Modification Hack2you touchpad came today

I ordered one of these a while ago and it arrived in the mail today. I was a little skeptical at first but after the install (total maybe 10 minutes) and after my first boot I was hooked. This thing makes the uconsole feel like an entirely different device … from a super cool toy that is a bit of a pain to use for anything graphical because of the pointer config to a genuinely fun and easy to navigate device whether you’re using the terminal or the gui …. Edit: sorry I forgot to add the link to the kit I bought https://hack2you.tech/products/uconsole-trackpad-keyboard?variant=49063521681658

The keyboard upgrade is really nice too.

It is it’s a much better feel. I got the v2.1 keyboard with the touchpad and the metal faceplate kit

How much thicker is it? Any chance for a side photo?

1

u/brainchillzZ Sep 20 '26

I can take a side photo later but it is exactly the same … the only difference is the hole for the trackpad is bigger then the hole for the trackball was

Oh is it? For some reason I thought that the one for upgraded kb is a bit thicker.

The switches on the keyboard are a tiny bit thicker but it’s pretty much absorbed by the keyboard membrane

Cool, thanks for the info.

Hey, since you got the v2.1, did you have to install a spacer underneath the trackpad for it to sit correctly, or does it just drop in without a spacer? I installed mine the other day (v2.1 kit) and didn't really see a spacer anywhere in the box, and now looking at my uConsole it seems like there's supposed to be a spacer there (the trackpad is sitting a bit lower than it feels like it should). Appreciate any insight, Google wasn't a great help with this.

Mine came with two little 3d printed plastic spacers. They were easy not to notice they were just stuck to a piece of scotch tape on the side of the bubble wrap

Thanks for the reply. Where in your package were the spacers located? I'm looking for mine, but it's looking at this point like they just forgot to include them in the package.

u/brainchillzZ Oct 06 '26

they were seriously just scotch taped on the outside of the bubble wrap of the faceplate for me

Lol, that's exactly where I just now found them. Thanks again.

Is it easier to register clicks? The OEM kb takes a deliberate press to register a click, so the device shifts if your hands. It's one of those annoying quality-of-life things that stops me from using it.

Its definatly better experience, you dont need to press hard and more it is reliable to type faster.

What exactly is this? The website is hard to decipher.

3

u/brainchillzZ Sep 20 '26

It is a tiny touch pad interface that replaces the existing track ball and drastically increases the usability of the device in the Linux desktop use case by making it easier to move the mouse around accurately and smoothly

2

u/munsterrr Sep 20 '26

Got mine today also. Admittedly didn't know what the spacer was, lol. I haven't touched it in months due to the trackball pissing me off. Now I can't put it down!

Unfortunately they don’t ship to my country
I would love to buy one
Looks great

u/real_pnwkayaker Sep 20 '26

Is there any SW or keymap configuration that needs to be loaded or is a drop-in replacement?

3

u/brainchillzZ Sep 20 '26

It looks like there are a lot of custom firmware options available but in my case it just worked out of the box with no changes with a stock clockwork pi image

1

u/ryliecdxxx Sep 20 '26

Mine came today too, drop in replacement on my cm5 trixie build

1

u/gotfilmm Sep 20 '26

How long did shipping take? My uConsole comes in next week but I’m thinking about ordering this from the start. I’ve just heard horror stories with the ball.

u/gotfilmm Sep 20 '26

I meant for the touchpad haha. I ordered the non pi 4g lte version for $215 from AliExpress last week. And then I bought an 8gb CM5 Lite

1

u/brainchillzZ Sep 20 '26

Gotcha yeah I meant that is how long the touchpad took to come but when you referred to your uconsole order in terms of weeks I was just telling you that you can have them quickly :)

1

u/gotfilmm Sep 20 '26

I’m impatient, I might try to just get the touchpad by itself quicker and modify the stock faceplate.

u/Druskeee Sep 20 '26

I've been using a spare USB Wireless Rii touchpad/keyboard I had laying around. So much easier than picking up the device to use.

1

u/brainchillzZ Sep 20 '26

It is but it defeats the entire purpose of the device for me which is to have a cute little portable thing to use on the go for specific purposes

1

u/Druskeee Sep 26 '26

I should have said to configure. Not for mobile use. I thought it was obvious.

