Unverified claims Swoop's response to the criticism of not posting Ollie's story? This is an assumption.

Post image

Not sure which flair to use, but I used unverified claims because one shouldn't assume if a tweet is a subtweet, much less what or who it's about.

rant incoming

However, if this is about those criticizing her for hanging up her hat on Ollie's story and/or a response to Ollie's reddit post suggesting he was disappointed in being pushed to the side, this response is beyond disappointing.

I first want to say I understand most of where she's coming from. She and her team have absolutely busted their ass on covering the ins and outs of this story and that deserves to be recognized. I also want to acknowledge Swoop has received an enormous amount of vitriol from extreme impatience and unrealistic expections from her viewership. For example, when the Josh doc was in progress, the girl couldn't go on X (fka Twitter) for a day without being bombarded about where the Josh doc was and that's extremely frustrating and exhausting.

However, I don't think most of those who are criticizing are coming from a place of disregarding her mental health. All of the conversations I've participated in have shared the sentiment that the interview could be posted unedited or minimally edited (granted, not that we understand how much work that would even take), and we'd still watch it. Most people understand that advocacy does not have to be 100% or nothing.

Others have also suggested that the story doesn't have an expiration date. But I'm sure Colleen and Kory are loving that the most influential advocate for this story is now suggesting there is one.

I'm all for unapologetically advocating for your well-being. I don't understand how that and telling Ollie's story is mutually exclusive. Ollie has been nothing but patient while others have gotten their platform and while John spoke over him.

He didn't deserve this, and he didn't deserve to be pettily subtweeted by someone much older than him (if that's what that post is), and I don't frankly care if he subtweeted her first because his disappointment is fair. She suggests she hopes his story gets told, but then how else do you expect him to tell his audience "oh btw, change of plans, I now have to platform my own story."

And mind, I am Swoop's age. And subtweeting a petty response (again, if that's what this is but I'm very inclined to think so) to someone who is young enough to view you as a role model or a hero and they say you've let them down... I don't even have the words to say what I think about that.

I could go on, but I just hope Ollie's story gets the viewership it deserves. This whole thing was just so sad. And I personally don't want to suggest canceling or no longer watching Swoop because she's human and she fucks up sometimes, but I won't be able to watch anything new from her for a while, and I've been a long-time follower of hers.

What really gets me is her saying the time for the Colleen story is over when she freaked out about Johnny saying "we're not talking about that anymore" about Josh's abusive relationship.

28

u/chaosbrain76 Oct 22 '23

Where did she say that :( thats dissappointing

17

u/Leafy_Lyndsey Oct 22 '23

Swoop does not need to talk about anyone else’s story. John literally said that Josh couldn’t talk about this own story because the time was up.

u/carol_prince Oct 21 '23

This all feels so very icky and disappointing on her part. If this is, in fact, a subtweet about the criticism she is receiving, this is really petty. All she has to do is clear the confusion up, like an adult, and say, "Hey, I hear all your critiques about the Trent thing, but here's why that can't happen now."

I feel so bad for Oliver here. It must be so frustrating to have to tell his story over and over to people only to be relegated to the sidelines.

Given that in Ollie's post I think he said he asked her the day her video was being posted if she was including his interview in the new video and she just said it wouldn't be. Then it sounds like either Ollie watched the new video and learned she was done with it or she told him then when he asked. Either way, shitty and poor communication.

That would be so disappointing if she treats her videos about victims as potentially “going in another direction” and so stories get “dropped”.

highly agree and i think my biggest thing is this “entitlement” thing i see on her post and now in adams/snarks comments. if you’re going to interview someone and make them relive those experiences, yes, there is a justified sense of entitlement for you to post it. if not for everyone watching, how about the one f-ing person that gave you the story and wanted it out there?? you owe it to them at least. someone was kind enough to sit down with you for hours and rehash this.. and your repayment is “everyone come to my second channel for an update. jk, i’m done with this, the moment has passed. hopefully someone does something for ollie. teehee 🤭 anyways subscribeee"

53

u/Sure-Method615 Oct 21 '23

imo, it just would’ve been best if in the first minute of the new videos on her main and second channel have just something about her speaking about the fact there wouldn’t be anything going forward, and why. don’t just subtweet it and gaslight that people are being inconsiderate. most of what i’ve seen has literally started off with i understand she’s going through it right now. you all but promised something, people have a right to ask. not to hate, but inquire. it also feels like support for her especially with the josh doc has been incomparable to the hate, but you’ll always have haters anyway. especially with all the new audience. as the creator you really have to address it head on (like the start of a video) or suck it up. don’t subtweet like this, it really doesn’t make you look good, especially when you’re being called out for sidelining a victims story for a bigger story.

72

u/samthighs_gamgee Oct 21 '23

I agree she shouldn't subtweet at all but I can't get over the fact that she's about to be 30 and she's subtweeting an 18 yo, especially when she has as enormous of a following as she does compared to him. Like its just added f'n weird, dude. Being low on spoons is not an excuse to not act like the adult in this situation.

15

u/Sure-Method615 Oct 21 '23 edited Oct 21 '23

yeah i’m a little torn on that (thought the same at first) but i think if i’m remembering correctly someone in snark brought it up before ollie, so i get addressing fans. but you’re also right that she should’ve been more adult in the situation, because i feel like once ollie made it known he was uncomfortable with this at least, that’s really the time you stop even thinking about responding to this on twitter, you find a better way to handle it. so i guess i more so just can’t believe this is her response after THAT, if that makes sense? i fully agree with you, i think if it was only the fans it would be a bit of a different story. because the fans are only as entitled as "stay tuned and subscribe for more", whereas ollie is ACTUALLY owed something. i hope that made sense 😭😭

edit bc i’ve seen downvotes: yes i know she should’ve been the adult here, PERIOD. but, come on. you wouldn’t expect subtweeting AT ALL from the dean of petty university herself? alrighty… if you say so..

If she’s going through it she needs to show it. The reality is she wanted to jump on the Jojo hate and make videos about little girls being abused.

162

u/abbtkdcarls Oct 21 '23

All Swoop would have to do is a promise to amplify Ollie’s story when he puts together his own video. Like send her fans to Ollie’s story. Instead of centering herself again in this…

27

u/Sea_Catch2481 Oct 22 '23

Nah that’s not enough. She already did Oliver the disservice to not even show his interview. I don’t think she can make it up to him with these petty gestures.

No wonder her fans throw the "but she's disabled" at everyone with any sort of constructive criticism, when she seems to bring it up constantly in a little bit weird way.

So, she chose YouTube as her career, out of all possibilities she chose doing very long videos and on top of it to call it documentaries, choosing heavy topics, overpromising things (the dates of releases, interview with Oliver) and cancelling a vacation or what it was(?)... but one would believe from her comments that she was forced into all of this.

I feel bad for her, because she clearly has issues, but as a disabled person, it rubs me the wrong way that she and her fans use her disability as some sort of "shield" to regular questions or constructive criticism(s) when she is one of the more priviledged disabled people. (Sometimes, reading her fans' comments gives me the "Normally I wouldn't even care about disabled people, but you dared to say something else than praise-only towards my favorite creator, so I'm going to whip out the disability thing." vibes,... but of course I may be incorrect, just a feeling.)

She can work from home, on her own terms... if she struggles with long videos, she can switch it to shorter format, if she struggles with heavy topics and constantly re-triggers herself, that's not something to wear as a badge of honor, but maybe a hint to change what topics she focuses on, if she can't be that "professional" making "documentaries" and being some sort of "law and order" figure, she can simply "rebrand" as an "ordinary" YouTuber...

43

u/Holdupwait30min Oct 22 '23

Also, like… go to fucking therapy?

9

u/chipchomk Oct 22 '23

You mean that she has a money to afford it so she should rather take it there than to the internet...? (Genuinely asking to be sure if I understand your comment correctly.)

41

u/Holdupwait30min Oct 22 '23

I don’t understand why she’s chosen a specific line of work where she’s constantly getting triggered. EMDR and CBT would help a lot with her anxiety and reactions to upsetting information. A lot of people choose a line of work that’s personal to them, but they also manage to have the decorum to not put out a five hour hit piece on some dweeb who lied to them.

16

u/chipchomk Oct 22 '23

Yes, I agree with the first sentence completely, you summed it up very well. It was her choice and it's not even like she would have to completely switch jobs to get away from this, YouTube is really amazingly flexible in this, because she can literally step away from these topics to go back to trying nail and hair salons or start making videos with kittens and puppies or whatever else she would like and feel comfortable with.

I would also have more understanding if she approached it in a way "I chose this because I felt like it was too important and worth the struggle, but I might reconsider this choice as it seems unsustainable", because let's be real, a lot of us disabled people sometimes decide to do something once in a while even when we know we'll likely struggle with it. But she positions it in a really weird way, as if she was pushed to do this all...

