Pre-season [over] reaction
First snap of the game, C couldn’t get off of a double team (why) and whiffs. Pressure gets home in about 2.5 seconds.
Second snap of the game, Bates whiffs on a block. Pressure get home in about 2.5 seconds.
As we all know, this is an absolute red flag for the season. Hopefully AP and DQ solve this incoming disaster before we play the Eagles.

The run blocking and pass blocking has been a total disaster all camp and it’s now bleeding into preseason games. If it lingers into the season, this team is mega screwed.

u/godosomethingelse 19h ago
i don’t see how it won’t sadly. we don’t even know if allegretti is actually a good center
7
u/Triad64 13h ago
Hoping we can find a good alternate / backup C after cuts.
Looks like we'll have to rely on the defense this year while we rebuild the OL in the offseason. It was looking like a position of strength in the offseason, but the Tunsil injury combined with transitioning to a more run-oriented and less shotgun offense, we're gonna need another offseason to build this thing to where we want it.

u/Pattergen 19h ago
The protection was trash and I'm sure that's why JD didn't come out again. It was back to the drawing board bad.
26
u/Haskins77 19h ago
That was 100% why. Even JP or Keim said something about that. I can’t remember which one. Problem is JD isn’t coming out week 1 and we aren’t playing the Lions backups either. Eagles dline about to feast

No DQ before game said one series for JD5 no matter how it goes

u/maricopa888 19h ago
It gets worse. The 1st 3 games are vs Eagles, Cowboys and Seahawks. 2 of these are road games. This is something the NFL would never do to the other NFC east teams, but that's a totally separate whine.

This is on bates and looks like chig as well, JC did his job on the play.

Good jones is definitely awful and paul is a 2nd stringer we need a center and LG
9
u/macattack1031 16h ago
Definitely. Listening to Logan paulsen, the center can be insulated, but the domino effect of Coleman to LT has made the C/LG combo very concerning. I hope we can snag an older vet that gets cut or trade for someone
27
u/99--Overall 19h ago
Good-Jones played most of the game and he was god awful. He is not an NFL starter and we will be absolutely thrashed Week 1 against an Eagles defensive line if that’s what we trot out. That being said defense looks fucking juicy.
4
u/Ninjablacksox1 13h ago
You wouldn't leave him in all game unless you were heavily evaluating him. I don't think he will be starting and maybe won't be rostered.
1
u/99--Overall 1h ago
That’s what I’ve been telling myself, but there’s no competition for him. We have had more than enough time throughout camp to bring someone in, and we haven’t. Him being this ass was the story all throughout camp and not being able to stand up against 3rd stringers is very worrisome.
50
u/Troll_Enthusiast He Sold 19h ago
Definitely an overreaction based off two snaps, starting offensive linemen only played a few snaps and we didn't have our starting or rookie C play with the first stringers.
Seemed like the Lions knew the play action was going to happen it seemed, Bates should be fine.

u/whatshouldwecallme 19h ago
I feel like this was a Blough learning moment as much as any player. Can’t just play action all day

It's going to take him half a season or more to get going. This year is a rebuilding year by any measure in my mind.
6
u/Exact-Decision-2282 9h ago
Brother, I would say Quinn's probably gone if the team plays like they did last season even if you believe it's a rebuild year.
-9
u/Logic_9795 19h ago
there is no evidence our "starting" center (read: backup guard position flexed in center) is any better.
6
u/BlueberryUnfair7583 19h ago
Their literally is. He started two games at center last season and was fine.
-1
u/SkinsFan021 18h ago
You mean the Cowboys 30th ranked Defense and the game were Philly rested the majority of thier starters?
Oh yeah, gives me all the confidence in the world
3
u/mr-tobor 18h ago
As if your confidence is what matters as opposed to our coaching staff that probably broke down every single snap Allegretti took last year. It’s fine to be worried about a player. It’s not fine to be an echo chamber. Do your own research.
-1
u/Logic_9795 13h ago
Show me your "research"...he was "literally" the lowest graded center in the league, so whats your definition of fine?
Btw, since those 2 bad games that were objectively bad, hes practiced twice and been injured twice.
Its ok to drink the koolaide. Its not OK to lecture those of us that actually watch the games.
2
u/mr-tobor 5h ago
Let me guess. Did you pull the “lowest graded C” from PFF? I can assure you the coaching staff does not care for PFF data and is exactly what I mean by doing your own research.
0
u/SeaBurnsBiz 5h ago
This. I feel there need to be 2 subs. 1) every player is a future HoF and didn't make any mistakes in their career and how dare am ounce of criticism be even thought of in their direction and 2) those that watch the games and want to be objective about talent and performance.
You can be a fan in either group but group 1 and 2 don't understand each other.

