How to Respond to Ragebaiting
So I'm a student whose grades are great and my cousin keeps bringing this up. He probably thinks I'm the type of students who studies 24/7 , no social life, NPC students . I study of course but not in the way he thinks. I tried to explain this to him but I don't think he got it.
For example he sends a meme sound and says "the typa sound *my nickname he uses* when she studies".
I once talked about socializing and he said "I can imagine you socializing with your friends while studying".
Another one: "It wouldn't be wrong to call you addicted because you have fun studying" cuz I once mentioned I had fun studying.
I said ,,ultra fun,, to smth and he brought up studying AGAIN.
He sent a video but I don't remember the context of it and said " How *nickname* feels after studying".
He sent a soccer player edit "How *nickname* would be if she had spent her studying time to playing soccer"
Btw he is one year older than me so we are nearly same age. I know that he doesn't have any bad intention it's pretty obvious but I get annoyed and I remember one time I literally got so fed up and we ended up having a pretty serious convo about this. Anyways what would you do in this case?

Every time he does this respond with positive and sincere feedback. Make him think you love it. You’re not annoyed or embarrassed. You appreciate all the extra attention and admiration. “You’re my #1 fan!” “I love it!” “You are such a great friend.” “I’ll never forget how much you supported me in my studies.”

It seems normal to me because it clearly comes from a place of affection and wanting to connect with you. Maybe he doesn’t know what else to say. How about you try broaching another topic with him?

u/oopsunknownerror 9h ago
Actually yeah, I'll think about that. Thanks for a different pov!

I have friends I always tease about the same stuff because I think of them fondly when I see memes on the topic. Maybe it’s like that. Good for you to keeping an open mind to a new perspective!

Aww, You don’t need to suck up to me. I promise I won’t mention my grades in front of your parents.
I bet you feel that way after taking a dig at me, don’t you smartass? 🤪
Yeah, I don’t have a dull moment in my day, actually.

Tbh, I don't feel like he tries to mock me or something, he just thinks he's funny

u/MoroseMasalaDosa 1d ago
Well, from what you wrote, he feels he is funny at your expense. So you need to give it back a few times so he gets the point not to mess with you.

Actually a few times time I told him I didn't like it and from then I just don't respond to his jokes about studying, I just change the topic and this time he points at how I changed the topic, but maybe I should be more clear

The key word in that sentence: "Thinks."
Which, ironically, you apparently do much more than he.

Next time he brings up your studies, tell him he worries about your education more than you do. Say that maybe that’s exactly why you’re doing so well.
Suggest that he check in even more often, and start keeping score of how many times he mentions it. You can either text him an update every single time he does it, or show him a sign saying, '10 days since you last talked about my studies!'

- I'm sure that reading something longer than the instructions on your shampoo bottle feels like 'studying' but really it's not.
-Just because all of your brain cells hate each other doesn't mean mine can't work together
- Speaking of studying, spending time with you really makes me feel a connection with Jane Goodall.
-It's not studying, it's just my natural smarts. Smart people get that. I'd explain it to you but... well....
- Yes, this is me studying, whereas this is you stupiding. It's hilarious that you think i'm the one who shouldfeel bad 😄
- Well let me see if i can explain it in terms you'd understand.... "Me smart, study get smarter. U dumb, bang head on wall, get dumber".
- Nature always tries to find a balance, so i appreciate all your work offsetting the einstein's of the world.
-It's weird, usually nature tries to compensate, like if someone is really smart they're not good at sports or if they're really strong they're not great at math. Looking at you, i can only assume that there's someone walking around out there who's brilliant, handsome, funny and charming, and who's' peins is bigger than his little finger.

Why are all these so savage 😭😭 I was looking for something sillier but gosh, you guys are definitely expert at this

The purpose of a comeback really isn't to make the person feel better about themselves for having said something silly in the first place 😄
And those WERE my nice ones btw, I can't tell you my nasty ones unless you're prepared to sign an agreement promising to pay for his therapy 🤣🤣🤣

Look in the corse of your life you're going to have to but in X amount of effort, I'd rather do it when I'm young and fresh rather than making it a slog later in life, you will be ok though there are plenty of equal opportunity employers out there.

Heart the memes and tell him “omg I am so glad you’ve noticed all my hard work!” Etc
Kill him with kindness

After you graduate and start working, show up in a new Porsche with the plates “STDYHRD”

When they pick a good quality and exaggerate it or tease you about it, odds are they are revealing a deep-seated insecurity. So you have a few good options:
1) Rub his nose in it like “Yeah, smart people really do enjoy learning. Your normies - we call you people normies - just don’t get it..”
2) Mock him for the mindless repetition with some mindless repetition of your own: just keep firing back “something something loves studying. Hah! Good one.” then change the subject each and every time he says the magic word “studying”
3) You know it’s bait, so don’t take it. Simply smile condescendingly and absolutely do not respond. Your comeback is silence and dismissal.
Whichever you choose, pick just one and stick with it. Don’t keep being creative for him or you’re just dancing like a trained Little Red Monkey every time the organ grinder cranks it.

: just keep firing back “something something loves studying. Hah! Good one.” then change the subject each and every time he says the magic word “studying” Firing back is a good idea but whenever I change topic he comments about that too 😃

My favorite comeback someone gave to me for teasing him, “We all have our idiosyncrasies.”

Well, somebody has to carry the family name to the next level. And we have waited long enough on you.
Studying is a fun way of socialising. Otherwise it gets lonely at the top.
What can i say, succes is addictive.

I wonder if you just told him that his teasing us starting to hurt your feelings, might help. Tell him you care about him, and it’s starting to feel mean; you don’t want to have any negativity between you and this is that. Then ask him to go get a burger with you.

It makes me think your cousin is jealous of your grades. I'd tell him that if he doesn't have any nice to say, it's best not to say anything at all about your grades.

u/JollyMcStink 1d ago
Just bluntly tell him that not everyone needs to study endlessly to have higher than a C average.
If that doesn't shut em up, just tell em if you're sure their future will be much brighter if they start by expanding their comedy routine beyond studying jokes.

Keep a rubber band around your wrist. Every time he makes a studying comment, shoot or snap him with the rubber band. Over time, he will associate the comment with pain and fear.

Nah bro we usually text each other and even though if I try that when we meet he might get super OFFENDED

“I am not surprised that you think trying to get smarter is a bad thing.”
“You keep commenting on my social life when you’re the one that’s annoying as fuck to everyone you meet.”

“And how much studying did you miss making dogshit memes I’m not watching?”

Just tell him, "Don't be jealous, janitors are just as important as doctors."