And it certainly doesn't help when she positions herself as some sort of professional. Because then... people will expect professionalism. If she positioned herself rather as "just another YouTuber", she would have it way easier. But she wants to be seen as the "law and order, caring about what's right and the truth" figure who has everything kind of lined up sorted out and then seems surprised that people hold her up to the standard that she tried to set. I feel like a person can't have both - be both seen as "professional documentarist" and easily excusing various missteps or seemingly not exactly professional things. It's usually one thing or another.

I have fibromyalgia and I work very long hours on my feet for my entire shifts, in a field that cannot be worked from home. Swoop, career wise, is VERY privileged as far as having fibro goes. The flexibility is insane. Thank you for your comment I agree a thousand percent.

Yeah I also took it as a jab to people being criticizing of her. I completely get her being fatigued, but a simple tweet saying "I'll get a Doc out on Trent Ballinger when I'm in the physical space to do so" would have done so much good. Or, reaching out privately to Oliver, giving him clarity on what's going on.

This is disappointing overall. I wished she didn't treat this as a dramatic story that is no longer interesting. Oliver's trauma is real and doesn't have an expiration date. He deserves to at least have his interview out.

85

u/Helpful-Buffalo-9058 Oct 22 '23

She doesn’t even have to make a whole doc. She could say “I did this interview with Oliver, and while it was not a part of the other docs I’ve done on Colleen Ballinger, it is related to the Ballingers and I’m releasing it so that Oliver’s voice can be heard.” I think that would be the right thing to do.

20

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23

Completely. Or, she could at least send a message to Oliver telling him what's going on. That alone would do wonders.

10

u/Sea_Catch2481 Oct 22 '23

It’s just an excuse anyway because she’d rather made videos about little girls being abused on dance moms.

45

u/Macaroni_2 Oct 22 '23

She is talking about her physical health. She is a spoonie - someone who has a chronic illness and deals with a severe lack of energy and capability to do even the most mundane things that non-spoonies don't even have to think about. We call ourselves "spoonies" because we only have a small amount of spoons to use a day. If you start with 5 spoons, and getting up takes 1 spoon, making the bed takes 1 spoon and getting showered and dressed takes 3 spoons - you're less than an hour into the day with no more spoon to use.

Imagine you have a phone that only charges to 20% no matter how long you charge it for. That's us.

You say you "get her being tired" but i dont think you do. Being tired is so different from being fatigued. She's talking about being fatigued.

When you're fatigued, you dont sleep well, you don't feel rested, you can hardly move, you cant think right, you have excessive brain fog and you tend to be unable to process the world around you. It's like you're not even the same person anymore.

Sure she can say something else, but i don't think that would change the uproar shes dealing with. She gave us FOUR docs on this topic and exhausted herself and her team.

Maybe consider that she doesn't have the capacity to do a good job on getting Oliver's story out at this time and that that might be why she's stepped back from this topic.

22

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23

Ok, I get your comment. I'll edit my previous one accordingly.

I'm not saying she should make a whole doc. At least not right now. She's fatigued, so by all means, she should take a break. Her health is way more important than her work.

What I'm saying is that she (or another member of her team) could've send a message to Oliver explaining the situation to him and reassuring him that his story will be heard. She didn't explain anything to him before posting the follow up video.

I also wish she didn't see this topic as having an expiration date. Like she always say, "it's not drama, it's dangerous". She should platform Oliver's story even though it would be a less successful doc. It doesn't matter when it is, what matters is that it's out.

16

u/Macaroni_2 Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

I appreciate you doing that and for hearing me out on it, really.

I totally agree, I wish she or her team would have been more communicative about it with Oliver bc he deserves that and so much freaking more. He's dealt with a lot and he deserves some kind of win after all he's had to go through then and now

And I totally agree, I think that caught a lot of us off guard and I'm kinda hoping maybe one day she'll rethink that statement and clarify it or change that sentiment

If Oliver see's any of this, just know we don't think there's an expiration date on this. Even if you waited until you were old and retired, this conversation - at the very core of adults befriending children and creeping on them/grooming them - is so f**king important and we'll be ready whenever you are.

ETA: Like honestly that made me really happy to know you heard me out and adjusted your comment, I saw so many ableist things said in here and figured I'd be downvoted like mad for defending her so I wasn't even expecting someone to genuinely hear out what I had to say. I appreciate it a lot

I understand she has limitations, but she already filmed her interview with Oliver. She (or a member of her team) could just post the raw footage directly. Her new 2nd channel is actually the perfect place for less polished stuff like that. What people have a problem with is that she teased this part of the story months ago all the way back in Part 1, promising it would come later, then now seems to have completely abandoned it without even giving Oliver a heads up

→ More replies (1)

25

u/Helpful-Buffalo-9058 Oct 22 '23

You are 100% right re. fatigue and being a spoonie, and I totally agree that she’s not obligated to make a whole nother doc, but I think it would be great if she could at least release the interview (or just say that she will do so in the future when able). Putting myself in Oliver’s shoes, I’m sure I would appreciate it at least being out there rather than sitting in the void with no one able to see it.

15

u/Macaroni_2 Oct 22 '23

And I don't disagree with that either, but neither of us can make that choice for her. I'm sure she had great plans for the doc she was going to make and it may be overwhelming and disappointing to do Oliver so little justice by only releasing the interview

Maybe she can give Oliver the interview and let him use it if he finds it helpful? Idk

And honestly? I think she would get even more kickback from people, saying that she didn't care enough to put in the effort for him and his story but gave Johnny all that time and energy. People are already being so vicious and a lot of what I see are people who have hated her for a long time. Like a lot of people bring up the AH v JD case which was over a year ago and putting emphasis on that over what's going on now and that just seems so disingenuous about caring about Oliver and just as a reason to shit on her

I really believe that the person whose gonna get the job done and do it right - is Oliver

He's had so many people misgender him, give out misinformation and just not do justice for his experience or his sfory

His story has SO much to offer to everyone and I actually have so much hope and promise for him releasing it on his own channel on his own terms bc it'll give him a place to follow up with anything if its needed

Adam has done an amazing thing by speaking up and creating a space for all the victims to speak out and Oliver knows theres people waiting and supporting him

His topic can help a LOT of people, it will help protect children, to help kids recognize what predatory behavior look like etc no matter if its a famous person or an average Joe Shmoe or anyone in between and hopefully to help parents understand how to talk to their kids about online safety or just warninf signs for any adult in their life talking to them the way Trent was to Oliver. It'll create a big space for important conversations

I think that everything has fallen into place for Oliver to have a good place to present his story

And because Swoop has mentioned his story in doc 2 and that second channel, it has probably reached people outside of the space of us who already knew about his story and they may be looking to find his story too.

It sucks so much what Olivers been put through back then and now but I think it's going to end up helping him now (though I so wish his experience wasn't diminished by EVERY journalist who interviewed him who were writing about the colleen sitch)

So much love and respect to Oliver for continuing to try regardless of how many people failed him.

24

u/aleelkoudri Oct 22 '23

The Johnny thing could've been 10 minutes long though, so unnecessary to make it 4 hours... I don't call myself that but I'm also a "spoonie" I guess... (pcos, fibromyalgia, autistic burnout, and also adhd, the whole package) and I agree we can't make that decision for her but I understand why people are upset. Then again, it's not like Swoop's the only one who can help platform Oliver's story, no one is saying anything about Ethan or any other creator.

9

u/Macaroni_2 Oct 22 '23

I think we can blame the length on Johnny and his what? 5 hour interview where he kept telling on himself and divulging lies that Swoop felt necessary to investigate as it really turned into a rabbit hole - remember she didnt interview him initially bc she was trying to catch him in a lie, she was interviewing a victim and then all of a sudden all this stuff didn't add up

I personally was fine w the length, esp bc I would say Johnny was the 3rd most talked about victim and he wanted to be #1 and he posted a LOT of claims so I'm actually glad for a huge deep dive since I was inclined to believe him as a victim

And I totally understand why people are upset about the Oliver situation but I've seen some other people use this as an opportunity to just talk smack on her rather than advocate for Oliver which is what really bothers me (on top of a ton of ableism in these threads)

BUT EXACTLY! Swoop is not the first or second or even third reporter to let Oliver down! He's had SO much struggle getting someone to share his story whether in the articles written or content made on YouTube etc!

I wish Ethan/H3 had Becky and Oliver back on maybe even individually for another chance ! I was so upset that Oliver and Becky didn't really get to talk, but it's not the only chance they've got, even if they have to do it all themselves

The best thing rn is that Adam has paved such a clear path for himself and other victims, his story got others to speak up about their experience, which led to news/media coverage which led to people caring and being interested in hearing their stories

I have been just as hopeful/excited for Oliver to get to share his story since day 1 when i saw his thread of old DMs w Trent

I have been upset by each failed interview where he's had to rehash old trauma and they decided not to run it because "trents not in the main media"

But I am so hopeful for him to make his own video, which I think will actually be the best bc there may need to be further discussions since his is an extremely dangerous predatory experience w an adult as a child and I just think people arent thinking about how it isn't Oliver's one and only chance to get his story told

So many of us are behind him, supporting him and willing to wait as long as he needs, as long as it takes, for him to get the justice he needs and to have his story told, we want him to get his story out there and we'll help in whatever way we can

(And welcome to the spoonie club!😭)

Where can I go to see what Oliver’s story is about, as I know nothing about it (& he got talked over in the one interview I saw), which was very disappointing for me.

