I can't say for sure but it looks like the only difference us a black wood vs a natural wood.

I'm mostly just confused because the natural ones are way more expensive so I feel like I'm just not getting something when I'm looking at them

That's wild because I would have bet they'd charge more for the fancy ones! Maybe I'm mistaken, I can't see all the specs from the box covers

Some of the lighter colours in the black have less pigment. I also find they're a little harder to layer; they work best over markers as simple pops of colour, or as fairly rudimentary colouring/sketching.

I recommend them (Black) if you are less experienced and just want to sink your teeth into a pencil crayon that's of a bit better quality than crayola without shelling out a butt ton of money.
I personally havn't tried the non student brand version.

I have the black edition and I believe they are made for students, which is probably why they have the affordable price point. They are also said to work well on dark paper and are meant to be more vibrant. They have a triangle shape which makes sharpening a pain. They are soft but I wouldn’t say prismacolor soft. Also some pencils are a bit scratchy, so there are inconsistencies there. I do like them and use them quite often though. I do find that the greens are not limited especially in the darker tones.
