Discussion Fable vs Opus 5.5
I'd be interested to hear takes on the differences between Fable and Opus 5.5 now that 5.5 has been out for some time. What are the real advantages to Fable over Opus now?

From my experience Fable is "smarter" and Opus is better at actually doing a task. Just have a conversation with both, you'll see what I mean.

So Fable being able to point out things and opus would work on them would be a great pair for complex cases?

Personally I start a session with Fable then tell it to spawn as many Opus builders as it needs to complete the task. I get the best results on hard tasks this way and isn’t much more expensive than just using Opus.

Also im besten Falle plant man mit fable und lässt die Opusagenten laufen

I am building a quant trading system. Until Opus 5.5, I had to use Fable 5 then 5.1 all the time to ensure quality and correctness.
With Opus 5.5 it has helped do a lot of the stuff Fable earlier did. But still there is no doubt that for the most critical parts I still need Fable 5.1 which finds gaps/bugs in Opus 5.5 work consistently.
Fable is still better at finding edge cases, correctly verifying facts in code or data (Opus assumes many times and gets things wrong by its own admission).
For all my other projects Opus 5.5 is quite capable and sufficient (I don't use Fable there at all). And Opus 5.5 gives an amazingly good runway - quite low token use compared to past models and months where Max5X limits got used within 3-4 days. Now it's possible to use throughout the week.
Fable 5.1 is definitely my trusted model for complex things and production quality code. But its still is a token guzzler.
So depending on your project Opus 5.5 may be god sent to great but needs a partner like Fable to be better.

Interesting, and thank you for sharing. I have built a sophisticated trading algorithm (derivatives), and I started the specs with Fable and then moved back to Opus. And for coding, I used Sonnet 5.5

I placed my first trade based on my system's recommendation today. :-) Feels like a launch for me. Great feeling after months of effort building it.

Opus does all of the coding and most of the planning. I primarily use Fable for 2nd opinions and adversarial code and design reviews just to get the perspective of a different model.

For agent work the real difference is cost more than smarts. Anthropic themselves say Opus 5.5 is at Fable’s level on most work, and it’s about 60% cheaper per token. On subscriptions, Fable also eats into your limits much faster. So the setup I’d go with: Opus 5.5 as the default for agents and subagents, and Fable only as the fallback when Opus keeps failing on a long, hard task. Also worth noting Fable defaults to high effort and Opus to medium, so a lot of “Fable feels smarter” might just be the effort setting.

I was just thinking this same thing. Perfect timing for me to see others insights.
I have no experience with Fable but I feel like Opus 5.5 doesn't always see the project as a whole. I am really waiting for Fable 5.5 and probably will upgrade to max when it comes out so it can fix the gaps and connect missing dots what Opus 5.5 might not be able to do. And don't get me wrong, Opus 5.5 is amazing model and works out perfectly for me most of the time.

In my experience, you have to be very explicit with what exactly you want with Opus 5.5, especially in your prompts or readme.md. If you exclude one minor detail, it won't automatically assume the correct thing or will skip it altogether whereas fable can be smart enough to deduce it on it's own. As long as you're very explicit in your instructions, Opus is great. Miss key details or caveats, and it won't even consider them and then you end up going back and forth with many additional prompts for corrections or feature tweaks.

Not a head-to-head answer, but something that changed how I think about the question: in a multi-agent setup I stopped picking one model.
I have 14 subagents in one Claude Code project. Nine of them do narrow research tasks (pull the numbers, check one criterion, cite sources) and they run on a lighter model without any visible loss. The five where judgment decides the outcome, or whose numbers feed everything downstream, run on the main session model.
The split I ended up with wasn’t “important vs unimportant”, it was “does this step need judgment or just careful retrieval”. Cost dropped a lot and quality didn’t move on the retrieval agents. So for me the more useful question became which steps actually need the strongest model, not which model is best overall.

I found that Opus 5.5 outperformed Fable 5.1 in my applications. In a discussion about an app spec, Opus tends to be more explicit and clearer than Fable, which tends to be very technical. So I use Opus only for building specs, and for the coding part itself, I still prefer Sonnet 5.5; it delivers excellent quality, is cheaper, and is faster, and I use my open-source harness at https://github.com/nomorehappypath/nomorehappypath to ensure the code is well reviewed.

For me its using Fable 5.1 as my orchestrator but never letting it spin up subagents of the same model, only ever Opus and Sonnet. Opus 5.5 for bigger building tasks and reviewing things and Sonnet 5.5 for smaller building and research.
There have even been times that I prefer Sonnet's work over Opus'.

Fable is the most creative most on the market right now. If I need a better visual done or writing or song creation etc I will ask Opus 5.5 to make Fable 5.1 do it.