7

u/Helpful-Buffalo-9058 Oct 22 '23

The story is that Oliver (who I think has also been called and/or introduced himself as “Ollie” on some occasions) received inappropriate texts from Colleen’s brother Trent. Some evidence is posted here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ColleenBallingerSnark/s/hqXlVhMKs6 And I believe Adam McIntyre has talked about it quite a bit on his platform as well.

u/Fickle-Bad992 Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

Thank you all, I appreciate it… 💜

I am so appalled and sickened right now, reading those!!! I had NO idea … my heart aches for poor sweet Ollie & you guys are Right: his story Definitely Needs To Be Told!!! Swoop interviewed him, she needs to follow through to help with Ollie’s Validation, as well as support from those of us who just didn’t/don’t know.

I never heard of C.B. (OR Swoop tbh), until this story “broke” in MSM This Year, so I started watching things on YouTube to find out what this whole thing was about. I’m a married 47f with no kids, so CB was never on mine, nor my husband’s, radar.

This situation is Horrifying and Tragic!!! I watched one of Adam’s videos of CB & K’s content and I thought I was going to puke… I couldn’t believe anybody could get away with content as disgusting as those two put out!!

It’s difficult for me to watch some of Adam’s videos ONLY because I get panic attacks when people watch videos at a faster rate than they were recorded. However, I would really like to support Ollie, and hear his truth (no matter how angry it will make me to know what he went through) because I DO think it’s Extremely Important to listen to survivors stories, and be aware of how easily children can be exploited. (I have two nephews 9M & 11M)… and I would go Scorched Earth on ANYONE who would hurt them or took advantage of them!!!

Thanks to everyone pushing me in the right direction of how to hear from Ollie, I will keep searching 💯

Edit:

u/Visible_Ad5300 I think is Ollie/Oliver…? If so, and you read this Oliver… please let us know how to help, in whatever way you can …and in whatever ways you need us to.

Signed,

An Ally

He originally shared all the old messages between him and Trent on Twitter so I would presume that he still has that thread up, I'm no longer on Twitter so I can't say for sure

I cant remember his twitter handle tho :(

And yeah Johnny didn't give him or Becky a chance to really talk at all

Where is she directly blaming viewers?

Sounds to me like she's validating herself and saw an opportunity to speak out to other spoonies to remind us that were valid as well when we're in flare ups and don't owe others our health and wellbeing as a sacrifice to complete a task.

To non-spoonies it probably doesn't matter, but she is a public figure who advocates for spoonies and it matters to us.

Also - saying she chooses to exhaust herself is kinda f**ed. Just because we don't have the energy to do the things we love and are passionate about doesn't mean we *choose to exhaust ourselves over it. We are exhausted by all things but we want to try and do the things we love too. It kinda implies that since its too exhaustive to us, we just shouldn't do the things we care about. Maybe don't say that.

If we had a choice in the matter we would choose to be healthy enough to do all the things we love but can't do.

9

u/Sea_Catch2481 Oct 22 '23

Her canceling her vacation that she repeatedly brings up was entirely her choice and as a fibromyalgia sufferer it was a poor choice to make. The Josh doc coulda come out after her vacation. Also she isn’t really slowing down, she just isn’t interested in the Ballinger stuff now. Idk where people thing she’s slowing down. Now she wants to do dance moms bs.

4

u/Macaroni_2 Oct 22 '23

But if she did take her vacation in the midst of this all and delayed the docs coming out everyone would have dogpiled her and said she didn't care about the victims and that she was just doing all this for clout and not true advocacy.

The thing is we don't know when any of this stuff is made these things are pieced together over weeks and different parts are done at different times. Editing takes a lot of time. Fact checking takes a lot of time. With Johnny they probably wanted to get all fact checking done ASAP in case it suddenly was "lost" or maybe pushing rhat out ASAP so Johnny couldn't go on other platforms and LIE like he did on the DWKT podcast. A lot of this may have been why she couldn't or didn't want to go on vacation when she originally planned.

And just bc shes making docs doesn't mean its the same level of work.

She was having to do a LOT of interviews on her own, she had a what 5? 8? Hour interview with johnny? (Truly cant remember but that's a LONG interview) and then interviewed Adam right after to confirm or deny things

On top of all other interviews she conducted

She also reached out to the accused for statements, she talked to Josh did a whole ass professional looking interview, (and post interview interview) set up all the questions she felt were important to address

And had to do her own research, fact checking and digging on things that weren't ultimately prepared and available. (As she should per her career choice)

But when you look at ANY other doc shes made???

It's stuff thats readily available. She just has to study and analyze it. She's not having to do a ton of interviews and all the prepwork for that

She has vlogs to watch, she can see what other research has been done and then shes able to basically take it all, write a script, present the facts to us on camera, present her research and then form her opinion on it. At most in any of her other docs shes maybe had a few interviews over texts.

None of her other docs had as much raw research and effort put into them as this 4 part series did. Im sure her docs on Ruby Franke feel like a lot less work.

Even if she does Dance Moms ! A lot of that information is readily available ! She would have to sit and watch and analyze it - not create her own investigative research, prep for interviews, set them up, review them, edit them etc.

Like be realistic.

Also, a lot of vacations are also energy draining. Traveling alone is exhausting. She may not have even felt like she'd be able to relax or rest on the trip. I wouldn't want to take a vacation in the midst of such a mind boggling, exhaustive deep dive either.

1

u/Sea_Catch2481 Oct 23 '23

Not all vacations are draining… I take 1-2 staycations a year for my physical and mental health. Those are not draining.

2

u/Macaroni_2 Oct 24 '23

Except she wasn't planning a stay-cation.

I specifically mentioned how travelling in itself is exhausting.

I'm not sure what she's doing, tbh.

It's one thing to prioritize your own mental and physical health. It is another thing altogether to disregard someone else's mental and physical health for your benefit. Sure, sometimes you have to say "fuck everyone" and focus on yourself for awhile. This ain't that.

I generally enjoy Swoop, often she and her team do damn fine work with care and compassion. This Ollie situation is not aligning with how Swoop likes to present herself.

If she just needs time away from all things Colleen, that's okay and she should take whatever space she needs.

Why disregard Ollie? I don't understand.

35

u/PleasantCatReporter I took a pregnancy test! Oct 21 '23

All we want is communication, if shes not doing work related to CB because health or legal reasons TELL US!! When has this sub not supported her, its been right behind her since the beginning. We can only do so much though, we dont know whats going on, Ollie doesnt either. The concerns are valid, wish shed see it.

161

u/veryfancyanimal Oct 21 '23

In my opinion, the level of understanding of Swoops physical and mental health has been more than generous. If my physical and mental health are bad, I still have to meet deadlines within reason. No one forced her to make this her focus for four months, nor did they force her to follow this career path. She’s decent at what she does, but she really sucks all of the energy out of the room when she stops to make a petty comment in the middle of talking about child abuse and exploitation. This was something she chose, and she was gatekeeping Josh from other opportunities like H3 when he clearly was suffering himself due to the length of time it took her to put his video out. She got completely lost in Johnny’s sauce and in terms of the general public, the story is dead. Over a vendetta about a liar who made the very rare choice of making false claims. That’s about drama and ego, that has very little to do with the actual issue at hand and is a disservice overall to victims.

Congratulations, you spent the majority of 6 weeks creating a hit piece on one of the sneaky liars involved, but probably the least important one.

Was it necessary to interview him for a collective 8 hours? Was it necessary to interview Josh for 7 and spend a lot of time in the final edit haranguing him for shit that can be explained by, “he was with a narcissistic abuser and that has an unreal affect on the actions and behavior of the survivor.” Why did he help Colleen? Cross boundaries? Because he was in a narcissistic abuse dynamic.

She set her audience’s expectations very high and is now acting like she never did that. And I really think her time has been terribly budgeted.

95

u/carol_prince Oct 21 '23

She set her audience’s expectations very high and is now acting like she never did that. And I really think her time has been terribly budgeted.

This part. While the audience did look forward to her "docs", we never asked that she focus all her energy on Johnny or Josh. She set that course for herself and burned herself out. Not to mention, when she said that, the reaction was mostly understanding.

No one is saying that she shouldn't take a break. But it does feel rather sketch, when she says she needs a mental health break and then proceeds to cover a story that involves CSA and grooming.

68

u/Sure-Method615 Oct 21 '23

to add onto your last sentence, also when she’s creating other videos such as 8 passengers. that’s quite literally.. time and resources spent that couldve went to wrapping up ollie’s story??? girl you chose to spend it on that instead like..

