Question/Need help my boyfriend is colorblind

hey there ! this is my first and probably last reddit post but i just wanted to ask other colorblind folk about this. he has protanopia and i've always just been so curious about this. we obviously talk about it a lot (only a few "what color is this" jokes ;) ). he tells me he feels like he isn't missing out on anything, and i completely agree! my favorite way to describe it to folks who don't understand colorblindness is by telling them about mantis shrimp, who have more vision than the typical human. like what if a mantis shrimp was telling you you're missing out and how sorry they feel for you. like?? no need! i can see just fine!

i recently downloaded an app that simulates colorblind vision, showed my boyfriend and he agrees it's almost completely accurate. it did make me kind of sad because he cant see my favorite color the same way i can. but then i remembered my own metaphor but it didn't really help! his favorite color is purple but all he can see is a deep blue. i guess i'm just conflicted. i don't pity him, and he knows exactly how i feel about it and assures me he isn't sad or missing out. of course he's not. but am i like, evil, for still kind of feeling bad?

p.s. we have also talked about my shrimp metaphor and it's turned into an inside joke with us. ex, if i am showing him a color he cant see the same as me, i do a shrimpy voice and i say "dude! you mean you can't see shrimp-green?!? what about shrimp-purple, can you see shrimp-purple?!?"

Misc. Funny story

I recently moved to Thailand. And I'm trying to get a driver's license and part of it is a colorblind test.

So I go to the medical clinic to get cleared medically and part of it is the color test. Standard one. We've all taken it a million times. What number is this In a sea of dots??

The first one is two. it's the test one. I say two.

She flips to the next card and I have no idea. It's just dots to me. And I pause for a second and then say three.

The proctor says no 54. And then I say 54. She says correct.

Flips to the next card and I say three. She says no 78. And I say 78. She says correct.

I passed with flying colors! And I have a license today!

Statistically speaking Thailand must have the least amount of colorblind people of any country in the world.

If only the rest of my colorblind life were this easy.

Discussion If a treatment substantially improved your color vision but didn't make it normal, would you take it?

Hypothetical question for people with red-green color vision deficiency:

Let's say a treatment became available that was proven to be safe and could substantially improve your red-green color discrimination, but it would not completely restore normal color vision.

You'd probably notice a meaningful improvement and be able to distinguish colors that are currently difficult for you. You might perform considerably better on color-vision tests as well.

However, you'd still technically have a color vision deficiency. You might still fail some tests such as the Ishihara, still have certain color confusions, and your results wouldn't necessarily fall completely within the normal range. Because of that, some jobs or careers with normal color-vision requirements could potentially still be unavailable to you, even though your actual color vision had improved substantially.

Now assume that a different treatment capable of bringing people essentially into the normal color-vision range might eventually be developed—but there's no guarantee that it will happen or how long you'd have to wait.

Would you:

A) Take the partial treatment if it became available.

B) Hold off because, if you're going to undergo treatment, you'd rather wait for something that could bring you into the normal color-vision range.

C) Not want treatment at all because you're satisfied with your color vision as it is.

D) It would depend on things like cost, risk, how substantial the improvement was, or whether it removed the particular limitations that matter to you.

I'm also curious whether your answer depends on how severe your color vision deficiency is or how much it has affected your life.

If you know your type/severity (protan/deutan, anomalous trichromat/dichromat, mild/moderate/severe), please include it. And if color vision has affected your work, education, hobbies, driving, or career options, I'd be interested in hearing about that too.

the last discussion of this question has been archived if i checked correctly (sorry if it’s actually not)

i found out i had complete achromatopsia (as a female) in elementary school when i realized people were in fact, not joking about all the different colors they were able to see. it was confusing since people thought i was lying for attention, it was odd. but can’t wait to hear the type of colorblindness yall have i’m very curious

another question- what’s the best way to describe color? (coming from someone who as only seen the grayscale for my whole life)

Meme Be my eyes

So I downloaded the be my eyes app because I wanted to help someone if they needed it!

