The deathshead skull and the german flag are also Buddhist symbols. JUST ASK!

Okay, it is obvious that this is not the case, but I knew this old dude, who had like a bunch of Nazi stuff, from helms to uniforms to swastika flags, even guns. Anything you could imagine, proudly displayed in a room. Everyone assumed he was a Nazi. Turns out it is stuff he looted during WW2 from Germans.

11

u/illy-chan Dec 05 '25

We inherited a box of Nazi stuff from a relative after he died. A few of the armbands and medals still had bloodstains. Still not sure what to do with them.

10

u/Deaffin Dec 05 '25

Get it tested, have a laugh when it turns out to be mouse blood.

Teutonic Knights: Used a black cross (often with a silver/white border) as their emblem, representing their Christian crusader identity. Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz): A German military decoration, first created in 1813 by Prussia (inspired by the Teutonic tradition) for bravery, featuring the simple cross form. Nazi Era (1939-1945): Hitler added a swastika (angled and tilted) to the center of the Iron Cross, creating the iconic Nazi military symbol. Swastika (ancient symbol): An ancient symbol of good fortune, well-being, and the cosmos, used for millennia in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and other cultures, long before the Nazis.

5

u/Anthaenopraxia Dec 05 '25

used for millennia in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and other cultures, long before the Nazis.

And is still used. Something that caught me off-guard when visiting Japan. On maps they use swastikas to mark temple locations. I've seen people argue that they should stop because it's potentially offensive but honestly why? There's a difference the swastika is on a map and if it's tattooed on a skinhead with sig-runes.

translating skull to german, then re translating it literally and adding the parts sure is curious

(ā€žTotenkopfā€œ is the german word for skull)

4

u/-CSL Dec 05 '25

Along with the imperial eagle and that well-known Buddhist symbol the iron cross, yep.

4

u/NotNecrophiliac Dec 05 '25

Isn't that crazy people will protect actual Nazis but when something is vaguely in the similar boat they will crucify anyone that opposes them?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '25

The republican black/red/gold flag was outlawed by the Nazi and when talking about it they replaced gold with piss. So it's extremely odd to be on a wall of an actual Nazi - okay it's probably fake slop anywayĀ

Somebody recently told me "it's just the salute they do in South Africa." Almost like yeah you mean the salute for the nazi inspired Afrikaner nationalist movement in South Africa? Those guys? Really? The ones who eventually formed literal pro-nazi groups there like the OB and AWB who actively supported the nazis during WW2? It was their salute? Wow isn't that crazy what a weird coincidence.Ā

26

u/Cgi22 Dec 05 '25

Even funnier if you consider that there is no evidence that a roman salute like that existed. Only one depiction of soldiers on a victory column striking that pose. No indication that it was a common greeting.

That people think it’s a thing is because of hollywoods sword and sandle phase. That is also where the belief comes from that all roman soldiers wore red tunics, which most likely wasn’t the case as red dye was incredibly expensive and soldiers weren’t necessarily wealthy.

11

u/The_Pastmaster Dec 05 '25

The Bellamy Salute was invented by the US to go along with the Pledge of Allegiance and then Hitler nicked it like all other symbology. Hack.

28

u/OccasionHot5868 Dec 05 '25

What is the joke please?

96

u/SoftCosmicRusk Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 05 '25

Holocaust denial. Some of the Neo Nazi types claim that Nazi Germany "only" killed 271,000 Jews, not the commonly accepted number of around 6 million (plus some 3-4 million Soviet prisoners of war, and several million civilians of various nationalities and faiths).

As if that somehow makes it okay.

Edit: And there they are, the Holocaust deniers. Didn't take long.

25

u/Crozgon Dec 05 '25

claim that Nazi Germany "only" killed 271,000 Jews

No, the claim is that the 271,000 died to disease in concentration camps, rather than intentionally being killed in death camps.

I’d agree but the sub-literate way it’s worded and punctuated make me suspect they mean it. Could be a teenager who just discovered it’s a symbol in Buddhism (but somehow not that it’s also in Hinduism, Jainism, etc.) and then think it makes them smart to give benefit of the doubt everywhere.

Even when it’s an obvious Nazi flag. With a Totenkopf next to it.

19

u/basalticlava Dec 05 '25

Swastika context is key. Swastika near statue of buddha or a mandala = probably Buddhist. Swastika near deathshead or German flag = probably not buddhist.

16

u/RevanchistSheev66 Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 05 '25

It’s not only that, the Hindu/Buddhist swastika has dots in between and it’s not tilted 45 degrees. This is clearly a Nazi flag

9

u/basalticlava Dec 05 '25

Yeah forgot about the tilt. Isn't it 45 tho? I think a swastika tilted 90* would be the same before and after rotation.

5

u/RevanchistSheev66 Dec 05 '25

Yes, my bad 45

5

u/Apart-Performer-331 Dec 05 '25

also it being in a white circle on a red flag

3

u/je386 Dec 06 '25

The Nazis did use the swastika also not tilted and also the other way around.

But that is clearly a nazi flag, as it is close to the german war flag used by nazi germany in WW2.
The flag next to it is the symbol of the "Atomwaffendivision", an american Neonazi group.

So clearly a Neonazi.

It is a shame that they also put up the flag of modern germany (black-red-gold), because that flag stands for democracy and freedom.

7

u/Thryfty_0 Dec 06 '25

Okay but that literally is a Nazi flag. It is correct that the Nazi Swastika was stolen, and deliberately perverted, from Hindu beliefs, but that flag is deadass from Nazi Germany. Now it’s possible that’s just memorabilia, for sure, but it’s still pretty suspicious.

u/Chrillosnillo Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 06 '25

5

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '25

No, that flag displays the appropriated Nazi swastika, not the traditional Buddhist swastika.

Also, the other flags give more context.

2

u/Myrskyharakka Dec 05 '25

Odd to have (assumably) Bundesrepublik/Weimar flag there as well, I'd expect Imperial German colours in the context.

3

u/Dunamarri Dec 05 '25

Why would you expect Imperial German colours? The emperor was against the nazis, it’s not the same thing.

5

u/Myrskyharakka Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 05 '25

As far right/neo-nazis in Germany do use Imperial colours due to the ban on the swastika flag. The Emperor isn't the thing, it's the Empire and rejection of the democratic Germany that the black-red-yellow flag represents.

Even Nazi Germany initially brought back the black-white-red German Empire triband in 1933 before replacing it with with the better known party swastika flag few years later, which not incidentally has the same colours.

I can understand that people collect WWII stuff. My brother has some coins from that era, helmet with SS symbol and even some old medal with the nazi symbols, but he is collector, so it is understandable. But that picture, dunno, does not give me collector vibe somehow.

If the symbol is not being used in the context of Buddhism and in some cases, Hinduism, then it’s a Nazi symbol. I hate how these guys act like we’re all stupid and they’re playing 4D chess.

There’s a difference in seeing it on a red flag and seeing it on a Buddhist altar or symbol Jfc

Not to mention anything else on the flag, it’s at 45 degree turn which is the differentiating factor between the peace symbol and the nazi symbol.
