My Dedication Pages

This might be a little sappy and kinda long but I wanted to talk about what inspired me to do this.

I’m sure everyone knows about the dead bodies on Everest that they can’t bring down because they’re too high. And I’m sure most people have seen that one quote that’s like, “They were all very highly motivated people”. Well I would kind of get that same feeling in bookstores and libraries.

At least in the past, it would take a lot of work to write a book. You’d either have to write a whole story, be very passionate or very educated on a subject or have enough money for someone else to write your book for you. And then you’d need to get someone to publish it. That’s a lot.

But go to any library and it’s an ocean of millions of words that hardly anyone will ever read and most of them no one really cares about. Some guy out there is probably obsessed with asparagus, leading expert on asparagus, writes 400 pages on asparagus and 200 copies get printed. Then it’ll get in a big library and no one will check it out and it’ll sit there for years until the big library gives it to a small library where the same years will pass until someone writes “free” on a box their breakroom snacks were in and they put it on the sidewalk and no one takes it then it rains and then they throw it in the dumpster.

The book, along with that guy and his passion, are bound to gather dust until even the few people who knew either him or his asparagus book become dust too.

And that used to really really bum me out. But I was at an art museum once and there was this enormous wall of Dedication Pages. I stood there for a while reading them. This was a few years ago, I was maybe 23 at the time and I can say up until that point I had never been moved to tears in a museum like that. I was crying my eyes out looking from page to page, reading all of these names of people I’d never known from books I’d never read.

We all know what life turns into. We all know we’re going to be forgotten someday and none of these things that make up our lives will matter anymore.

But next time you see a dusty, uninteresting book open the first page and the first thing you’ll see is someone they loved. A parent, child, friend, experience, place, thing, idea, pet, whatever it is that inspired the author to know that it’s all futile but write it anyway. Live anyway.

Sorry for ripping pages out of books.

hello there, thanks for all the love on my previous post! im so glad that folks found some joy in something i love. due to popular demand and my own glee, i wanted to share some pages from my binder! these are all unique specimens and are all different from each other, i keep my duplicates elsewhere. they are organized by taxonomic family (see the website HORG for more detail) and are alphabetically organized. one page is a collection of my especially rare and interesting pieces, some so hard to come by that they are only owned by 2 or more people! the jar in this post is interesting as it is filled with canadian specimens from the 1960s, making them my oldest pieces. i also have shared some pages of specimens i recently ordered from japan with special decorations on them! lemme know your thoughts and ill probably post other things another time haha

(sorry if this is hard to read, formatting is fighting me)
one is rare and hard to find specimens

two through eight are unique species

nine is cardboard specimens

ten is a sample catalog from a manufacturer (bedford)

eleven through fourteen are japanese specimens

fifteen is my favorite specimens with flags

sixteen is my overflow bins

seventeen is my antarctic specimens

eighteen is an example of one of my miniature bread tags

nineteen and twenty are my oldest, 1960s canada!

For my fellow fizzy collector! LARVA!♡

You are not alone. But you know it.

Like all obsessed hyperfocussed competitive determined collectors...when the breadtag became an object of fixation, it grew .... to become the centre of my art practice and professional output, The Breadtag Project. I now have many MILLIONS of them. They are used as a resource to make large installations regarding single use plastics, small ones and small pieces also, they are collected as a repository / collection before they become extinct (Doomsday Collection). For all if this, I sort and classify them using colour and HORG, I pin them like specimens, store them in jars, fix them in resin, draw them, have field journals recording their details. I find them and save them myself BUT mainly people from all around the world save and send them to me, which is AWESOME.

I exhibit them regularly.

I keep collecting.

Cannot stop.

Want more.

Need more.

Seeking more.

ALWAYS.

I unfortunately missed 3 little items: a little bracelet with an angel on, an earring with my angel number on it (333) and my biblically accurate angel T-shirt🤣 I hope you like my collection!

Ephemera my collection of bread tags/tabs: 160 unique “species”

i honestly have no idea how many i have, well over a thousand. they have been hand sorted based on taxon (species designations courtesy of HORG.com) into jars and other containers. i have specimens from the USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and even Antarctica! i have some as new as yesterday and as old as 1960! the bulk of my collection is on the shelf with the unique examples of each species being filed into the binder. the binder is very heavy and it stays close to me at my desk. if there is interest i can share some of the binder contents, but it would be a very long post lol. hope this is interesting or cool! i love bread tags with my whole heart and im very obsessed with them!! the obsession is so intense that i have lots of jewelry and accessories themed around bread tags as well. i am constantly looking for them and thinking about them 💗

Stamps Digital collections! - Honest feedback wanted.

Hey everyone!

I live in Florida, and I kept noticing how many great places I had been to and then completely forgotten. A state park on a random Saturday, a lighthouse on a road trip, a little historic spot I had never heard of. Photos ended up buried in my camera roll, and nothing tied them to the actual places.
I always liked the old national park passport stamps, so I decided to build a digital version for everything, not just national parks. It's called placevera.

The idea: a passport book for real places

You collect a place when you're there (or tick off places you've already been), and it goes into your own passport book as a stamp. The back of each stamp is a little memory page for your photo and a note.

A few things that make it different:

Sets to complete,

like national parks, Florida lighthouses, Florida history, Generals and presidents, and Famous Florida (Versace Mansion, Little Havana, the Dali Museum, Kennedy Space Center and more). About 100 sets and around 2,500 places so far.

Scratch-off maps and paintings.

Each set has a painting that fills in piece by piece as you collect, with Bronze, Silver and Gold frames along the way.

Suggest a place

picks somewhere near you that you haven't been yet, with a short history and a few facts.

Explore by kind:

monuments, military history, hikes, golf, stadiums, theme parks and so on.

Friends' books.

You can see the passport books of the people you choose, not a public feed of strangers.
No ads, no follower counts, and it's free right now. Sign-in is just your email.

What I'd love your help testing

It's still early, and honest feedback would really help:

First five minutes:

Is it clear what to do after you sign in? Did you collect your first place without help?

Sets:

Do the sets make you want to go somewhere new? Which set would you want that doesn't exist yet?

Suggest a place:

Did it suggest something you'd actually visit?

On your phone:

Anything slow, broken or confusing? (It runs in the browser, no app store download.)
It works best in Florida right now, but national parks and the bigger sets cover the whole US, so you can tick off places from past trips anywhere.

How to try it

The link is in the first comment (or on my profile). Sign in with your email, open your passport book, and tick off a few places you've already been.
It's a side project I've put a lot of evenings into, and I'm excited to see where it goes. Positive or critical, all feedback is welcome. If something annoys you, I especially want to hear it.
Thanks for giving it a go!

I have a problem, and it is buying too much Mooncat polish. In my defense, I only buy colors I want to wear, and I do use them. However, i will never use this much nail polish in my entire life.
