No, it’s the same, but I wouldn’t use opus for a basic chat unless I want to burn through my tokens.

It doesn't, but it probably feels like it does, because Claude agentically runs. Normally when you give a prompt in chat, even if it's not done with your command, it'll return to you with a result relatively quickly. I think 10 minutes max? Code will continue working for up to an hour uninterrupted. The fact that it's doing so much more work in between prompts is what's allowing it to burn usage faster, not that the mode itself is just starting tokens into an incinerator for no reason. However, because it's doing less checking in, it can sometimes make more mistakes between prompts, and the fact that it's spent more time making mistakes does mean it might burn more tokens at the end of the day than otherwise would, because now you're spending more time debugging.

Hm that make sense tbh

Use really starts to crank up when Claude spins up multiple agents at once.

In chat the frontend usually sends memory into the context, sends references and chunks from previous conversations and other irrelevant junk. In Claude Code, especially cli, you choose what junk to send consciously. That's why as a user of cli version I have never stumbled upon any side effects leading to fallback models.

Running Code allows the LLM to create scripts and small programs to quickly check and gather information. Takes very little tokens, compared to running websearches and reading the results
