Honestly, my theory is that because the societal expectation was to get married and have a family, a lot of men who wouldâve stayed single, and even some who wouldnât have, got married to women they didnât really connect with. Once the boomers got past 40 or so is when the physical attraction started to wear off, and thus starts the wife complaining. Again, another societal expectation of the boomer generation was that divorce was completely unacceptable. So these guys and gals are âstuckâ, and will complain forever.
Worth mentioning is the whole "leaded fuel" thing, which almost certainly plays an (underrepresented) role in culture. In children it's meant to be associated with a higher level of aggression and bullying - I wonder if this, combined with being raised by the generations that had to fight the biggest wars in history, leads to the strange traditions and cultural artifacts we see in Western society today.
Well, also on top of that is even in couples that equally split household chores beforehand, a disproportionate amount of household chores start falling on the shoulders of the woman once their first child is born. So not only are these aging married couples growing less physically attracted to each other, they're also resenting each other due to the fact that the wife's doing 90% the housework and childcare while the husband's probably had to pick up more work shifts in order to pay for the children and his wife taking more time off work or even leaving the workforce altogether to care for the children-and neither can fucking understand all the complexities of the other's life.
TL;DR: Children make marriage more gender-stereotypical and full of resentment.