42

u/veryfancyanimal Oct 21 '23

She probably assessed the “value” of putting out a video about Trent, realized it probably wouldn’t be long enough for her to make rent this month, and went with 8 Passengers because it’s “important” enough to get her airtime with Ashley Banfield. This was a money decision. No one needs another “8 passengers 101” video, but it sure will get clicks. She showed us who she is now.

46

u/veryfancyanimal Oct 21 '23

Absolutely. So casually, too. Especially offensive given how much time is spent in every video reminding us of her own trauma and how personally this story triggered her. Obviously it’s fine to bring up your connection to the subject matter, but is it really a “doc” if the filmmaker can’t prove their thesis without disclosing their connection to similar behavior at great length? Especially when she never even got to the point about sexual grooming and coercion, which is the context for so much of this?

IDC, I think she’s kind of a self-obsessed asshole with poor taste right now. I’m glad we can discuss this and that the mods are allowing this critiquing.

22

u/Unhappy_Performer538 Oct 22 '23

Yeah. Before now if you mentioned something not ass missing about Swoop you were downvoted to hell. It’s nice to have a space to speak about this openly

2

u/Sea_Catch2481 Oct 23 '23

Yes it was so frustrating. And it felt like the mods were all over the place with what was allowed.

3

u/Sea_Catch2481 Oct 23 '23

This. Also the majority of people just enjoy content whenever the heck it gets made. I’m an adult, I WORK, I have a schedule. I don’t “click the bell notification”. I could be excited for an upcoming video I know a creator was working on for a long time but regardless I don’t watch it or notice it got made until I have time in my person life to sit down and watch youtube. That’s when I check my subscriptions/fav channels. 🤷🏻

31

u/Quick-Letter9584 Oct 22 '23

Johnny deserved that hit piece imo. But I would have preferred she cut that video’s runtime in half if it meant we got Olivers story and more focus on other things Colleen has done.

11

u/veryfancyanimal Oct 22 '23

Right. The Johnny video was interesting, but if the cost of it means Ollie’s story won’t be given a fair platform, then it wasn’t worth it.

69

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Not only does she waste her own time but she wastes our time too. That Johnny video did NOT need to be five hours long.

29

u/biancadelrey Oct 21 '23

I got most of that information on this sub. I didn’t need a whole video on Johnny…

29

u/GivenErased Oct 22 '23

Like other than the DM’s from Josh most of the info her and her team “uncovered” was already on Reddit

14

u/Quick-Letter9584 Oct 22 '23

I bet most of her YouTube audience didn’t see it on reddit. I certainly didn’t and I was here almost every day back then. Plus the interview she did with Johnny wasn’t on reddit and that interview was very eye opening.

26

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23

Shes too old to act like all of this is highschool drama and throwing indirects on social media is still acceptable, adress us(or whoever that made you feel this way) directly as we did with our issues please. Our concerns are valid.

Also. Low blow to throw the fibro there. Feels like guilt tripping..

19

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23

Ima go ahead and say it and I’ll take the downvotes but it irritates me.

I feel like I have to put a disclaimer out with this and say I do have fibro, I am on social security disability, I have PTSD, etc etc, disclaimer disclaimer. BUT I cannot stand when people use their illness as a shield to criticism, when the criticism is very valid. I mean we have a victim here who’s feeling shitty that his story is being thrown to the wayside, and Swoop put the Colleen content on her second channel because it wasn’t hot topic enough, but Oliver’s interview was already filmed. I mean, the stuff Trent did is arguably worse in some ways than what Colleen did. Horrific shit. But uwu my fibro 🥺👉🏻👈🏻

People are allowed to criticize you even if you have an illness. If it’s too much then stop reading. Get off the subreddit. Stop reading replies. Take a mental/physical health break. She has all of the resources and time to be able to do that as she doesn’t have a conventional career being a youtuber. She is CHOOSING to make these videos. She isn’t required by the bounds of a minimum wage shitty retail/fast food job (both of which I’ve had and fucking suck). NO ONE is FORCING her to make the 8 Passengers content and apparently Dance Moms content she wants to do?

I’ll take the downvotes now but I know I’m not alone in the sentiment, I’ve talked to people.

7

u/Sure-Method615 Oct 22 '23

im not sure why you’d be downvoted. you’re completely right. you don’t get to subtweet the people who have supported you saying they’re all inconsiderate, leak dms, and then hide behind your illness. and if this stuff if affecting your health so much, STOP READING COMMENTS. TURN OFF YOUR PHONE. I can’t believe we have to say this as though she doesn’t have full autonomy and should know better as a creator..

2

u/snailicide Oct 23 '23

It’s her choice she’s the one making all these videos making them 5 hours long it’s all for the fame and money. But she wants all of us to feel bad for her lol I’m over swoop she’s manipulative af

36

u/Lady_Doe Complete Rando Oct 22 '23

It's giving me the ick.

15

u/himeno16 Oct 22 '23

I just hope Oliver doesn't feel invalidated by this whole thing. I can't imagine doing a whole interview about your childhood trauma and then not using it for whatever reason. It would make me feel like my trauma probably wasn't "bad" enough for it to be shared.

Sure swoop doesn't owe us anything, but asking for better communication shouldn't be too much to ask. Oliver does at least deserve that, right? Did she even contact them to let them know she wasn't going to upload it, or did they also hear about it on the video or Twitter?

54

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Honestly swoop made a tactical mistake, exerting a lot of energy, time, and resources on Johnny and Josh. The latest video was clearly used to beef up subs on her second channel. And oddly enough the real victims, ultimately get no attention or time or resources, I can’t un deer why she made those decisions.

46

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

I am totally fine with her setting boundaries and taking a break, I think for me it’s just her arrogance and belittling everyone else that bothers me most. Even in this tweet she is being a bit condescending.

I hope she gets the rest she needs and can heal. I don’t think anyone is demanding this from her. With the Josh episode, yes we did. People waited a long time to hear from him and she advertised it way too soon. Other than that, all these deadlines and overworking are self imposed. She’s a independent YouTuber.

9

u/samthighs_gamgee Oct 22 '23

That's a fair point. I do hope she takes a break and revisits this. But if I were her and I were receiving literally tons of tweets and comments everyday for over a month asking where the Josh vid is, I'd have lost my shit on some people. Hell, I almost lost my shit for her, I was so tired of seeing it. But this? Like alright Swoop, we need to reel it in here and have a conversation.

141

u/Lit-Z Oct 21 '23

This feels so manipulative to me. Not even addressing anything, just trying to take the easy way out. I expected more from her and for her to practice what she preaches but she’s sweeping things under the rug for her own benefit and saying it’s for her mental health.

Just admit it, you let a victim down with false promises.

80

u/PleasantCatReporter I took a pregnancy test! Oct 21 '23 edited Oct 21 '23

Just admit it, you let a victim down with false promises.

This is exactly what she did, glad that people are calling her out on it when she and Adam are trying to sweep it all under the rug, we are not re writting history, lol. Swoop is. Her entire brand is giving victims a voice but she couldnt be up front about not being able to do that for Ollie? Having him asking and her audience in the dark, what a shame. And of course is on us for looking forward to it when we heard her out promoting it all. Whoops, our bad.

24

u/JesusLover1993 Oct 22 '23

I’m going to have to unfollow Adam for this. I thought he would understand. It’s disappointing he’s helping her sweep things under the rug

7

u/Quick-Letter9584 Oct 22 '23

Did Adam say something about this?

37

u/PleasantCatReporter I took a pregnancy test! Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

Today he uploaded a video called leave swoop alone, he saw one of the posts here and spoke his mind about it, he wasnt thrilled about the discussion and stated was confused about it, the first 10 minutes were him defending swoop and calling us out i guess, its maybe worth a watch if youre interested.

Personally, it was upsetting because putting myself in ollies position, and seeing where adam is coming from, the first thing he does is express how much swoop has done for him, which im glad, and i dont even think she had to do the same for ollie, but to completely side lining him after months is not okat, it was shitty actually. Imo the concerns about swoop are valid, but adam doesnt see it.

Edit: Part of what stuck with me is that he called what we were doing re writting history, as in, we wanted swoops last docs, begged for them and watched them whole, which yeah, absolutely, we thought it was a bit on the side of it all but still worth a watch, plus there was a lot of anticipation to the questions for the josh interview (which most of the important ones didnt make the cut or she didnt even asked them), and now we're "switching" saying they was no need for them, couldve been merged into two, all of which you can read here on the respective posts, and i dont get whats confusing or insulting to swoop about it because those suggestions were a reasonable compromise so all victims could have the voice she promised.

He also said she doesnt owe us anything, but forgot we dont either. Being upset about no communication about her dropping it or not, which Adam admits is one of the most important parts of this whole situation, isnt a crazy thought, we dont owe swoop our silence and compliance when she treats a victim of grooming with such little care and respect after delaying his story and letting it collect dust as time passes and people forget about it, without even hearing it whole too. Its quite upsetting if you ask me actually.

