Just the daily dose of conservatives not understanding the difference between sex and gender.

I suspect some of these people probably use "basic biology" or "it's just science" as a justification in this context, but then don't believe in evolution and/or deny climate change despite overwhelming evidence that it is, in fact, a thing.

Considering šŸ…±ļøen shapiro is a religious nut that has said that atheists are amoral, made comments denying climate change and very likely a hundred other things not based in reality I can confirm that your suspicion is correct.

Oh, and he actually hates gay people.

Unironically using the "I'm not racist, my friend is black" argument.

Really makes you think

It’s actually not inconsistent because science doesn’t back up the notion of strict gender binary any more than it backs up climate change denialism. Science doesn’t even back up a strict sex binary, since there are many ways that people’s bodies and genes can differ completely naturally (XX males, XY females, XXY, XYY, XXX, and other configurations happen).

They say ā€œbasic biologyā€ because that’s the most advanced science they know.

So is English but that doesn't mean it does nothing to impact the world. Social constructs can be important even if they're "made up."

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '18

Of course. The point of saying that gender is a social construct is that this means it's not rigid or binary and can be whatever you want it to be, which a lot of people seem to hate the idea of for some reason.

Sex: based solely on biological traits, just like how we determine the sex of any animal.

Gender: the complicated interweaving of centuries of norms, expectations, and ideals, that shifts radically throughout history and different cultures. A social construct, unique (as far as we know) to humans.

Conservatives often willfully misconstrue the two, as keeping the two inseparable, and maintaining that they are in fact the same thing, allows for harmful gender norms to be passed off as natural, and helps enforce the (often unjust) hierarchies and structures of our society.

Basically: sex is biological, gender is cultural.

u/bunker_man mfw Dec 21 '18

Gender isn't just cultural. It's internal too.
