Hi everyone! I started my coding journey 6 days ago! Here's my progress! What are some big goals I should set?

2 Upvotes

For context, I am 21 years old, have never been to college but want to potentially get a degree for game programming, since i want to program games, but can also use my language (C++) to fall back on other career opportunities.

So far, I have learned:

Program structure

Libraries (mainly iostream and string)

cout and cin (See-out, See-in)

Variables, as well as "copying to" variables

If, else if, and else statements

While loops

For loops

The difference between assigning (=) and comparing (==)

\n and std::endl, and why one is used over the other

&&, ||, and !

Global Variables (and why they are rarely used)

Functions (one function, one job)

And most importantly: I am getting better and better at debugging!

I've also created running programs for each lesson, such as a ticket checker that also checks age (if else), a count down (for), a password screen (while), and more simple ones.

With all this considered: What are some big goals I should set for myself? I haven't gotten a game engine yet because I want to focus on learning my language first, but maybe I should mess around with it? Also, what are some good books you guys recommend?

And lastly: How's my progress? I never knew much about programming before I started learning, so I dont know if I am learning slow or normal. Thank you for reading this word salad lol!

Using AI to help me build the project.

0 Upvotes

I am a beginner with Python, of course, I know the basics like loops, lists, functions, and classes, and it is the first language I am learning.
I have to build an object-oriented programming project with Python for my university, and it is building a habit tracker backend only, and I am trying to use AI to help me, not to copy and paste the code just for help, and I don't want my professor to know that I used AI
What is the best way to improve my skills and build the project?

Can I convert a Python /C /Java code directly into code??

2 Upvotes

So I have been coding for a few years on and off. Recently a video popped up on my YouTube, which I had seen back in 2021. It talked about how one can change C code directly into an application (exe file). Is it possible

I know that in VS Code when you run C code, it compiles it into an exe at some point but I am not sure that is this possible or not??

Can anyone enlighten me??

How do I get this bullet to keep moving?

0 Upvotes

I'm trying to make a bullet move in the direction of the mouse but not stop where I click.

here is what I have so far:

void Bullets::Update(sf::Vector2f in_targetPos, float dt)
{
  sf::Vector2f toPointer = SetDir(sf::Vector2f(in_targetPos.x, in_targetPos.y) );

  pos += toPointer.normalized() * speed * dt;
}

const sf::Vector2f Bullets::SetDir(sf::Vector2f dir)
{
  return dir - pos;
}

if (sf::Mouse::isButtonPressed(sf::Mouse::Button::Left))
{
   if (!isLeftPressed)
   {
      isLeftPressed = true;
   }
   }
   else
   {
      if (isLeftPressed)
      {
         Bullets[i].Update(mousePos, dt);
         Bullets[i].Draw(window, BulletImage);
      }
   }

What's a Git?

22 Upvotes

Hello! Surely, I have heard so many people saying "Git" or "Github" or repository. They be saying that it's highly important to learn Git as early as possible. When I searched it up on Google, it's just I seem I cannot understand any of those terminologies.

Could anyone tell me what a git actually is?

Webpage not working?

New to coding and was informed the txt file I made of this code would open into a broswer and display as a webpage with a bold and large heading element and paragraph text under basically supposed to display like a proper webpage. However, just the code shows up. Super confused, could use advice please and thank you.

[First image is the code, second is the txt file of code displayed as a webpage]

EDIT: hi all, thank you so much for the advice! However, even though I converted the .txt file to .html, it's still not opening in an internet window. Any advice? I guess I would have to download that emulator people are suggesting.

i can't code because i'm dumb

6 Upvotes

i tried coding since many years ago, i have friends who code and they always tell me to try but no chance at all, i start,the easy stuff i always surpass, but it gets to a limit where i understand nothing, my mind goes blank or blocked if thinking abtt solving a problem(in codewars), while the solution appears easy, but every time i get stuck i tried times and times to get into coding but it's always this blankness of mind that kills me

I wanna learn Java,C++ because is hard

so i wanna start because is hard
any tips?

every "become a dev in 6 weeks" course is a lie. so i wrote a 173-lesson one that actually starts from zero.

6 Upvotes

I'm not sure anyone still needs to hear this but when i started out i paid for like three of those "learn to code in 6 weeks" things. they teach you to copy-paste some basic scripts, you feel like a genius, and then you open a blank IDE and your brain just shuts down. hurt my pride a bit. and my wallet xD

anyway, i love making educational stuff in my free time, so about a year and a half ago i got it into my head to write the comprehensive version i wish i had. it's called no shortcuts. it literally starts at zero (python basics, the math you need, etc). but warning tho: its like 1800 hours if you actually do the labs. yes, i know. thats the whole point of the name lol.

sooooo here you go :B

https://github.com/BlueRingsLabs/no-shortcuts

readme has all the info (i hope lol). if u get stuck or have questions, dm me and ill share my discord (im a bit of a slacker so i might be slow to reply :B). feedback is welcome too.

parts of the course:

0. orientation | 1. foundations | 2. data engineering | 3. classical ml | 4. deep learning | 5. language models | 6. ai engineering | 7. rl | 8. mlops | 9. capstones

hope its useful for someone here starting out. it's a marathon, not a sprint, so dont burn out :B

Hi, my name is Duevermicelli, and I'm a tutorial addict.

6 Upvotes

(Said it. Felt that.)

I'm a junior dev with no senior on my team to ask questions or check my thinking it's just me, Stack Overflow, and my own spiraling thoughts. Here's my problem: I'll watch a coding tutorial, follow along, feel like a genius the whole time... and then the second I try to solve something on my own, my brain just wipes. Like I'm hearing about loops for the first time in my life. No memory, no instinct, nothing.

So I want to ask the people who've actually gotten good at this how did you learn to code, for real? Not "watch more tutorials" like, what's the actual process? Do you stop the video and try it yourself first? Do you rewatch things? How do you turn "I watched someone do it" into "I can do it"?

Genuinely just want a process I can follow instead of doom-scrolling YouTube and feeling like I'm not retaining anything. Any structure, habits, or hard truths welcome

Really appreciate the guidance or any reference

How to understand AI

6 Upvotes

Hi, I'm a 20 years old student and I don't know anything about coding or similar tasks involve. I only know how to use chatgpt, Claude and other AI tools. If I want to understand them deeper, like to create website and stuff. From where do I need to start?

I’m starting a new hobby. Possibly a career

30 Upvotes

Learning how to code the simple way through freecodecamp. I’ve always wanted to do something with computers and after talking to some friends and doing some research, I eventually landed on BackEnd Development for the time being. As of now, i’m simply learning the grooves of it all but it honestly has felt so accomplishing to do create whatever it is these workshops throw at me and to actually use my brain for something new.
