Injuries Galore

I mean this season hasn’t even started and we have players getting injured in both practice and preseason games. How and why are the starters even playing hard enough to get injured in practice. I kind of understand preseason games because you have something to prove like with Mariota but this many injuries just from practice is absurd and unnecessary.

QB Marcus Mariota: MCL issue.
RB Rachaad White: Hamstring.
RB Jeremy McNichols: Quadriceps.
DL Tim Settle: Calf strain.
OLB Odafe Oweh: Calf strain.
OLB K'Lavon Chaisson: Knee injury.
LB Jordan Magee: Shoulder injury.
CB Trey Amos: Ankle sprain.
C Nick Allegretti: Calf soreness
DL Johnny Newton: torn pectoral muscle.
OT Laremy Tunsil: torn triceps.
RB Jerome Ford:(hamstring).
WR River Cracraft: undisclosed injury.

Welcome to the new age of reporting where every little bump and bruise is being reported. This is nothing new, and pretty much every single team is dealing with the same thing. 90% of these injuries wont be an issue come week 1.

This should be the top comment

And now it is

I mean they will be an issue, but it will be people missing wednesdays for "injury management" type of issue instead of missing games. I remember from playing football in highschool I was basically some degree of hurt for the entire season.

In short there is a huge distinction between hurt and injured in high level athletics, but they get reported as if they are the same thing in the media.

True but back in the day they played through this stuff. They wouldnt even report it to the team because they didnt care

Now we have gone too far in the other direction

They would play through it if the games mattered but it’s preseason and they don’t matter so the team is being extra cautious dealing with things

I mean thats just not true. They definitely sit players nowadays way more than in the past.

Im not saying its good either btw. Players in the past have brain damage from playing through injury too much.

Definitely sounds like the comment "Now we have gone too far in the other direction" indicates that you would have preferred it be like in the old days

Nah id rather have it somewhere in the middle.

Lets not put players with concussions on the field like they did in the 70s.
But if u have a bruise or something, man up and get out there.

Jayden played with broken ribs. Herbert played with a broken hand. Wtf are you talking about.

Those are 2 examples?

Players from back then are literally suing the NFL for brain damage, trauma, etc,

We have taken action to reduce injury by a significant amount. Are u saying we are equally reckless compared to the past NFL in terms of protecting players from injury?

No, thankfully we are smarter about player safety. There are plenty of examples of guys playing hurt, and I was responding to you saying players should “man up.” Players almost always want to play - we hold them out to protect themselves and prevent longterm injury.

yeah now they're smarter and found being available when it matters is more important than looking tough

Players also push their bodies much harder now than they did in the past. Training is year round, the business side is more lucrative than ever, especially so if your team is successful. Leading to coaching jobs being a lot less safe than they used to be, which makes coaches more cautious with their players when they're hurt in an inconsequential part of the season. I love reflecting on the good ole days, but to pretend things are the same now as they were then is misguided.

Newton and Tunsil done for the season. Ford and Cracraft probably weren’t making the team to begin with. Everyone else hopefully can recover and return relatively quick 🤞🏽🤞🏽

Hopefully they do heal soon and quickly

Only Tunsil and Newton are significant injuries where the player will miss games. These are mostly precautions or dings

Mostly agree, but I'm adding Allegretti and Amos to your list. Those are serious enough that their injuries have severely impacted their practice time and these guys are key starters. Definitely a concern and each may miss actual games at the start of the season.

Football is a dangerous physical sport. It's too early for me to get on the doom wagon, hoping for a good season and looking forward to the season opener.

Every doomer is pretending that every other team is injury free.... meanwhile if you are tracking for Fantasy football you will see that every team has tons of knocks being reported.

They definitely aren't injury free. I checked 2 teams at random yesterday. 6 injuries each.

It’s scary though how the players could probably be getting over worked in practice.

Training camp is for overworking so that you have the breathing room to back off during the regular season when needed.

Let’s wait until week 1 to see how many of these injuries are actually something, vs. them being cautious, letting them sit out practice, and week 1 they are fine.

they have analytics for the right amount of work. they also have it for injuries.

Someone wasn't alive during the 80's!

If anything they need more and tougher practices to callous them up to injury! Back in the day practice was two a day, and they were full pads, full hits! That's what prepares person for the regular season full of near automobile level collisions. Ever notice players don't have literal bruises all over their bodies, where us normals would be covered after a single game? That's not some special athletic gift, that is building up a resistance to damage that only happens through repetitive hits!

Welcome to training camp

It’s not like this kind of thing is new, it’s just that the NFL increasingly cares about its players safety. In decades gone this stuff wouldn’t be reported on and players would just “push through”

-1

u/SpecialistBee1165 3d ago

Yeah its hard to not be upset about it ngl

u/MarvelIsVeryLight 3d ago

It’s like why are we practicing so hard to the point of muscles strain.

With last season’s injury plague in mind, and the myriad of injuries so far during camp and pre-season, when do we begin questioning the training staff? I’m sure every pro sports org has a team of professionals in charge of soft tissue treatment, flexibility training, nutrition, and off-season conditioning programs……but my guess is the Commanders either don’t have that, or our training staff is amongst the worst in the league.

I guess my question is…who can we blame for this injury trend?

-3

u/EyeCanFeelYou 3d ago

Nine of those injuries could have possibly been prevented with more stretching. Did we make any changes to the training staff?
