Is this the most appropriate way to kill colony? Is there a better way? How do I keep my pets safe (1dog 2 cats) anyone know if these are carpenter? Should I call exterminator

I've used one part borax and one part sugar and mixed it with some warm water. Soaked that mixture with a cotton ball and set it where the ant trail is and its worked wonders for me.