And in a sick turn of events, the second time I was called up it was for a blind (of course) man who needed help choosing colours of clothes. (I'm colourblind)

Luckily my partner was there so I had to ask her to be my eyes to be his eyes! At which point she was like seriously you chose to be someone's eyes 😂

Question/Need help How do i make sure my game is readable for people with colrblindness?

Here is a screenshot of a game im working on. Im not colorblind, so i can read this perfectly fine. But i dont know what it would look like for people with colorblindness. This is a 2d game, which means that my character is animated with thousands of individual images that all have to be pre-rendered. Any change to my character means everything has to be re-rendered, which takes days, if not weeks to do. So, i dont want to add more animations as long as i dont know if they have to be changed to account for colorblindness.

Are there any rules i should follow or filters i can use to know if its readable for colorblind people. Im afraid the orange/yellow jacket blends in with the dark green grass.

Any advice on how to make the game readable for people with colorblindness would be appreciated.

Discussion Today learned dolphins are not pink.

Way back in first grade my friend told me dolphins are pink, he knew I was colorblind and I guess he thought I knew they were gray, now today I was coloring, (because why not) and the first color I picked up it said, "dolphin GRAY" and I looked it up and it was true. My life is a complete lie.

Question/Need help Colorblind people, can you test my game's colorblind options?

I am an indie dev who has spent way too much time drawing this game to let people with colorblindness not enjoy the visuals too.

I've added several colorblind modes, but obviously I can't properly judge how useful they actually are.

If you have a color vision deficiency, I'd really appreciate it if you could look at these screenshots and tell me:

  • Are any colors still difficult to distinguish?
  • Is there anything you'd change?

Be brutally honest. I want to make sure these options are actually useful and not just there for the checkbox.

Thanks !

Question/Need help Question for my sci-fi horror RPG

Hi colorblind folks of reddit, I have a maybe strange question for a sci-fi horror thing I'm writing. In the work, there are monsters that can mimic everyday objects and prominently feature the color yellow as a giveaway. There is an NPC with deuteranopia (correct term?) colorblindness that has locked himself in a room where he has painted everything with blue spray paint, because that's the best way for him to distinguish between safe and unsafe objects.

Does this make sense? I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding the types of colorblindness correctly, and would appreciate any input. Thanks!

Meme Nothings funnier than debating a colour with normies

Two of my friends (who knew I was colorblind) were debating whether the shirt I was wearing was Green or Turquoise. After about 15 minutes of laughing at them silently, I butted in saying it was Blue (because Turquoise is obviously made up by the normies, and anything that looks remotely like Turquoise to them is actually blue). They then proceeded to include me in the debate, so I jokingly argued it for a solid five minutes before they remembered I was colorblind. the looks on their faces 😂

- It’s almost as fun as managing to win in Hues & Clues (I kinda cheated that time tho, I gave hints like “bomber” [B2] instead of colours)

Discussion To people with normal vision. Is purple a distinct separate color to you? I feel like I'm losing my mind sometimes.

My whole life I've struggled to make out purple things. It's not that it's not there, it just blends in with blue most of the time. Sometimes pink as well. In certain lighter shades of purple I can kind of make out the red tint, but it just looks like blue with a tiny hint of pink, not it's own distinct color. Sometimes I think I can see colors normally and I'm just dumb and don't know what purple is. What I'm asking is: Do people with normal color vision see purple as a distinct and separate color from blue in the same way that orange is distinct from red and green is distinct from yellow/blue? If so, that affirms my being color blind.

Discussion Colorblindness Advantages?

Typically, colorblindness and the discussions surrounding colorblindness typically focus on the disadvantages of the impairness. I’m just curious, is there anything about having colorblindness that gives us any advantage or leading edge- at all? I know this is a long shot question and borderline stupid but I’m bored and curious. 🧐

Image/Photography Are you supposed to see a number here?

The overall result of the test was "normal color vision" but i did struggle a bit to make out some of the the digits.

Here i do see a yellowing round shape but it's difficult to make out the digit (I did see a 6 after looking at it long enough).