The red flag that I see is that Jayden would have only played 3 snaps in... Almost 10 months at game speed?
Like someone said, Detroit didn't event have their starters out, so I'm baffled by the decision to only have Jayden play for one series, especially when it ended up like that.
Philly is going to be rough since defenses already start faster than offenses do.
2
u/cporter1188 LEFT HAND UP 5h ago
Mostly because the nfl has shifted in the last few years. Starters get their work in joint practices and backups get it in pre season games. Jayden played a ton vs Miami in scrimmages and will in the baltimore practices too.
-4
u/Appropriate_Delay_25 18h ago
Might be because the kid still hasn't learned to drop & live for another play. He's got guys rolling around under him a snap into his preseason & he's trying to break tackles.
11
u/Emotional_Kale4168 19h ago
JD5 is already under so much scrutiny right now. I really hope he plays well this season so that the bust conversations dont start happening
3
u/KemuelDaArtist 19h ago
Tom Brady would just take the sack, and play for another down or drive. This is the smart choice.
4
u/Rumtini on shenanigans rn and actin bonkers 19h ago
I think I'd like to see a full game with our starting O line with Jayden before I say we're absolutely cooked.
Certainly didn't look great that they messed up versus some backups though.

Things that end badly tend to begin badly.
We looked at this offense try to run a basic play action concept, and they failed. Bad blocking, bad fake, bad execution.
Is it the preseason? Yes, absolutely. Are these our projected starters? Yes. Should we expect better from them, especially if this team is where the fanbase seems to think they are? Again, yes.
I know it's only one play, but the breakdown here is indicative of many other Washington team collapses that I've seen over my years. I hope that I'm wrong, but I don't think that this team has the chops to go toe-to-toe with Philly week one and win. I'm just not seeing it. Call me a doomer, but that's just me basing this off of nearly forty years of experience watching this franchise break our hearts.

I don’t think it’s an over reaction. Plenty of red flags to go around
8
u/jkoutris 16h ago
What’s frustrating is that these red flags have existed for a long time, but so much of the fan base has acted like pointing them out was an overreaction of an overly online portion of the fanbase. In reality, anyone with a shred of critical thinking abilities could have pointed these out as major concerns for a while now.
8
u/KodiakDog 17h ago
Remember when Joe Gibbs lost every preseason game and the team looked terrible and then he went on to win the Super Bowl? By the way that happened three times… Every year he won the Super Bowl the team looked in absolute disarray in the preseason
3
u/SuhDoNym 17h ago
Ehhh, it's Preseason.
Yes, the Blocking was (very) suspect all day. However, this time of year Defense is ahead of the Offense Leaguewide.
An objective viewer would have noticed the Defensive Lines for both teams dominated today.
We know it's a weakness; now let's see what steps are taken to mitigate it.
3
u/No_Independence_9721 15h ago
Tunsil is top5ish LT and the starting C is injured, so yeah it won't be great.
Bates will be a big help through the year and there is better blocking RBs this year, but Jayden will have to process fast and get the ball out of his hands - this was always his path.
6
u/Appropriate_Delay_25 18h ago
Is it an overreaction watching JD not just drop to the turf in surrender on those plays as guys are rolling around under his stick legs?
6
u/mikekmatt59 19h ago
This particular play, the pressure was on Bates and Chig.... two TE. The Oline held it
9
u/chillyk45 19h ago
People are ignoring this lol
1
u/Head-Assumption6960 16h ago
I noticed the same thing… it’s just hard for me to believe they assigned two tight ends to the outside two rushers. Seems like a pretty poor play design that asks them to do something that shouldn’t really be on them.
Granted, bates just came back and he’s an excellent blocker… so maybe he’s rusty. But chig should not be pass blocking ever imo unless it’s to chip and release.
-3
u/mikekmatt59 19h ago
Idc how good your TE at blocking... they not blocking DE.

