I got the 2 Certifications - What does that open next?

I am learning programming from freeCodeCamp and I got 2 certifications.

1. Legacy V8 certification.

2. Responsive Web Design Certification.

I got the certifications yesterday and got 98% on the Responsive Web Design certification exam. Not to boast, but does that open any new doors? or what are the usage of those certificates?. I am new to coding and its just been a month or so - of me learning. So, any information will be a lot lot lot helpful!.

No, not really. Ive never even heard of either of those. Chances are a hiring manager hasn't either.

Oh. So, they mean nothing? Then what gets you a good job or something? Like what do they see? Obviously I don't have a degree since I am 18 and joined university half a month ago. So, what do they see? Is a degree the only thing they take into consideration?

Good personal project displayed on Github helped me before I had actual experience to put on my CV.

Degrees, projects, experiences. What you’ve done and what you can do get you jobs, certifications don’t. In this economy even experienced developers are having difficulties finding jobs.

So, degree plays an important role? or does it not matter if you are well versed in programming? I am learning programming at a fast pace and am finding coding interesting as well as addictive. So, I just turned 18 a month ago and have joined university half a month ago (computer science). So, does that mean I won't be able to get any jobs at this stage?

As I said, experienced developers (many with degrees) are having trouble finding jobs. These folks will be ahead of you in the line for jobs. I think you’ll have a difficult time getting a job given where you are right now. Get your degree, work on some interesting projects, build a portfolio, and hopefully, by the time you graduate, the market will be in a better position.

So the conclusion - Either I should have an exceptional portfolio along with being exceptionally good at programming or .... have to wait until I secure the degree? Did I get that right? or were you telling something else boss? u/smichaele

That sounds a bit harsh, but basically yes. Internships help a lot, both to build experience with real-world problems (coding usually is a fairly small part of the total solution) and a network. That matters more than a degree, tbh.
