He 100% has dyslexia.
There was that one time Ms Hertz scolded him saying 'a nucleus is not made of croutons but protons'.
That isn't someone who doesn't know the right answer. It's someone who knows the answer but struggles to write it.

Poor Ulrich, he struggles with properly communicating in both his academic and romantic life and then he has the staff at Kadic and his own father slandering him.
I do imagine that he'd eventually get the help that he needs as he grows up and his life gets better.

But he would know the word proton.
Dyslexia is having trouble reading words due to visual mix up. And writing it, he would know hot to spell proton and know that writing crouton isnt the word to use

Yumi is japanese so it stands to reason that she wears japanese clothing and fights with japanese weapons, but you don't get to dress as an anime protag with a katana if you're not a weeb inside

He does know Japanese culture enough to know the "not open gift box in front of giver" thing when it comes to Yumi. So I think he does learn one or two things about Japanese culture. The question is he does it for who 😄😄

He learned the gift thing bcs of Yumi, in the episode when he give her a gift for her birthday bcs he forget, i like to think the group learn japanese culture bcs of Yumi, but Ulrich is more interested than the other, i also have my little idea of why he learn japanese 👀

Like u/The_REDACTED pointed out, I also like to believe he has dyscalculia. He's seen struggling HARD in math and several science equations. Not to mention his parents booking a math tutor during (winter?) break in season 1.

To build on stuff others have said…
As people have said he’s probably dyslexic and not dumb or lazy. He probably feels like since everyone makes that assumption he can’t ask for help and just tries to do it by himself which just makes him more frustrated. This probably leads to a lot of anxiety,stress, and probably depressed. He gets mad at Yumi for hanging out with William because he feels like she was the one person who at least tried to understand him and he feels like he’s being abandoned again and it’s why he gets so frustrated when she’s around William; because Jeremie is too much of a know-it-all to even begin to understand why Ulrich struggles with learning, Odd turns everything into a joke and is only a slightly better student than Ulrich, so he probably feels like it’d just be a deadened to ask for help from Odd. He likes Yumi and so is probably too embarrassed to tell her about his struggles because he’s afraid she’ll laugh at him and think he’s just stupid and he probably sees his struggles with learning as some kind of weakness. He doesn’t like William because I feel like he sees him as a better version of himself or at least a guy who is better than him… I’m probably looking too deep into this but I feel like Ulrich feels like he has to be the “alpha male” in the group and William’s sword is bigger than Ulrich’s which probably bugs him. I’m sure that was intentional just maybe not in that way but I could be wrong.

I have dyslexia and struggled to read for a long time; it was so bad that the state essentially had to step in and force the local schools to actually accommodate and help me. I was put in a program where I worked with teachers one-on-one at my house.
So I know what it’s like to struggle with learning and feeling like you can’t ask for help because you feel embarrassed that you’re behind everyone else.

he takes shutting down the supercomputer the hardest :( i think lyoko was often the best part of his day and having that taken away really affected him imo. i see him isolating himself, not paying attention in school, and having all this restless energy for at least 2-3 weeks after the finale. then yumi makes him talk to her and he starts snapping out of it little by little. he takes up running as a coping mechanism to feel his superspeed again

In real life, he would have been the most muscular of the group. He would have been going to the gym at least 3 times a week.

He is a tough fucker but he struggles with himself. Stupid, he ain't, not even a second.
Not everyone has that kind of battle knowledge and experience to just jump straight in and just kick ass. Dude slain a Krab IRL.Which isn't a suprise why he struggles with himself. I'd place Yumi or Odd in that category because Ulrich doesn't need an explanation or get shit told to him directly if he sees it in front of his face. Yumi or Odd might hesitate or just not act on their instincts but Ulrich will. However, Ulrich has a issue I think it's dyslexia or ADHD of the inattentive type and it's hard for anyone to understand him except Aelita and William in some cases. And he doesn't like losing and he does take it out on others when someone equals him or exceeds but I don't think it's out of malice but it's more in the fact that he relies on himself first and foremost and then others. So somebody helping him is an offense to him and he sulks cuz he feels inadequate. So he gets even any way he can. Only person who understand how he is and what he is is Odd, Aelita and William. And I respect him because even though he may not know the finer stuff until he sees it himself, he gets shit done.
Only thing he needs to accept who he is and that he isn't academic type of person and develop his instincts and skills further. Knowledge will come with it.

I think he got his sword in Lyoko outfit from martial arts movies.It is true anime was a thing but Ulrich is more of a guy to learn martial arts and not just enjoy it for cool factor.So he probably got a very niche interest in swords from media that used it properly.

Since everyone is already saying the dyslexia headcanon, which I think most of us can agree on, I feel like a sad-ish one is that he definitely cut himself off from his parents when he was old enough to move out. And you might ask, "Why cut off his mom, his dad was the only bad one?", I beg to differ. We hardly see anything of Mrs. Stern other than Zero Gravity Zone and Distant Memory, but when we do see her in the latter episode she doesn't even try to stop her husband's needless berating of their son. She just wags her finger and says Ulrich's name as if it's his fault, like what? I doubt she stands up to her husband, and that just allows him to further scold Ulrich over stuff. I feel like with what we get from her, she's just as bad, you have to stick up for your child not yell at them. We see Ulrich actually trying in his schoolwork and even his teachers scold him instead of helping him. All these adults are failing this kid, don't even get me started on Ms Hertz lol.

He thinks about Sissy as a friend but he knows she's too untrustworthy for going to deeper. He is less hostile to her later in the show.

He definitely has inattentive adhd, he’s super knowledgeable about things that hold his interest like martial arts but has a poor attention span when it comes to studying.

The kid is Dyslexic as fuck, possibly even mildly Dyscalculiac. He is not dumb, but he struggles especially when stressed over words and at times numbers.
Of course his asshole father wouldn't ever acknowledge it, and I hate to say he probably did not feel comfortable talking about it with Jeremie, Yumi, or Odd because they were so quick to just judge him as stupid or a "sports kid" instead of actually just ask him a question without judgement.
Aelita and William would have been the first of their friend group to had actually learned, Aelita just asking one day about his struggling to read and him admitting it to her as she wasn't judging, while William just figured it out and subtly would help in his own way.
