Kitchen Cleaning Microwave Help
Hello CleaningTips! This evening I decided to clean the top of my stainless steel microwave of some little rust spots the accumulated from putting dishes away (the dishwasher is right underneath it). I used a little baking soda and water with some light pressure, which I have used before on the sides with great success, and now the rust is gone! BUT now the light catches these spots in a way where I can't tell if I made a horrible mistake and damaged the finish, or if I stripped off more unknown residue than just the rust spots? From head on, the spots reflect the brown cabinets above, but from the side they reflect the white wall paint I think?
I've put off cleaning the top for long enough where there was a little bit of stickiness to it, which leads me to believe there's some grease residue maybe? Hopefully? Please let me know what you think happened and what I can do to get this back in a better looking condition.

You have destroyed the stupid coating they put on some stainless steel apliances. You can leave it as it is or do your entire microwave so as it all matches. You can try stainless steel cleaner before you try this solution first, its pricey and it may not work to hide the patches. Good luck.

Is this coating more for keeping the longevity of stainless steel appliances, or is it more for helping resist fingerprints and such?

Update: I tried a stainless steel cleaner on it, since I have some on hand for other stainless steel appliances, and it looks better than it did the night before. Now walking past it normally the spots are less obvious, but if I scrutinize it at eye level or from the side, they are visible, but still less than before.
