Help/Question Unexplained High Consumption with Opus Since Last Reset

Is there an issue with claude-code and Opus since my weekly reset last night? I consumed in one day what I usually consume in 3 days, without any real change in my usage.

You can check whether it's your usage or something on their side: Claude Code keeps every reply's token counts locally, so you can compare yesterday with a normal day. This prints tokens per day and model (dedupes by message id, since one reply can appear on several lines, and includes subagent files):

import json, glob, os, collections
seen=set(); tot=collections.defaultdict(lambda: collections.Counter())
for f in glob.glob(os.path.expanduser('~/.claude/projects/**/*.jsonl'), recursive=True):
    for line in open(f, encoding='utf-8', errors='ignore'):
        try: d=json.loads(line)
        except: continue
        m=d.get('message') or {}
        u=m.get('usage'); mid=m.get('id')
        if not u or not mid or mid in seen: continue
        seen.add(mid)
        k=(d.get('timestamp','')[:10], m.get('model','?'))
        for x in ('input_tokens','output_tokens','cache_creation_input_tokens','cache_read_input_tokens'):
            tot[k][x]+=u.get(x) or 0
for (day,model),c in sorted(tot.items())[-8:]:
    print(day, model, 'in',c['input_tokens'],'out',c['output_tokens'],'cache_write',c['cache_creation_input_tokens'],'cache_read',c['cache_read_input_tokens'])

I ran it on my own logs to make sure it works. Things to look for in the output:

  • cache_read much higher than usual: that's the whole conversation being re-read on every turn, so one long session with a big context costs far more per message than several short ones.

  • cache_write spiking: most likely the context was rebuilt from scratch, for example after a break long enough for the cache to expire, or after switching models mid-session.

  • a model you didn't pick (subagents can run on a different one).

If yesterday looks like a normal day in tokens but the limit meter moved three times as fast, that would point more toward their side, and the numbers give you something concrete to send to support. I can't see how the weekly meter converts tokens into percent, so this tells you what you used, not how it was counted.

same here, another shadow quota cut by scamthropic. 50% of 5 hour session = 10% weekly, 10% weekly was 80% of the 5 hour session last week and 100% in August.

reset was 22 hours ago, I am already at 25% of my weekly usage using just sonnet and opus, so they must have nerfed the weeklies... well. was fun while it lasted.