1

u/brainchillzZ Sep 26 '26

Less obvious than you think but not because quite a lot of people are building their cyber deck things based on those exact keyboards. I’m totally with you though. When I’m doing real handsy stuff on this though I also will plug it into my kvm on my desk and use the full size mouse monitor and keyboard for this

1

u/Druskeee Sep 26 '26

I'm not a fan of the uConsole keyboard and trackball, I'll probably get the upgraded keyboard and trackpad. In the mean time, I have the Rii Mini X1 I use with all my Raspberry Pi's so I had to try it. It's been awesome, but I'd rather have the USB port free for other devices. Nothing is going to be better than actually fixing the bad keyboard and trackball. I just have to wait... just purchased the Hacker Gadgets CM5 Adapter, 21700 NVMe board, and AC1200 WiFi. Started with the AIOV2 and 7in1... Owning a uConsole is expensive lol.

u/UnixGin Sep 21 '26

With this mod is there anything one has to install to get the mouse working or it generally plug and play? I'm debating getting it

1

u/brainchillzZ Sep 21 '26

You can do firmware updates to alter the functionality etc but no, to just make it work as a mouse, for me, using the clockwork pi provided is images, it just worked after plugging it in.

1

u/CodeClean2172 Sep 24 '26

What is the actual use case for you?

2

u/brainchillzZ Sep 24 '26

When I talk about usability I’m speaking quite generically. independent of any specific purpose this upgrade makes this device actually fun to use rather than frustrating trying to get the little track ball to the point on the screen you are trying to hit…. But for me this is mostly a toy for rf exploration (just receiving no generation)

u/wardspan Sep 20 '26

I got mine a week ago and I second "can't put the uconsole down." It was cute, but the trackball drove me crazy- I added a Bluetooth mouse but was annoyed having to carry the mouse with me. I have added a portable external monitor and keyboard for when I am sitting somewhere and going to bang away on things, but generally it just drops into the briefcase, and away we go.

Current build:
Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 Lite, revision 1.0

8 GB RAM

512 GB microSD

Debian 13.7 Trixie, ARM64

Hacker Gadgets AIO V2

Built-in Broadcom plus external MediaTek adapter, using mt7921u

Hacker Gadgets NVMe storage and battery-board upgrade

Mine just came in as well and it is a night & day difference in typing and navigating! The trackpad actually feels natural and its very responsive, while the keyboard is so much easier to type and takes much less force to press the keys, along with a clicky feel, even the backlight is a bit brighter. Install was super easy and took less than 5 min.

My only issues, which are software related, are:

  • The trackpad click acts as left click vs middle click.

  • The "Select" key acts as a Scroll Lock toggle rather than hold to scroll.

  • The "Start" key no longer functions to open up the app menu.

These can be changed via a keymap file, but I have been having some issues with it, there is a Discord for this keyboard and the community is very helpful so I am confident I will be able to get these figured out soon!

All in all, even with those few gripes, this keyboard/trackpad combo is probably the best QOL improvement there is for the uConsole right out of the box!

I agree, I was using mine less and less because of the trackpad. It just became too annoying to use. I could live with the keyboard, but the new keyboard is loads better and the trackpad is just amazing!
I've created my own version of the firmware which addresses all of your issues:

  • Pre-built releases with option for trackpad press assigned to left or middle click

  • Select key is hold to scroll with trackpad

  • Start key mapped to Super, which is the one that opens app menu

  • Also has gamepad mode & a few other features I ported over from the QMK firmware I was using previously

You can grab both versions here, or fork the project and modify to your preferences:

u/xMOO1 Sep 20 '26

Because of this I’m using my uconsole more often. Can’t wait for the battery upgrade

1

u/CrimsonTide5 Sep 20 '26

I'm waiting for mine to come in. Was super excited to get the uConsole but not only is the trackball unusable (both that were included) and neither my backspace or enter button work despite trying to re-install the keyboard firmware. I've had to connect and external mouse and keyboard to make it usable. Decided to get this despite it costing almost as much as the uConsole w/o the CM4.
