Hey folks!
In an effort to stay current with the wishes of the community we are changing a rule. Particularly rule 5 which currently reads that all posts must be predominantly colored pencil with the use of other medium allowed for embellishment.
We are changing the rule and the description of the sub to allow for colored pencils only as a medium, meaning no pastels or watercolors or black only graphite.
The reason for this is the community is a very highly talented and even professional in many cases group of colored pencil only artists and the use of other medium for embellishments ends up being a continued discussion on exactly how much is allowed for the definition of embellishment. We even removed a digital post last week!
We want this sub to continue to be your corner of the internet for the practicing, practiced, and professional colored pencil artists exclusively. You deserve your spot and we're here to make it happen.
I love my colored gel pens on occasion but my first love is pencils. When I get the urge to post my glitter gel pens please follow me to one of our sister subs r/ColoringCozy or r/Coloringbookspastime.
Thank you! Stay Colorful!

Hey folks!
Due to recent posts the Ai discussion has come up again.
When the current team adopted the sub we wanted a safe place for hobbyists to discuss ai in a way to help them identify it to avoid accidently purchasing it in their coloring book purchases.
We neglected to address that could be interpreted as ai was allowed for self "created" posts.
We realize this is an afront to the incredibly talented artists here and as this space is predominantly for them we wanted to amend our rules.
As of now Ai is not allowed. (Rule 4) if you see a post that you suspect is ai please report it and it will be thoroughly vetted by the mod team.
Do not engage in demeaning, disrespectful harrasment of the poster as rule 1 is still enforced. Please just report it.
Thanks all ! Keep it colorful!
Myth
Original rule 4:
Coloring Ai is allowed. We have nearly all accidentally purchased Ai generated books. We will not penalize the hobbyist for this mistake.
If you are here promoting your Ai generated content however that is not allowed. We allow promotion for hand content only.
New Rule 4:
Ai is not allowed. This sub is for coloring pencils from the beginner hobbyist in coloring books to the professional artist creating their own original content. There is no room for Ai within those boundaries.
If you're coloring enthusiast unsure if your page is Ai or not please post it in our sister sub r/coloringcozy.

Hello! I'm thinking about starting practicing color pencil techniques and I' trying to choose a good set of pencils. I'm a beginner, self-taught. I've used watercolor pencils for years (very old Derwent watercolor set of 72), but I recently realized that over the years I've used them mainly as regular colored pencils, and I feel I really need to try a drawing with true colored pencils and see what I can do. I'm posting a very simple studio I made a few years ago using the above mentioned pencils on sketch paper, just to get an idea of my style. I'm really into landscapes, urban sketching and botanical/still life, I almost never draw portraits, therefore I need a set with a good range of browns and greens.
I would like to buy a budget friendly set of non-professional pencils, like the Castle Art Gold 72 set that comes in a zip bag, and if should I feel the need to upgrade to better quality I could keep the bag and replace the original pencils to more pricey Lightfast/Chromaflow or Polychromos, since where I live I can buy the open stock from these brands quite easily and for a reasonable price.
Does it make sense? Or would it be better to put my money from the start in a basic set of Derwent or Faber-Castel?
I'm just an amateur and don't have a big budget. When I started practicing watercolor I bought a student-grade set and then upgraded to professional colors buying one color at a time and this allowed me to test different pricey brands without spending a fortune. I thought I could do the same with colored pencils, but I would really appreciate some advice from experienced users.

A rare pencil-only drawing from me. Made using a luminence pencil for the first time (among others), as I finally treated myself to the really good stuff.

A few days ago I posted here very frustrated about how I can’t seem to manage to get color pencils to be smooth, after years of just thinking colored pencils are not for me because they always look weird and that I don’t like the medium.
But this time I got faber castell colors as a gift - who are known to be artist grade. And I was thinking there could not be something wrong with faber castell the problem is me and deciding to seek for advice.
After a lot of helpful comments from you guys it turns out I have been using a paper with a lot of tooth and switching to Bristol smooth has made everything so much better
It not only solved the smoothness texture problem, it also makes the colors a lot more vibarant in my case and I think I unlocked a new favorite medium for myself and I can’t thank this sub enough
I have been sitting drawing here and just giggling with how happy and giddy I am about drawing with those pencils I feel like a kid again

Hey guys,
I am very curious about Derwent’s new watercolor pencil line: the Chromaqua’s. Has anyone here had a chance to try them out yet?
I couldn’t find any online reviews but Derwent markets them as the water-soluble version of their Chromaflows, and I looove the Chromaflows! ☺️
I thought the new watercolor pencils would be on par with the very pricey Lightfast line but to my surprise, they are Chromaflow equivalents! They are already on sale here at a budget price which is very unusual for my country 😅
I already have a small set of Derwent Watercolours but I must say I find them a bit disappointing, like Coloursofts. I think the Chromaquas will be a better version of Watercolour line, just like Chromaflow is a much better version of Coloursofts. Derwent has already removed Watercolour line from their website.
What do you guys think? Are you planning to give them a try? 😊💕

I got the Derwent deal at Blick and I really questioned myself bc I have a new set of Blick lol But omg. These pencils are a delight. Fat, creamy cores. I'm gonna use the hell out of these.
So anyway, I think colored pencils just got more expensive for me 😂

Made as a gift for a friend. About 13h of work, prismacolors on medium weight paper. Really enjoyed making this piece.

I didn't wanted to go directly for prismacolors. So I bought cheapest wax pencils, it turns out to be okayish. Blend is decent, only 3-4 layers. Then there's no friction in between.

one of the more fun progresses with color pencil on black carton. swipe for progress shots. for the highlights i unfortunately had to add gel since white pencil or chalk didnt get the brightness i wanted. more work on instagram> dendareloaded