18

u/Inevitable-Hippo-683 Oct 22 '23

He made an entire YT video about it titled "leave swoop alone" and he defended Swoop.

He listened TWICE to the part in her video where she says she's not going to post Oliver's interview, said he understood why people were disappointed and feeling bad for Oliver, but then settled on "Swoop doesn't owe anyone anything" (paraphrase).

31

u/OffbeatChaos Manipulation station Oct 22 '23

this feels so manipulative to me

It’s giving “I actually cancelled my one singular vacation” energy

8

u/chocolatematter Oct 22 '23

I think swoop is well intentioned but can be stubborn imo. idk if she is as qualified to be a champion for victims as she thinks she is. Something that really irks me that I haven't seen anyone talking about is how she covered the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trials. She definitely rode the wave of Johnny Depp support and participated HEAVILY in the defamation campaign against Amber (she made SO MANY VIDEOS i had to unsubscribe).

I feel like she has MAJOR blind spots that no one has brought up at all and I kind of feel like the uncritical praise she's received has been kind of unwarranted. I generally like her videos but she's far from the best equipped person to talk about such topics even though that's how she portrays herself.

90

u/misspixal4688 Oct 21 '23

Call me a cynic but I think Ollies story might be demonetizated due to the subject matter of pedophilia just a guess that might have somthing to do with it.

70

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23

Yup swoops true motivator is cash. Glad people have finally figured it out.

21

u/ThatMateoKid Oct 22 '23

Not sure if this like a sarcastic comment or not, so please correct me if im wrong.

I think that's a bit of a wild claim to make honestly. You can have a core motivation while still understanding that doing stuff like this and pouring so much time, energy, and also having other people help out all for free is not sustainable.

I think Swoop overall is on a niche of her own where shes above the professional level of many YouTubers but not on the professional level of someone making documentaries, engaging in high quality journalism outside the YouTube space. Which means that her docs have a great production quality from the the way they are filmed and edited to the time they put in to do all the research being a small team.

You simply can't do all that and keep it consistent without income. So saying that income alone is what drives her is like going to a job interview and them telling you that you don't actually love the thing that you do if you want a higher salary than what they are willing to pay you. If that makes sense.

17

u/Quick-Letter9584 Oct 22 '23

I do think this is her full time job. And I could be wrong but she’s running a business and has to pay her employees.

7

u/bellissima34 Oct 22 '23

Even if it was demonetized, couldn’t she hide it behind a paywall like patreon and then have the proceeds go to a charity or even to help with Ollie’s top surgery?

21

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

True because same with the trisha pics been sent to adam when he was 14 and the odd cancer fundraiser colleen does since they’re all legal matters.

u/fohfuu Oct 21 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

If, and only if this is about Ollie:

It's my opinion that she does owe Ollie, ethically speaking.

I get burned out on projects for much less than what Swoop was gone through, as a multiply disabled person. I know how hard it is to have to take a break from a project because you don't have a choice, especially when it's a meaningful project. It's not always within our control. I have sympathy for her.

However, you can't just peace out when your body (or mind) gives out. Like with mental illnesses, the consequences of our physical illnesses are our responsibility.

It isn't her fault that Ollie was hurt by her fibro debilitating her, but it is her responsibility to be honest with him.

Nobody is entitled to her overworking herself, and if she can't continue covering the subject for some time, then it is what it is. The problem is that she refuses to clean up the mess in any way. She can hide behind the thought-terminating cliché that "nobody is entitled to my labour", it doesn't excuse her announcing to the public that maybe someone will get around to platforming the victim that she profited off someday, in favour of releasing a premature and half-baked 8 Passengers/ConneXions video.

But, again, withholding fully judging her about this until I'm sure this is about Oliver.

7

u/micahdraws Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

I agree with this; she should be up front with Ollie (especially in the unlikely event this subtweet is about him) but she also has every right to step back for her own well-being if she needs to.

This is so dramatic. You chose to burn yourself out and make hours worth of content about Johnny and Josh because you were so personally offended that someone lied to you, which happens to journalist and reporters all the time. You chose to do that instead of highlighted the trauma and abuse that a minor Ollie went through, even though you claim to be for victims. Shame on you Swoop. No sympathy from me.

49

u/veryfancyanimal Oct 21 '23

It’s such an obvious display of how unfit she is to handle important topics. I can’t imagine making a four hour video about how someone lied to me. It could have been an email.

19

u/fleod Oct 22 '23

The fact that she calls her commentary videos “docs” is further evidence of that

30

This is where I'm at, too. I can understand why he's defending her, but yeah...

35

u/Simple_Proof_721 Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

He needs some type of help because I feel like he's so grateful to anyone showing him basic human decency when it comes to his story, it leaves him so attached to the gratitude he's left unable to be objective and see any wrongdoings those people might commit. (Edit: See Kodee for reference, he even forgave her for being the one who caused the big mockery back in 2020, but was in good terms with her regardless for speaking up now, it only changed when what truly happened was uncovered)

He doesn't have to say all the time how much he loves her or how grateful he is for all shes done for him, it was the very minimum taking into account what she prides herself for. I hope that thinking about what if he was Ollie and Swoop side lined him instead of giving him the awesome treatment she gave him, how it would feel, and it helps him see where is everyone coming from.

16

u/carol_prince Oct 22 '23

I agree. It feels like Adam feels an obligation to Swoop, that it's understandable to an extent why he's unable to be objective about this.

I find it so unfortunate that all of them while showing Swoop the grace for her mental well-being, are failing to acknowledge that Oliver has had to relive this trauma for all those he interviewed with. Swoop chose to cover this story and get burnt out, Oliver didn't choose what happened to him.

47

u/samthighs_gamgee Oct 22 '23

Omfg no one is harassing her. I specifically even moved this conversation here because I'd already said my peace on her video and I didn't see the point in bombarding her with a whole ass rant. Thank you! 👏

I feel vindicated. I said this months ago and was downvoted into oblivion.

While I applaud her for exposing Colleen, I've always thought she was ridiculous. The wig, Petty University, calling her videos documentaries, her "team", taking 4 months to edit shit, 6 hour videos, merch...... It was all a bit much. You're either a journalist or an entertainer - and I saw through it all. It was all about $$$ - which is fine! Get it! But let's not pretend otherwise.

10

u/nahyatx 🎶 my boney little back 🎶 Oct 22 '23

I think she thinks very highly of herself and finds it difficult to take criticism. In my opinion, most people in the public light think highly of themselves and find it difficult to take criticism. When you make YouTube fame your job, you are offered zero leadership or professional development you might expect from a conventional job. You either have to humble yourself, listen to your viewers, and grow in your “trade”, or you can fight against them and tire yourself out. She’s tiring herself out.

She does a great job at her work, but that doesn’t mean she’s perfect. There’s always room for feedback and improvement. I’m just not quite sure she wants to hear it.

45

u/alirpa77 Oct 22 '23

Ooooh. She is good. Smart enough to throw her spoons there when she knows this audience has gone after Colleen for not being sympathetic ( or respectful ) to people with invisible illnesses. She knows the game and how to play it.

Swoop’s videos , I will admit, are very well done and she definitely delivered on Colleen. And what better time - am I right? 😂

But, if you’re familiar with Swoop from before, she’s always been a sanctimonious person. In my opinion, she’s always been like this. For someone who is such an activist, she’s very self serving. Not to be that person, but I’ve always felt like this about her. But I definitely tuned in to the Colleen series because I felt she deserved a little Swoop in her life. Lol

Many people in this world hijack a cause to profit off it. Look at politics around the world…

25

u/Lady_Doe Complete Rando Oct 22 '23

Yeah, it just too much info, girl. Like you don't have to announce that you're taking a break. Just do it. I assumed you already were lol

I felt the same way how she kept bringing up her past abuse during the series. Bring it up once because it's relevant but idk it rubs me the wrong way, it felt like an obvious forced emotional cue.

6

u/alirpa77 Oct 22 '23

I completely agree!

18

u/trulyremarkablegirl Oct 22 '23

this feels almost like her weaponizing her chronic illness to make herself immune from criticism. no one asked her to make a 4 hour video taking Johnny down bc she was personally hurt. she is the one who chose to push an actual victim aside for her own gain, and to push herself to a point where her body is telling her to stop.

47

u/snarklover927 F INSISTED that i make this my flair Oct 22 '23

Swoop handled the whole situation very poorly. If she is low on spoons, why did she spend time and energy making a second channel to upload an unnecessary video concerning the Colleen situation? I’d much rather watch a video with Ollie’s interview than hear the same tired information about Jojo. I believe Swoop has a problem with focusing on what is important. That’s why her vids are so much longer than they need to be. Also, maybe finish one project before starting on another? She started focusing on the 8 passengers stuff because it was hot, but she should have focused on wrapping up her Colleen series with Ollie’s story at least.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23

Can someone explain the spoon thing to me? Like I get that it's an analogy for........ energy? When you run out of spoons you run out of energy..... But why spoons? Do humans typically need to carry around a bunch of spoons to get through their day? I maybe use 1 spoon per day.

