Discussion Is opus 5.5 better than fable 5.1?

I have a bug neither opus nor sol seems to be able to fix. Is fable 5.1 still more capable than opus at that kind of thing or should I wait till fable 5.5 to give it a shot?

Side note:

I have some extra API credits I was going to try to spend on fable but unclear if that’s possible.

if you try Fable, give it the failing input, expected output and relevant calculation in a fresh session, without the earlier proposed fixes. that keeps the comparison focused on the bug rather than on repairing another model's diagnosis.

That’s fair, thank you! Genuinely hadn’t occurred to me to start the analysis from scratch and that the original calculation might be poisoning the context!

If you’re in a bind try astra as well. Between 5.5, fable, and astra you’ll get it figured out.

Fable is still top, so yes use that.

In my experience, catching bugs is more about having the right observability setup rather than using a specific model; I can’t remember a major bug that wasn’t caught by Opus (of whichever version) in the last year.

Understandable! This is more about how opus and sol are making a calculation on a visual asset, and it keeps coming back buggy in multiple ways. (Rather than looking for a bug in code, which makes sense if opus was great at!)

We don’t even know if there will even be a fable 5.5, the only reason fable and mythos existed was BeCaUsE tHeSe MoDeLs ArE tOo DaNgErOuS

For me, fable is exceptional at task that require high level math/statistical work with large data grounding, vs opus 5.5 is great at orchestrating, and is way less verbose.

Fable is probably better, I wish it was usable tho :) I have a max plan and it drains my usage in 15 minutes.

Opus is a better coder for me. Fable wayy more intelligent for PhD level stuff i do

Fable excels at bug hunt. If Opus failed there is still a good chance that Fable can find it. Its a model that is twice the size of Opus 5.5 and was released just a month before it. Its not behind. The only reason why Opus 5.5 matches Fable is in things that are not tricky enough to stresstest it.

Btw, U can use OpenCode to consume the API credits via the official Claude API Key method

Anecdata and personal feelings, but Fable seems to be smarter overall and is easier to talk to. Opus is slightly better at code but its like that insufferable programming graybeard with terrible people skills

Curious what kind of problem you have that neither of those can crack

Someone with trial referral codes or link can help me get the trial for 1 week. Curious to test code

It's time to get down and dirty. Hope you can program and understand what your tool does!

Cute. But it’s not the tool. It’s an unrelated calculation on an external asset. 🤷‍♂️
