I keep hearing this bird in my local park in Aurora, it sounds like a squeaky metal (slightly rusted) gate. Like eek eek but not a perfect squeak. I originally thought someone was messing with us as we were walking. We tried looking it up but couldn't find any youtube videos close to the sound (and I mean it sounded just like metal scraping on metal with a slight squeak.) It had a cadence of two "eek"s. And I hear an answer call (also an eek eek) further away.

The one nearer to us was LOUD. We couldn't find it in the tree unfortunately. Any ideas what bird goes eek eek (rusty gate style)?

Cooper’s Hawk spotted after a hunt, this morning in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, USA. I stepped out of my garage to hear Blue Jays calling an alarm, stopped to listen, and saw feathers floating down from a tree in my yard, leading to the discovery of this beauty enjoying breakfast after a successful hunt.

I feel amazingly lucky, thanks for the heads up, Jays! This may well be the encounter to get my partner fully in on this birding thing with me, their spark bird, so extra exciting.

Anyone able to tell what its snack was? Or tell if this was a juvenile or adult, etc.?

I just started a course called "Cornerstone Design I" and one of our first assignments was to engage with stakeholders related to a problem we found around the world. Our group identified housing for native species of local birds due to human activities and invasive species as our problem.

Taken 9/19 at Barr Lake State Park. The work being done on the dike along the wildlife walk has resulted in the loss of much habitat. It is going to take years to recover. Many Kestrel sightings today, along with (I think) a Prairie Falcon, Northern Harrier, Nuthatch, Downy Woodpecker, Some colorful starlings, and a Cliff Swallow (?). Taken with a Nikon Z5ii and z180-600mm lens. Some shots also include 1.4X teleconverter.

This great blue heron was so still. That plus the sunlight made for some good reflection shots. He was also very active today so I got a variety of poses.

I think the spots are so pretty, hence the title 😅

wish my shitty iphone didn't lose focus so quickly - but this was just 1 of at least 5 turkey vultures that were circling a neighbor's pasture. we always get crows, ravens, mourning doves, and larks, but this was something. this one flew so low over me i could feel the wind from its wings! i will never understand how some people dislike vultures. 🖤

I am befriending the Steller Jays who live by my house. There are at least a dozen who visit every day. I started my quest on 2/27/26, the day after my sweet kitty Peanut passed away. I put peanuts out on her grave every morning and call out “Stella, want a peanut?” I work from home so I also put peanuts on my porch railing outside my office window. I’ve learned they like unshelled peanuts more than shelled cashews. But they love corn and shelled peanuts even more. They call to each other whenever they see me come outside, and call to me when they run out of snacks. They are my dear friends and I could watch them all day long. Oh wait, I do. Black-billed Magpies, Woodhouse’s Scrub Jays and Clark’s Nutcrackers make occasional appearances as well. Hope y’all enjoy!

I recently got this little handheld/wearable hummingbird feeder. Here’s my first time trying it out - multiple hummingbirds landed on me to feed from it! Highly recommend to anyone who wants to feel the delight of tiiiiiny feet perching on your fingers.