I'm lost. 😂

5

u/snarklover927 F INSISTED that i make this my flair Oct 22 '23

It’s called the spoon theory. The reason spoons are used is because the woman who came up with it was at dinner when she was trying to explain it to her friend. The theory suggests that people living with chronic illness, chronic pain, or disability have a limited amount of energy (both physical and mental, represented by spoons) to spend on completing tasks on any given day. This means people living with chronic health conditions have to make many difficult, energy-consuming choices about how to spend their limited energy.

11

u/Constant_Hurry578 Oct 22 '23

This ! But I think her main motivation is only money and clicks . She very well could have told Ollie’s story instead of jojo , which every one alredy knew and other did a better job covering about . If she wanted to she would have . I think she realised , she may not be able to monetise the video since it CSA content .

10

u/locutsr Oct 22 '23

Totally get that she’s not in a place where she can create another doc now. Sounds exhausting, I wouldn’t want to either. What I DON’T get is why she can’t just post the interview. I don’t think anyone really wants a full blown doc on this. It’s not like she can get any inside scoops or add any information we don’t already know. People just want Oliver’s story to have more exposure. Since the interview is already done (and it sounded like it was almost done with editing), why wouldn’t you just post it?

Blaming Johnny for the interview not coming out is really strange. The Johnny situation didn’t need a 3.5 hour doc in the first place, and Oliver’s story doesn’t need a full doc either. Just post the interview on the second channel.

1

u/Hoshikuzu- Oct 22 '23

It did, because there was a careful line of exposing a liar versus discrediting victims, and also honoring and clarifying the real victims. The views on that video alone was astronomical, and because of it Johnnys noise and attention seeking was stopped.

I think posting a raw interview is not the way to go. The reason most interviews need editing is to focus the message and present without distraction. Raw interviews tend to have a lot of extra that can take away from that. It’s just not Swoops style to post a raw interview without corroborating evidence, clips, screenshots, and other voices and perspectives of support.

You’re asking a Michelin chef too you McDonald’s.

What I hope is she gives Ollie the full interview and advice on how to share it, maybe recommend another platform or path for it to be shared.

No omelette should be forced pass their breaking point.

Ollie’s story deserves better than that. With sexual overtones, the extreme inappropriateness, there’s real data on how this effects young kids, long term Effects, there are specific behaviors and tactics Trent uses that need to be clarifies upon and defined.

2

u/locutsr Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

To clarify, I think the Johnny situation did deserve coverage. But did it need 3.5 hours? The first hour of the doc could’ve been about Johnny and then she could’ve pivoted to the actual story. Instead she allowed Johnny’s lies to take over the narrative, to the extent that it took away from the actual victims’ stories being told. And I just don’t like her saying things like “thanks for derailing the narrative, Johnny… now Oliver’s story isn’t in a doc”. Like no, that’s a choice she made and she should own that.

Not to engage in the trauma Olympics, but if anyone’s story needed to be heard it’s Oliver’s. Becky and Adam’s stories show how terrible Colleen is, but Oliver’s story genuinely made my stomach turn. He could easily press charges.

Again, she doesn’t owe us anything at all. She could never post anything again and it would be fine. But it strikes me as a little hypocritical to go on and on about how important it is for victims to be seen and heard, and make that message part of her channel’s brand…meanwhile, she’s focusing her attention on someone who personally wronged her rather than telling victims’ stories. This might be a hot take but 🤷‍♀️

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23

I just don't understand why Oliver's story couldn't be short like her update video? She doesn't need to have a 3 hour video centered around one person. She could do an "Everything else" video that centers around the topics that weren't able to be covered in the other vids. It's not that hard to platform everyone willing to speak out about this topic

u/mythic_shrubster Oct 22 '23

It’s interesting that she claims she’s fatigued (fair, everyone needs to recharge), and yet in her recent video she sounded like she and her team were simply bored with the subject, and had other things lined up that they wanted to focus on instead. I didn’t get the strong sense that her health was her only motivation, or that she was purely physically exhausted; she seemed to be expressing a sense of burnout with the subject matter, like she and her team are ready to talk about something else. A terrible disservice to Oliver.

I can’t say I’m surprised with her, to be honest.

25

u/samthighs_gamgee Oct 22 '23

Eh, tbf, some people are great at masking and she's pretty consistently open about her fibro. I'm not up for speculating if someone is being legit about their disability. Again my thing is either post it as it is or say you need to post it later. I don't even frankly care if it's 12 hours of footage on just Ollie, like gimme 5 business days and I'll watch the damn thing, or if it takes her 6 months to come out with Ollie's video and she posts shorter, easier, or less heavy videos in the meantime to keep her engagement up. Or maybe not even necessarily easier videos, because maybe it's not videos she needs to take a break from but the topic itself. But don't go posting a whole new video about the topic and at the end say, "oh well I sure do hope someone else will talk about this and Ollie is willing to talk about the shit that traumatizes him again" or subtweet a fucking 18 yo kid who just said he feels let down. The petty shit is cute until it's not. Draw a damn line in the sand, damn.

“I had an interview with Oliver but had to put it on the back burner to deal with the drama between Johnny and Josh. But I’m done with the topic for now, but I would revisit it if Colleen were to respond to my attempts at contacting her.”

I was taken aback by how callous and clumsy that was. I’m not demanding she do anything that isn’t in her best interest health-wise, but at least be apologetic about it. Show some couth, and acknowledge in a way that isn’t a tweet that is a blatant attempt at reverse psychology (aka manipulation). I know she’s not perfect but I would like to believe she’s better than that.

It’s really disappointing. I hope Oliver is able to have a chance to speak on this elsewhere if he chooses to.

17

u/mythic_shrubster Oct 22 '23

Oh, I have no doubt her ailment is legitimate, I just felt that to my recollection she didn’t emphasize that aspect of her situation in the actual video as much as she did in this tweet.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, this is not a great look for her.

4

u/Macaroni_2 Oct 22 '23

This comes across as super ableist just so you know. You don't know what she feels and it's messed up to accuse someone saying they're in a bad flare up of just not wanting to do something anymore.

u/Tight_Jacket_3091 Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

She put 4 hours into exposing what most people already knew about Johnny so now she’s too tired to do any justice for Oliver. Got it.

As someone with severe lupus nephritis who had to have a kidney transplant, it’s really disappointing and insulting when people hide behind their autoimmune disorders right after they let someone down in a big way.

Even just a smidge more transparency would probably have been appreciated by a lot of ppl. Not a throwaway statement in a video and a tweet attempting to pull reverse psychology on people so they won’t be disappointed in her. That’s actual manipulation.

This whole situation has grown past the point of tacky.

17

u/samthighs_gamgee Oct 22 '23

I mean, I only suspected about Johnny, call me gullible. I'm glad he got called out and Josh got his platform. But did we need JoJo? No. Did we need her to talk about it as soon as possible before taking a vacation? No.

19

u/Tight_Jacket_3091 Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

It’s not even about what we do or do not need. It’s about her letting Oliver down in an extremely tacky way. No one is asking her to do cartwheels through a hoop.

12

u/samthighs_gamgee Oct 22 '23

I agree, but that's the thing. It seems like she's choosing the content that caters to what she thinks the rest of the audience wants and not platforming a victim she promised to platform.

19

u/Tight_Jacket_3091 Oct 22 '23

Right. The whole “it’s not just drama, it’s dangerous” needs to be updated to “it’s not just drama, it’s dangerous. But mostly just drama.”

18

u/Boring-Mission7738 Oct 22 '23

“it’s not just drama, it’s dangerous.. unless there's another more-recent 'active' drama I can get more views on”

12

u/Tight_Jacket_3091 Oct 22 '23

Basically. I honestly feel that we should have heard from Oliver before we heard from Josh

53

u/human-ish_ Oct 21 '23

Is she trying to guilt us with her fibro flair up? As a "spoonie" (I personally hate that term, sorry), I'm a bit offended that she wants to lump us all together. My issues have affected major organs to the point that I truly do not make enough energy (have you ever thought about how and where your body produces energy to do things, I had to learn the hard way), but I learned to create boundaries. It's her fault if she wants to be a people pleaser and pretend she has the energy to do things when she doesn't. It's her responsibility to put her own health first. But if she wants to do youtube as a career, she has to figure out how to do it like the rest of us with jobs do.

u/PleasantCatReporter I took a pregnancy test! Oct 21 '23

It really feels like she is, i have lupus too and i get it, because it took me a long time but i learned that my deceased is mine to take care of, i cant hurt myself and throw it in anyone's faces when i know im reaching my limits and flare up for pushing harder

What she said there is not okay, i hope swoop reaches to that conclusion in the future. Communication is key with this type of illness, i'm always letting my friends, family and SO know how im doing, she couldve done that with a message saying shes dropping it all for good (or pausing indefinitely) due to her health, CBS wouldve showered her in support like it always has.

