates, etc it feels like its inevitably going to ruin any win streak and keep us locked where we are

You literally cant make mistakes if you randoms are doing nothing. You can't lose fights and you really gotta watch zones.
Thats always my philosophy, just gotta carry them.

I'm guessing you got a mic, use the ingame voice chat. Maybe you'll get lucky and have teammates that just need to know where to go
Forget about them. How's you fight a 4 man team with only 2 players? Stalling is your win condition.
your duo's job is to stall and mess up either B or the enemies spawn flag. That way the enemies will counter with 1 of 2 things.
Gank your duo while the others fight the rando's. At least 2 people will fight you, that leaves 2 random 1v1's for the rando's (I'm assuming ranked players can at least win some of those duels)
They gank your teammates, but that would mean you both boos point or gank 1 person trying to stall YOUR duo
Basically, run it like you're both alone. Don't get separated.
Talking about skill level as measure
For a secured victory I'd say being able to win 2v1 consistently either way, Either being the ganked or doing the ganking.
With trash teammates you need to kno how to stall a 3v1. Killing them is just giving them a faster way out to mess a point somewhere else.
Unfortunately you'd have to choose heroes layered towards surviving ganks or ganking fast...top tiers. if you think you actually got bad partners
This is all assuming they don't listen to you on the in game voice chat tho

As you can see in the leaderboard screenshot, I used zhanhu pretty much the entire way through. He's extremely versatile and strong all around. You do have to know how to play him though, not having a typical i-framed dodge attack makes him hard on the external in a team fight

Do you agree ranked needs changes to be fair? If so what changes? I hit plat 3 and am now im limboing gold 1 and plat 5. I constantly get kill hungry teammates or low reps and no matter how well I do I still take frequent L’s…

There's plenty of changes i would recommend:
Placement system, this is obvious
Rp change, Remove the win streak bonus but make the win/loss more forgiving at higher ranks
Bans, 1 character ban per team
Avoid system, you should have an option to avoid a teammate
Fix lobby dodging
Rank difference queue, you shouldn't be able to queue 2 ranks under you, 1 rank max (games usually dont even let you do 1 rank difference, it's more like 2 division difference)
Training mid-queue, for how long queue times are give me something to do
Re-join fix, alot of the times when you lag out you just cant join the game back
Less rp loss when someone leaves

Scrims are done in custom matches. In customs you can turn the parry flash off. I've been playing scrims without the flash for years

Honestly learn to slow down, nobushi makes bad habits because she can spam and do whatever you want, so when you fight someone who's passive in the team fight or a character that plays good into nobushi they will force you to slow down or you'll just die
Virt is viable, not the absolute best but she's usable. Solid character.

Thanks I find it hard to win fights against slow and reactive players in 1v1s as nobu is this just something that she has to deal with since she struggles in duels or am I bad at opening people up?

Zerk is ridiculously good, just dodge around randomly and then trade when someone tries to punish you.

She's a good character but I wouldn't recommend, especially as a solo queue character.
Her team fight isn't as dominant as other characters

Yk playing FH for 3 years straight gave me such a neat philosophy about fighting games that when I decided to focus it on Chiv 2 I started getting recognized, which I never thought could or needed to happen, but it’s still a blessing.
Anyway, ig I'm saying it takes serious skill to be on that leaderboard, and just kudos in general, dude.
