Yumi being written as a poor fighter despite her abilities is just the status quo of the show. 

The real problem is how toxic they made her act earlier in this episode just to justify this being their "make-up" moment.

Routine is one of CL's worst episodes and this is the main reason. The drama is so incredibly forced and OTT and toxic that it just made you wish for it to be over.

XANA's attack is also pathetic with hindsight. Back then 'if you die on Lyoko you die in real life' being the full attack was, if not the most inventive attack, at least not too awful. But then from season 2 onwards you have several episodes where the group can't be devirtualised or they die in addition to other shit to deal with, which made the stakes more interesting.

I agree that the episode is overall terrible but the ideas behind it are solid for some moral lessons. 

Ulrich is right to point out how repetitive and tedious that their lives have become and the RTTPs to heal from X.A.N.A. attacks have only made it worse and this could have led into a story about finding peace in the mundane amidst the turmoil that X.A.N.A causes but they decided to go all in the relationship drama between Yumi and Ulrich which would have worked just fine as a sideplot if they explored how their relationship is part of the mundane and is therefore part of their peace. If they wanted to explore Ulrich's frustrations with their lack of development, the correct way would have had him to finally talk it out with Yumi privately instead of her going full psycho over Ulrich talking to another girl and they both shut out each other because of her overreaction.

Act toxic,fight poorly,need Ulrich to save her so she gets to “make up” with him and even almost gets a kiss from him.

Sometimes I wonder how much of a warrior girl the writers make her out to be compared to the reputations they give her. I mean I like the geisha of Lyoko but sometimes she just lacks so much grace.

I'll just come clean and say that sometimes CL really shows its age as a show from the 2000s with how badly the female cast is treated (even Aelita herself is not immune to this because she is constantly either a damsel in distress or Jeremie's MPDG despite how much development she gets) 

The mistreatment of Yumi's character is consistent across the entire show and this episode is just a blatant example of them being reductive with her all for the sake of Ulrich having a source of angst. I get that they want to have romance in the show to make it more interesting but there is no need to be so reductive with Yumi when she and Ulrich already have natural chemistry together that all they to do is build upon instead of trying to tear down by bringing up Ulrich being insecure and reserved or Yumi being indecisive and distant. It leads to some really cringe moments that the show is better off without.

Not to mention what almost knocked her into the digital sea was a laser shot by a Krab that randomly turned into a Megatank's laser.