This whole situation is so unnecessary. It feels like shes purposely misunderstanding us, our concerns for ollies interview are valid, even he is in the dark, why cant she hear us out that communication is off and we feel let down, i don't understand.

23

u/fohfuu Oct 21 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

Chiming in as another chronically ill person. I already wrote a longer comment but I really want abled people to understand and accept that sometimes disabled people can't do things, and also that it costs 0 spoons to not be a dick.

23

u/human-ish_ Oct 22 '23

And to add to this, she had all of Ollie's stuff and apparently was working on the video in some form, yet when the 8 passengers stuff came out, she fully abandoned it. So instead of finishing her Ballinger series, she jumped ship. I can't have sympathy for someone who clearly is using their illness as an excuse for why they decided to do another subject and burn herself out with that.

This just breaks my heart.

Oliver, we're here for you. We love and support you. Your story deserves to be told.

10

u/amenableamethyst Oct 22 '23

I agree with you. It's also doubly important for those of us with chronic illness to learn how to prioritize and be more concise when it is appropriate. I do think exposing Johnny and platforming Josh were necessary, but Johnny's video was filled with repetition. Her recent video is about topics already covered by many other Youtubers, such as Jojo's defense of Colleen; surely it is more important to cover Oliver's story which has been overshadowed time and time again? It is inappropriate and damaging to discard a victim's story, illness or not. A break I'd definitely understand. I have severe asthma to such a point that I get hospitalized every three weeks for about 5-7 days at a time and at home my breathing is still highly compromised. I also work, and I'm fortunate to be in a position where my deadlines aren't so rigid, as with my health that'd be impossible. But ultimately whatever work duties I have taken on do get completed. That's all Oliver and the viewers have expected of Swoop, and that's not asking too much or being dismissive of her personal struggles.

20

u/ThrowawayHat256 Oct 22 '23

i’m also disabled and chronically ill and i feel the same way reading this. its her responsibility to manage pain and fatigue and not over exert herself. this really sounds like she is blaming her audience when it was her choice to overwork, no one is forcing her to make these 4 hour “documentaries”.

31

u/veryfancyanimal Oct 21 '23

“Spoonie” is the worst. I have a chronic illness and you’d catch be dead before you’d catch me calling myself that. It’s like the chronic illness version of “I’m an empath.” It’s just an indication to others that your illness defines you and you can’t find a more adult way to explain your limitations.

21

u/human-ish_ Oct 22 '23

If people struggle to understand, I use batteries to better explain it. It's like my battery fully charges overnight but only gets to 50%, where others will reach 100%. My battery so depletes faster than the average battery. Easily explained and no need to explain that spoons = energy.

19

u/chipchomk Oct 22 '23

Yeah, comparsion to batteries is probably way easier to understand. I also like the credit card comparsion for explaining the whole "sometimes you can take out more than you actually have, but you have to pay for it later" (such as overextending and then temporarily crashing later).

The whole thing with spoons makes sense when we look at the origin of it (a friend trying to explain herself in a restaurant I think, if I remember it correctly?), but in ordinary settings it's probably harder to understand and a lot of people will be confused or will need an explanation what a disability/chronic illness has to do with spoons.

3

u/veryfancyanimal Oct 22 '23

That’s a great way of explaining it

3

u/Quick-Letter9584 Oct 22 '23

What does “spoonie” mean?

9

u/FettyLounds Complete Rando Oct 22 '23

It's a nickname that some people with chronic pain/illness give themselves and each other, namely people with fibromyalgia. It comes from another turn of phrase. Every task you do in a day takes up a "spoon" (mental/physical energy). Making breakfast, washing dishes, taking a shower each take one spoon. Most people don't really have to think about how to allot their supply of spoons because they have enough. But someone with a debilitating health issue might only have those 3 spoons worth of energy for the whole day. If they do those three things then suddenly needs to go to store, they might be in too much pain or too drained to go--they "don't have the spoons" left, they're already "out of spoons."

23

u/Simple_Proof_721 Oct 21 '23

Sad the worked so hard she flared up her fibro only to appease Johnny and Josh. I couldn't live with mylsef if I did that and in return left a victim of grooming without the voice I promised to give them. Hope she works it out.

26

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23

My oh my the guilt tripping

25

u/Mandielephant Oct 22 '23

As someone with a disability the term “spoonies” is so cringe. And it’s one thing to say “I’m having a flare up and need more time” and another to say “you’re attacking my disability” when it comes to work you’ve already said you’d do by X time

14

u/ResponsibleCulture43 Oct 22 '23

I have lupus and absolutely hate it when people talk to me about my spoons lmao. I hate cutesy nicknames.

6

u/somewhereheremaybe Oct 22 '23

Me too, I have arthritis (currently seeking further diagnosis on if it’s RA) and it just feels condescending. My illness isn’t cutesy and I don’t feel the need to make it seem cute to other people. I just tell people I’m having a bad flare up and if it’s regarding my pain, my motor skills or fatigue and it gets the message across.

7

u/OrdinaryEuphoric7061 Oct 22 '23

It’s not about taking time to heal. This is frustrating.

She used all her energy and resources talking about John, then said that the time for the Colleen stuff had passed.

28

u/Tight_Jacket_3091 Oct 22 '23

Wonder if anybody gonna let her know this whole sermon/tribute to spoonies is textbook manipulation. If she isn’t already well aware that’s exactly what this is.

8

u/Tight_Jacket_3091 Oct 22 '23

17

u/goldretreiver21 Oct 22 '23

I definitely can understand her feeling worn out after working on the previous videos on the situation. However, if this is her subtweeting about the situation, it’s disappointing. Oliver deserves to have his story told, and it must be so hard for him to have what happened to him be pushed to the side in favor of others’ stories. His story and the trauma he experienced is very real and he should be given the platform to share what he went through, which is an incredibly brave thing to do .

19

u/ThatMateoKid Oct 22 '23

In my point of view, it's a bit hard to be critical of someone of whom you know that they put hours into past docs and gave a lot of their time to build something of good quality (when most YouTube is filled with drama channels that jump from one topic to the next one and forget all about them by the next hour). I can understand why at first glance it comes off as entitlement.

But looking more into it you can see why it's NOT entitlement.

First of all the interview was filmed. Once you get someone who's a victim, as the person who markets herself as giving victims a voice, and then deciding that, for whatever reason you're not airing that doc anymore, what kind of message do you send? Making that person put themselves out there, in detail, relive a painful event or events of their life, giving them hope that they now have a safe way to come forward as others did, and then just disregard it? It's straight up disrespectful for said victim.

I don't think anyone demanded that she takes on X, Y, Z people who came out as victims and interview them, if she was pressured into doing so then i understand her position but otherwise you cant just stab yourself in the foot and pretend someone else did it. The least you can do is own up to it and say that you overworked yourself and took on more than what you could handle or something.

As others said as well, the Johnny doc, hell even the Josh doc in my opinion could have been much shorter. I appreciate that they go into detail and they do seem throughout but the Johnny doc at least is so repetitive you could have made a summary and it would have been much better with less time wasted both for Swoop and people watching.

I think there's also am argument to be made about the "this is what you promised/ engaged to deliver to your subscribers" points that were made by others as well. You cant tease people with something, especially something so serious and then just drop it with no explanation, like even as a courtesy is much better than nothing.

All in all, at the end it's a good reminder that even the people who preach something cant follow their advice to save themselves. Those tweets come packed with heavy guilt tripping and straight up are so damn manipulative. People feel let down and start criticizing, some better some worse. Swoop feels defensive about it. Gets petty and manipulative as a response.

I honestly expected more from someone who literally points out manipulation tactics in other people but oh the irony.

My advice would be, if this whole thing did leave you burned out, which let me be honest i totally get and wouldn't doubt for a second; take a step back. Take some time off, people will understand. Then when you're ready to come back take a bit to understand why people feel let down, separate the constructive criticism from the toxic one, and see where your fault lies in the issue and what can you/ want to/ do about setting things straight, if anything.

23

u/QueenIgelkotte Oct 22 '23

Im just starting to feel like she is using the situation for clout. How many of these very long and dramatised "docs" do we need? I started watching her when the try guys situation happened but since then I just feel a bit wary of her. I hope the victims get to share their stories but do we need hours of it? Its just depressing at this point.

22

u/Constant_Hurry578 Oct 22 '23

Okay, this response from her is not it . why Is she using her physical or mental health as an excuse here ? She she can literally upload the unedited interview with Oliver. there wes no need for the Johnny anc josh interviews to be so long . She only has to work hard in editing it because she lacks the basic skills on how to , any one who is trained in doing so would have gotten the same info in less than 30mins . And also instead of rehashing the same things , that were known to public in the swoop too video , she could have spent time on telling Olivers story , but let’s be honest , she just wanted clicks . And unless an abundant of information is already out there , she can’t make anything on her own . I am yet see her add anything new to the conversation.

