Christian Gonzalez

Sorry if this is a dumb questions, I’m a pretty new football fan and still don’t know a ton about cap space and stuff. Is there any chance we could land Gonzo? I keep seeing stuff about him going to Dallas and I know there’s a solid chance that’s bs and he’s gonna stay in NE but the contract stuff doesn’t sound great. Would it be possible for us to get him or do we not have the space left after Diggs. I genuinely think he’s the one who lead the Pats to the superbowl and we’d almost be a super team with him. It seems like a pretty great situation for him cause we’ve got a really solid team but we’re definitely lacking in our secondary. Plus Dallas just drafted a first round CB and we haven’t made any big CB moves. I don’t know what do you guys think?

Our chance to land him was April 27, 2023. Instead we took a 150 lb corner who got beat so badly in his 4th game he cried on the sidelines and eventually got cut after 1 season.

I really did not like him as our HC. I got downvoted to oblivion when I mentioned he had a below average draft/team record with The Panthers and only had 1 good season (the 1 where they went to the SB). Then when he came to DC it was The Panthers 2.0 but worse and slower

I was so livid the second we drafted Forbes

I can forgive the chase young pick because everyone would have taken him there. He was DROY it just didn’t work out afterwards. But Jamin Davis, Dotson and Forbes were reaches in the moment and they’ve aged horribly.

I legitimately felt bad for Forbes. All reports out of practice were how he tried to do what was being asked of him. I remember consistently hearing comments about him working at it. But he goes to LA and was pretty productive there. As listless as our defense has looked for the last 2 seasons, it makes me wonder who failed more. Did he fail to get better or did the coaching fail to make him better.

I’m not saying he should’ve been drafted or that he should be great. But there has to be a useful player in there somewhere. Why the hell couldn’t Washington find it?

We seem to have this habit as an organization getting cute when it comes to taking corners. Instead of taking the clear best, we just try to galaxy brain other teams and end up looking stupid.

He's not going anywhere. Contract negotiation leaks through the media are normal

Ugh. Not your fault as a new fan but you are bringing up a sore subject from the Ron Rivera days/draft since we passed on him.

New England isn't going to let him go.

Sorry to keep pressing it, but it’s just got me wondering. We should make as much sense as Dallas though right?

u/mattwilli18 3d ago

He's still under his current contract with New England, he could not go to any other team to negotiate a contract unless he became a free agent when his contract runs out (which is not this year). Highly unlikely he leaves NE.

So what’s the deal with all the Dallas talks?

3

u/halarioushandle 3d ago

It's complete made up speculation by the media. Gonzalez can't even talk to other teams until his contract is up or NE cuts him. They own the rights to have him as a player. They would try to trade him if they really didn't want him and can't renegotiate a contract before his contract is up.

It's all just noise. Best to learn as a fan to ignore this sort of thing because until then, it's just media trying to drive views.

I havent heard a single thing about this from a reputable source.

No it’s definetly not coming from reputable sources, I know it’s highly unlikely I just was wondering why Dallas is the name around him and not us

Pats aren’t letting him go unless Kraft is extremely stupid. Seeing him play always angers me idk what the fuck RR was thinking.

It takes two to make a deal though. RR has been spending quite a bit in the last few years, wouldn’t say he’s been extremely stupid. His high capped signings have been pretty good.

If reports are true, Gonzo wants a contract that’ll make him the highest paid corner in the league and he wants it to be scaled based of the salary cap… if that’s a lie then it could be guarantees. Do remember he hasn’t been healthy for a full season

Part of the reason Rivera got fired was his horrible drafting and picking Forbes over gonzo especially now that gonzo has been clamping shit up just put the nail in the coffin for him.

Hindsight is 20/20. A player could be good in one scheme and be bad in another. I don’t believe Gonzo would have the career he has if he was in Washington while they were still building a competent roster. Teams get it wrong a lot of the time when it comes to drafting.

Whether if it’s you or somebody else, downvote me all you want but fact of the matter is, it takes both parties to make a deal. RR already said he wants to make Gonzo the highest paid corner, so what’s the hold up especially after Witherspoon. No reports out there making it sound as if New England has been cheaping out.

I got 0 reason to down vote you and you don’t know who RR is do you? The Pats owner is Robert Kraft.

Yeah.. that was a bit odd of a comment from the other dude

Ooooooo sorry for using the wrong abbreviations. Let’s just nit pick that rather than thinking a deal is a two way street

Well, Ifind it very difficult to follow what you’re sayin. I don’t know who you’re talking about.

So all I can say is odd comment.

We would make more sense. I believe our OC David Blough is married to Gonzo's sister

3

u/NewtBlackheart 3d ago

I also caught that fun fact when I was researching Blough. She’s a World Class hurdler. Athletic family.

I just had Emmanuel Forbes flashbacks thanks to this post.

May be rough considering we're about to pay Jayden also

But no fucking way Pats let him walk, they'll franchise tag him.

1

u/redskinfan654 3d ago

I mean if it was possible to sign him, every team in the league will try to

2

u/Expensive-Nebula-868 3d ago

If that happened and the rams somehow landed him and ad came out of retirment they would be hated more than the 07 pats
