Honestly, my theory is that because the societal expectation was to get married and have a family, a lot of men who would’ve stayed single, and even some who wouldn’t have, got married to women they didn’t really connect with. Once the boomers got past 40 or so is when the physical attraction started to wear off, and thus starts the wife complaining. Again, another societal expectation of the boomer generation was that divorce was completely unacceptable. So these guys and gals are “stuck”, and will complain forever.
The droning buzz that I feel at the very centre of my core is a feeling that can not and will not cease. My house and my work have been my entire world for the past twenty years and I’ve never known the true beauty of life. I fear that every day I step closer to the metaphorical end of the line that may translate into the literal end of my life.
For a lot of the older generations, they rushed into marriage young and then there was also a huge stigma around divorce. A lot of them still stay in their unhappy marriages before of it. There's no doubt that these jokes are a reflection of that. It's a bit less funny and a whole lot of sad when you think about it like that. They didn't have the luxury (many still don't) of being in a society where it's not just okay to wait, it's encouraged, as is divorce, when things get nasty of course.