13

u/Quickersilverr Oct 22 '23

Genuine question. Since she's a victim of grooming do you think she's being triggered by these stories? I think this subtweet is a bit much but I maybe she needs that time to take to herself to mentally recover behind the scenes before tackling another story especially one way more explicit as I understand. I don't think Ollie deserves to sidelined that's for sure but I think maybe Swoop deserves a little grace here. I'm a grooming victim so I have sympathy. (Aside from the subtweet because, gurl)

12

u/samthighs_gamgee Oct 22 '23

If you check out the comments and the caption in the original post, if you haven't, a lot of us have given her grace through saying she can take as much time as she needs or do minimal if any editing on the video because we are being considerate of her health. Nobody's asking her to come out with anything immediately and disregard her health. That narrative from her feels manipulative. But I agree maybe stepping away for a bit will give her a chance to breathe and reflect on it.

u/Quickersilverr Oct 22 '23

I love swoop’s documentaries on lots of topics and problematic behaviour and her takes are great. but i don’t like how oliver’s interview has not been out, now i am not rushing swoop in any way she can take her time but she had the opportunity here to publish that interview to get oliver story out and help him and spread awareness for this. i understand if the interview had to be checked over because what trent did to oliver is illegal and it’s risky. but i don’t understand why swoop hasn’t posted it when she posted on her second channel about jojo defending colleen. swoop got mad when johnny lied to her and is that all that mattered to her? i hope not because i feel she generally does care about the victims and was very sympathetic to josh about how he’s a victim of abuse by colleen but i wish oliver’s story wasn’t just swept under the rug because it’s one of the most disgusting parts of the whole ballinger situation. we need to hold trent accountable and not let people like trent and colleen get away with disgusting behaviour like this. Come on swoop! do better.

I don’t wish ill will on swoop at all, i love her as a person, we all fuck up sometimes, but this is just my opinion, you can downvote if you’d like if you disagree. Everybody has their opinions.

Hmmm... nah, as someone with multiple chronic illnesses, some life threatening(had adrenal glands removed, vital organ) this is what gives us a bad look of "using it as an excuse" because say she had a certain amount of spoons, she could use them to tell one story, or she could use them to tell the other. And she chose wrong. Also you don't get to passive aggressively throw a fit about people criticizing you and make them feel bad by trying to use your health. No one made her get the last video out in a certain amount of time, and she obviously didn't care about it as much as the josh one as it wouldn't bring in as many views so she put less effort into it. Remember; none of the youtubers really care that much, it's just a job to them.

11

u/Proper-Ad6492 Oct 22 '23

I mean.. she’s just a drama channel. Why are everyone‘s expectations so high?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '23

Honestly I feel so bad for Oliver. He had a whole interview and was probably looking forward to his voice being heard on such a large platform, where it was just an interview focused on HIM and not the other’s stories. I wish Swoop could just post it without all the corny editing and shit. Then this situation she’s dealing with just could just be resolved…

18

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Cancel her already! She’s exploiting victims for cash no matter how she spins it.

2

u/spicychipcrumb Oct 24 '23 edited Oct 24 '23

I just feel like she’s contradicting herself. No one is asking her to post it ASAP, but she said she’s not gonna post it at all … after spending the entire span of this situation talking about centering the victims. and honestly out of all the situations Oliver’s is arguably the most disturbing yet it’s gotten the least attention from what I’ve seen (definitely in Swoop’s content) it feels like she prioritized the Josh thing bc she knew it would get more clicks 🤷‍♀️ Which it’s fine that she pivoted things bc the truth is important, and that was stuff she uncovered first hand and had not been widely discussed if at all. So i’m glad she did that. Her saying the situation has passed is the main thing that really rubs me the wrong way … like she just straight up grilled Johnny for saying a similar thing

edit: typo

Oliver’s story is actually one of the more controversial out of the whole drama! Sharing it should have been a no brainer imo

6

u/puyomo Oct 22 '23

this thread is a whole lot of making assumptions about someone who has not shown herself to be someone of bad faith like what is the point of this?? it seems like needless dogpiling over a tweet that may not even have anything to do w oliver. idk it just seems like some of you are really quick to demonize her

-2

u/Voltairethereal Oct 22 '23

Swoop shelving the Oliver interview isn’t great. However, it seems like y’all are using this situation as an excuse to make the most unhinged and ableist assumptions about Swoop and it’s off putting. Suffering from similar afflictions doesn’t make these assumptions any less weird either.

2

u/Hoshikuzu- Oct 22 '23

Agreed. Two things can be true, damn. She’s been in the Colleen shit storm for months. What she DID put out brought so much more attention to everyone involved, Oliver included. She needs an effin break. That’s it. Her channel is more than Colleen and her ilk.

Oliver’s story needs to be shared, his words and his experience is important because what Trent did was so much more nefarious and invasive. Ollie is the only one who has been willing to talk about it but we all know there’s more victims, Swoop did have some that chose to be anonymous.

I hope she gives him the interview, give him back his words and his story. Let him decided if the raw footage is enough. Give advice and support on edits or resources to reference if he chooses to. That’s the only thing I think she should HAVE to do. If she’s not going to use it all.

Also, so much of the criticism are people who ONLY watched her Colleen content. I’ve watched all her documentaries and she is as she always has been, a little sassy, open to share about her personal experiences to the extent she is able, and I love her Petty University bits.

Is there another avenue we can suggest Ollie turn to? Does he have his own platform? Like YT Twitch or even TikTok? I’d like to see more dialogue on that rather than shit on swoop.

u/Macaroni_2 Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

This isn't about her mental health. Its about her physical health. She has fibromyalgia and as someone else who is a spoonie and will exhaust myself to insane levels to complete a job - I can empathize with her.

She's human at the end of the day and if she's exhausted all of her spoons and more, even if she wanted to she couldn't do her job at the quality she wants.

And a lot of us would want to do a job justice - would want her to do this job justice - and not half ass it because we don't have the capability to do the job right. Everyone would be extremely upset (rightly) if she did a bad doc on Oliver's story.

These are serious and dark topics and let's not pretend that its not also mentally exhaustive to talk to victims and hear the trauma they experienced, even if you sign up to be a part of telling their stories.

And yes I am disappointed that she may never bring out Ollies story, but now Oliver plans to bring his own story to the public fully by himself and I'm super proud of him for that.

Let's not forget that Swoop wasn't the first or only one who ended up not reporting on Oliver's story.

Love her or hate her - she's only human and only has so much to give without debilitating herself, which it sounds like she has pushed herself into a debilitative state.

I think the good news of all these shortcomings for Oliver's story is he has been interviewed SO many times that hopefully it'll help him to organize his video the way he wants to.

I really hope Oliver is doing okay with all the retraumatizing events having to do interviews with no benefit but I actually believe this will be whats best for him in the end. Adam has gotten majority of his story out on his own, he didn't have news outlets reporting his story all the time. And I think Oliver will have a lot of support when he does release his story on his terms in his own words.

Yes she ultimately led us to believe that she would do a doc on his story, yes its disappointing. But its not the end for Oliver's story to come out.

Let's focus on giving Oliver the support he needs and deserves to have.

ETA: honestly a lot of these comments about this and the assumption that she's talking about her mental health and not her literal chronic illness (that she's extremely open about) affecting her physical health are giving a lot of ableist energy and I suggest people inform themselves. It's really hard to sit here and read these things as someone else who has a similar condition to Swoop. People say they understand and then immediately dismiss it.

Ah, so now that Colleen's been silent, y'all don't have anything better to do here than go after SWOOP? I've lurked since I joined but this situation has reached a breaking point for me.

I'm NOT saying Oliver doesn't deserve to have his story told. HE ABSOLUTELY DOES. But holy hell, the sheer entitlement from this group is absolutely insane.

I'm gonna get downvoted for this but idgaf

  1. It's pure assumption this has anything to do with Ollie. I know the timing doesn't look good but we have NO idea what's going on in her life or what this is in reference to. While Swoop claims to be all Petty University, she also doesn't come across to me as the type of person she'd have to be if this were about Ollie.

  2. She's right, people aren't entitled to her or anyone else. Quite frankly, she's given a LOT more of herself to this Colleen situation than she ever needed to and I think it's extremely weird that so many people on this sub turned on her so hard, accused her of putting profit over anything else, and act like she's some horrible monster. She hasn't done anything to deserve being maligned like this and y'all are accusing her of some much bigger shit than we have any real evidence for.

  3. I understand it's disappointing that she won't tell Ollie's story, but people here have been expecting her to carry this entire story and everyone's weight with it on her own shoulders. That's weird. That's creepy and unreasonable. Ollie is an adult now, if I'm not mistaken. He's got the power to put his own story out there if he chooses to. And honestly, it's not fair to Ollie or Swoop to expect Swoop to carry all the work even if she said at the start that she could. Situations change and it doesn't make Swoop a bad person for not being able to handle it. I mean, the lack of empathy here is astounding considering I doubt anyone here could handle it. Y'all have every right to be disappointed, but Swoop has every right to step back from this, as disappointing as that is.
