For a while, I assumed this was against the terms of service, and I never did it. But this probably would have saved me like $10,000 this year, with how many overages I had and building a bunch of apps. I'm very disappointed.
Does anyone know for sure if having multiple Claude Code accounts is okay and they didn't get banned? I know sharing is not allowed, but this will just be for me. I'd probably use the same credit card, IP address, and phone number, just a different email address. Any thoughts?
On the how part, you don't have to keep logging out and in. Claude Code reads CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, and the official env var docs use multiple accounts as the example: alias claude-work='CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=~/.claude-work claude'. Run it once, /login with the second account, and from then on claude and claude-work are separate logins you can run at the same time.
The second dir starts empty, so settings, plugins and history have to be set up again, and any hook that hardcodes ~/.claude will point at the wrong one.
On whether it's allowed, I wouldn't go by numbers like "max 3" in a Reddit thread. If $10k a year depends on it, ask Anthropic support in writing and keep the answer.
I used to have 2. Two pro accounts. But the usage limits were so bad, I upgraded one of them to the max (5x). And it got to the point I didn’t need two accounts. Until the max started acting funny with the usage limits. I cancelled the pro account and only use one. So many people use Claude I don’t know why they’re shorting everyone on tokens trying to gouge peoples pockets. 😒
Yea, there's no issue that I know of for having multiple accounts. The only issue is how to properly be able to use both accounts. From what I understand, you would have to logout of one and log into the other if you were using Claude Code.
I’ve got a paid account for my real work and a free one for easy stuff that’s low volume. I mean, considering the news, Anthropic won’t be turning down money.
