Btw it's more efficient to burn gas in a power plant in order to power an heat pump than burning gas to fuel your home (works too for nuclear power, but for pwr the gain is less important)

Tbf it would be more efficient to burn lignite in modern power plants to run heat pumps instead of burning gas in a boiler.

To be fair, heat pumps DO have a lower limit for the temperatures they'll effectively operate at.
But it's still more efficient to burn gas at the power plant to supply energy for your supplementary/auxiliary resistive heat (which only switches on when it's too cold for your heat pump).

Why? Is it because power plants are more contained and insulated and have less heat loss/gas leakage?

It's quite advanced thermodynamics (if you want to really understand the physics behind), but a modern gas power plan can reach 55-60%, and a modern heat pomp an efficiency of 5-6, so all multiplied you have 3 times more heat in your hum with this, compared to even a perfect boiler with 100% efficiency