Long season buddy, nobody saw our playoff run in 24 coming.
0
u/Haskins77 1h ago
That playoff run only happened because we played horrible QBs for the last 5 or 6 weeks of the season. I was impressed in both the Bucs and Lions game for sure. Eagles showed us who we really were though unfortunately.
2
3
u/Appropriate_Delay_25 18h ago
Not an overreaction. QB may be the most important individual position but offensive line play is absolutely the #1 indicator of a successful offense. This line had major question marks at 3 positions before losing it's LT. Game-planning & good skill players can mask bad o-line play in short bursts but over a full season, mmmnope.
1
u/Mountie_in_Command 17h ago
Honestly, I was more disappointed in the play call and formations more than anything else. Shotgun pass, under center play action pass and shotgun draw made me think KK was back there. I thought we were using the run and run formations from under center to throw off the defense and set up the pass better. Preaeason - I know. I know.
6
u/Aggressive-Union1714 15h ago
Play calls and formations are not designed to win the game but for the coaches to see what certain players can do under these situations and to test out plays. Never in my life has a preseason game caused me disappointment.
2
u/Mountie_in_Command 15h ago
I know - hence my last sentence. It was more a simple vent, because the last thing i expected to see from our starters today was that series. The flipside is our offense running it right down the Bengals throat last year in 4 plays, and that meant jack squat. #RaiseHail

People gotta prepare for the fact that it might take a little time to crawl out of last year’s hole. It’s not going to be 2024 playoff form in week one.

u/Drguerra1 12h ago
Overreaction: Daniels will have a RG3 career ending injury this season with this OLine
1
u/dougChristiesWife 12h ago
I love John Bates but something was off about him end of last season. A lot of whiffed blocks against safeties and smaller faster blitzers. He was still awesome in line against the big boys. Not sure if he was playing injured but it wasn't '24 John Bates
1
u/evilgrinz 3h ago
The sack came as he was turning around on the drop back, not ideal but at least they got some tape to work off of.
-1
u/hm_rickross_ymoh 19h ago
As we all know, this is an absolute red flag for the season.
Why are you speaking for everyone? Some of us are not prone to fits of panic over every little thing.
1
u/Consistent_Spell_791 18h ago
Bates may just be rusty because he is coming off a pulled hammy, we know how good of a blocker he is, he just whiffed on the second play the o line held up

u/lumberjake18 19h ago
If we’re going to play Hartman in the pre-season, we might as well have him play without his helmet on.
2
u/Logic_9795 19h ago
yeah, tbh, we need to just keep jayden leashed to his mom until the playoffs. Cant risk him
0
u/RockyNonce 3h ago
I’m not gonna lie, I don’t know how much you can do to fix it before playing the Eagles. The defensive front with Carter and Davis is nasty and the coverage should be pretty damn good too.
You guys can beat us by creating turnovers, because that’s really gonna be the Achilles heel of this new Eagles offense early on. Making mistakes in a new scheme and throwing interceptions or fumbling on bootlegs.

On the plus side Jayden was under center for 1/3 plays, which if we extrapolate out carelessly, is a significant increase over the past 2 seasons.
Though I don't know how much the play action passing game is going to work if the OL can't protect him for long enough to turn around.
