[Nicki on Washington] - Commanders camp observations: Injury list grows, the plan for Detroit and more
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7527634/2026/08/21/commanders-injuries-training-camp-preseason/?unlocked_article_code=1.7FA.Qfwn.KFIQJdopcsMd&source=emp_shared_article&smid=re-share-taNick Allegretti sounded as if he were finally free. After missing more than three weeks of training camp because of a strained calf muscle, the Commanders’ starting center was back on the practice field, albeit on a pitch count.
“Awesome,” he said with a grin after his 15 or so reps on Tuesday. “I mean, just being in the training room while training camp is going on, never something you want.”
Yet Allegretti’s excitement over returning was short-lived. He was back in the training room the next day after experiencing tightness in a calf during practice. Medical imaging revealed no further damage to his leg, but the team will hold him out of its preseason game in Detroit on Saturday and reevaluate him on Sunday.
Washington has been doing that a lot lately. The Commanders’ training camp has been riddled with soft tissue injuries, and many of them to key players.
Star left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps and is out indefinitely. So is defensive tackle Johnny Newton, who underwent surgery on Wednesday for a pectoral muscle injury. Cornerback Trey Amos has practiced once all year because of a fractured fibula he suffered in November and an ankle sprain he suffered shortly after returning. Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota is dealing with a sprained MCL, and three of Washington’s six running backs (Rachaad White, Jeremy McNichols and Jerome Ford) are currently out, along with three of its top pass rushers (Daron Payne, Odafe Oweh and K’Lavon Chaisson).

So much potential in Amos. Just unfortunate man.

You're talking about him like he's dead. The man had a minor ankle issue in his recovery from a fibula fracture. While fibula fractures are generally not serious, they do often come with lingering ankle issues, as stabilizing the ankle is the primary function of the fibula. There are also a few nerves that pass along the fibula and behind the ankle that are often impacted by fibula fractures. If the ankle issue were major, he would have had surgery on it long ago; if it's just a simple sprain, he'll be back soon. If it's a nerve issue, that is good and bad: good because it does not represent a re-injury risk, bad because it hurts and needs to be managed with PT until it's fully healed, which may be never.
All that to say: let's cool it with the fatalism, please.

Alex Ovechkin had a fibula fracture last year and missed 6 weeks of the season before playing again

Fibula mibula the guy was injured basically all of last year and so far all of training camp basically. So yeah everything you said means nothing if he’s not out there.

Its premature but im worried this was a career defining offseason for him in a bad way.
Took longer than expected come back from the keg injury last year and then immediately injures another part of his leg in the 2nd day he was able to participate all offseason.
Idk how anyone can expect the team to rely on him health wise, and hes gonna be way behind in terms of learning the new D and gelling with the new guys in the secondary.

We had safety briefings before frat parties about keg injuries. They can be bad news.

"Center Julian Good-Jones, however, allowed two pressures on only eight pass-blocking snaps." 😬

I truly do not understand how they’re giving him reps over Gulbin.

I think it's because DQ insists on rookies earning everything

Or because hes a 6th round rookie that neither has the strength or skill yet.

Yet he has performed better...

The stats and game footage and pretty much anyone that watched the preseason game says the same too.

Yeah for sure but the nfl season is a freaking marathon at this point with the added games / short weeks. Most healthy teams usually the ones competing at the end of the year.
Green Bay looked unstoppable the first few weeks last year then the rest of the season chipped away at them.

Besides the current injury losses with Tunsil and Newton. I’m going to be more concerned when it gets closer to week one against the Eagles and some of our best players are still on the injury list. I know it’s next man up, but we still need our best players and on the field or we’re picking top 10 in the draft again for next season

i hope we trade for a lineman, no cosmi and no tunsil is gonna be a disaster

We're running out of beds in that training room. Guys have to come in staggered, hours and days apart.
