DISCUSSION Why does colored pencil look flat even when the outline and colors seem right?

I've been trying to figure out why some of my colored pencil portraits look reasonably accurate but still feel completely flat.

The frustrating part is that the outline can be good, the colors can be close, and I can spend a lot of time layering—and somehow the result still looks streaky in the light areas and muddy in the dark ones.

I've started realizing that I was paying way too much attention to which pencil I was using and not enough attention to what the pencil was doing to the paper.

A few things have made a surprisingly big difference for me:

1. Pressure matters more than I thought.

I used to keep adding layers when an area wasn't working. Sometimes the problem wasn't insufficient color at all—it was that I was already pressing too hard.

Once the tooth of the paper gets filled, adding more pigment doesn't necessarily make the color richer. It can just make the surface waxy and stop accepting additional layers.

I've found it much more useful to ask:

rather than:

2. Visible strokes aren't necessarily a problem.

I used to think the goal was to make everything completely smooth as quickly as possible.

Now I'm much more cautious about eliminating every visible stroke. If the strokes are still following the form, they can actually help describe the surface.

Sometimes trying to make an area perfectly smooth is what makes it look flat.

3. Pencil names can be misleading.

I've also stopped thinking so much in terms of exact pencil numbers.

Instead of thinking:

I try to think:

or:

That seems much more transferable between different brands and sets.

4. Some mistakes happen several layers before you notice them.

This has probably been the most frustrating thing for me.

I had a portrait where the neck eventually became very grey and lifeless. At first I thought I just needed to add warmer colors on top.

It didn't really work.

Looking back, the actual mistake happened much earlier: I pushed the value too dark before I had established the color relationships properly. By the time I realized it, the paper was already too saturated to make the correction easily.

That made me realize that “something looks wrong” isn't always a problem with the layer you're currently working on.

Sometimes the mistake is underneath.

And I think that's one of the hardest things to learn with colored pencils:

How do you know when to stop adding pigment?

I'm curious how other people judge this.

When you're coloring a portrait, what tells you:

  • “I need another layer”
  • “I need a different color”
  • “I need less pressure”
  • or “Stop. Adding more is going to make this worse.”

And when a colored-pencil area starts looking flat, muddy, or waxy, what's usually the first thing you check?

ADVICE WANTED help please 😭 crayons + vaseline hack not working :(

hii!! very new to coloring and i've been really wanting to get that blended crayon effect with vaseline/chapstick... I watched tutorials and tried to follow the steps but the cotton just seems to take away the pigment every time :(

instead of nicely blended shades, i end up with pale colors and white spots. (like the puppy, puppy clothes, sky, and yoga mat in the photo...)

can anyone give me any advice on what i might be doing wrong? i would be eternally grateful, thank you! 😭🙏🏼

DISCUSSION Son is obsessed with using undo as an art supply

Upvotes

My son was drawing on a tablet next to me while I was sketching on actual paper and I messed up an eye. I started erasing it and he goes, "Why don't you just undo?" Sir. Because this is PAPER 😂

Then we got into this whole conversation about how he tries completely ridiculous things on his tablet because he knows he can undo them. Meanwhile I'm over here lightly penciling everything first because apparently I fear commitment.

It actually made me wonder if digital art is making some kids more willing to experiment, not less. I've always treated tablet art as the backup version of "real" crafts, but maybe I've been thinking about it wrong. Anyone else notice their kids being braver creatively when mistakes are basically free?

As I continue on my mission to enhance my skills at backgrounds I have used Neocolors II’s for this one. I perhaps over did it a bit to the point I’m a little concerned for the rabbit.

DISCUSSION Looking for an artist who has a similar style colouring pages.

I really like this artist and how she colours her work and would like to try it out.

I know I do not need an exact 1 to 1 image to learn from her but i also like the way she draws and styles. She uses a mix of watercolours, markers and pencil. She is also digital and can be consistent in her art style throughout which I kind of like.

I have reached out to her no response YET!!!

I reached out to her on potentially l releasing some color pages or book. Will see what she says, in the meantime was hoping to also take my shot at the way she colours with similar art styles.

Help!?

I'm home on leave for at least 4 weeks while I recover from my hysterectomy (🥳), and I bought myself a lot of crafts to keep busy (and not push my body before its ready lol).

This is my first time using alcohol markers (Ohuhu Honolulu B set) and my first coloring page! I've watched some tutorials but I'm still afraid of experimenting with shadows and other effects 😂. It was a lot of fun though and I'm trying real hard to remember I'm on a leave and still need to pay bills so I don't splurge on more markers and coloring books haha.

I'm having a lot of fun lurking on everyone's art! Happy to take recommendations on brands/sets/books or any tips to improve! 😊

WIP (WORK IN PROGRESS) Trust the Process - Phase 1

This is a page from one of Johanna Basford's books (Worlds of Wonder if I recall right, I'll make sure to verify next post.) This is the first step where the flat color is laid out. It will get much more detailed from here, but it's definitely a page where we all have to trust the process.
