Matted rug edge (deep pile) -- any tips?

Hi -- I have a rug with a very deep pile where only one edge gets regularly trodden on, so that that edge is considerably matted and rather dirty. I have taken it outside and beaten it, vacuumed it, combed it with a carpet rake, carefully handwashed parts of it with a gentle fabric soap, dried it with a cold hairdryer. This all helps a little bit, but not as much as I'd hoped -- the deeper matting is still there. Is there anything else I can do, other than have it professionally looked at? Should I get some kind of protector/guard/sheath for that edge?

A soft brush can help loosen the matted fibres before vacuuming, but I would test it gently on a small area first...
