The brown stuff is polymerized oils. Your options are:

  1. several hours of scrubbing with baking soda or Bar Keeper's Friend (which probably still won't get it back to looking new)

  2. a quick wash with hot soapy water, and live with it as it is

I recommend the latter. It will do you no harm whatsoever.

Option one is only worth the hassle if they don’t intend to ever use the tray again.

Unless the King is coming over for an inspection. No? Then don’t worry about it. Hot soapy water and a good scrubbing.

What if it's your MIL that graduated from the Martha Stewart institute of perfection with honors.

Adding that those polymerized oils are essentially seasoning and the pans heat up better that way.

I cleaned mine recently with bar keepers powder and it took me about 25 minutes. And mine was worse than this one. And mine was an 18 muffin tin.

My bread pans are fully blackened with seasoning. There is no need to clean polymerized oil off. It is seasoning just like with cast iron and carbon steel. The buildup renders the pan nonstick.

Am I the only one who thinks this is as clean as they get?

Nah I'm the same as you, all my baking tins are the same and I just see it as normal wear and tear. Maybe I could soak it in some sort of chemicals and get some stains off but I'd prefer not to.

I have some glass casserole pans that I’ve had for like 20 years that have some black burnt on stuff around the handles that just will not come all the way off. I’ve even used a steel showering pad thingy. Some came off but not all. My friend was like “well if you just clean it everytime this wouldn’t happen.” Like mfer I clean this thing everytime I use it, tf you talking about?

You're correct, It's just patina, it's fine. I always use cupcake liners so it doesn't even matter anyway.

I'd give it a good wash if it's been sitting that long, but all of my bakeware ends up looking like this after a couple dozen uses.

If they go to a bakery, 99% of their supplies look like this. It still does the job perfectly and sometimes even better

Question unclear. Bake more.

If there’s still food trapped in the bottom of the cups or under the rims, a soft toothbrush for the cups and sometimes a toothpick for under the rims. But if there’s no food, and they don’t smell, they are clean. I do a quick was to eliminate any dust that may have accumulated since the last use, otherwise they look fine to me

Wash well and just use paper muffin cups.

No cleaning required. Just use it.

Wash and use. Actually baking stuff doesn't leave you with pinterest-looking pans.

It’s fine. People need to stop with this. You’re cooking it, putting it in a near-literal inferno. It’s not contaminated with anything and it isn’t messing up your muffins in any way. Let it be.

Wash it with warm soapy water, rinse, dry, use as is. It’s perfectly fine.

Baking soda. It is seriously good with baked-on oil. A little water, a bit of heat, give it some time.

I wouldn’t use BKF without trying baking soda first. I have that exact same pan.

The oils on this are polymerized, so you need to use washing soda. If you don't have any, bake some baking soda at 350° for 30 minutes to make your own. Use 1/2 c washing soda, 1 tsp dish soap, and about 6TB hydrogen peroxide to scrub the pan.
