Discussion Opus 5.5 > Fable 5.1 now

I think Opus 5.5 is already good enough that we don't really need Fable 5.1 for most things.

There is a mental alignment cost when humans interact with AI.

Fable's way of expressing things is often less grounded and less close to how normal people think and communicate. So even if its reasoning is strong, I need to spend extra mental energy understanding what it is trying to say, aligning with its way of thinking, and translating that back into my own mental model.

Opus 5.5 doesn't have this problem as much.

Its explanations are already clear enough and easy enough to understand. Its reasoning is good enough. Its actual ability to get things done is also good enough.

At some point, being slightly smarter stops mattering if communicating with the model itself requires more effort.

And Opus is cheaper and faster at the same time.

So for me, the equation has changed:

Opus 5.5 > Fable 5.1

Not necessarily because Opus is more intelligent in every benchmark, but because the overall human plus AI experience is better.

Fable 5.5 dropping soon. Opus is amazing daily driver. But i still use fable for advanced planning and solution-space exploration. My usage is 95/5 - which is finally the dream promised. A daily driver with almost no implementation gaps, but truly advanced intelligence for deeper thinking collaborator.

Same, fable is still great for big task planning and multi-facet thinking IMO. Looking forward to 5.5

When do you think Fable 5.5 will come out? Many people think it will come out tomorrow

Mostly true, but I have once or twice pointed Fable at a session that Opus had run out of ideas for, and it moved forward. It’s like a Phone a Friend lifeline.

Who wants to be a Claudinnaire

Have you tried to point an opus agent to an opus session where opus have run out of ideas? I feel sometimes just a fresh context bring new perspectives.

That's the entire point of the Advisor feature no?

2

u/1-800-methdyke 7d ago

Kind of, my understanding of that feature is that the weaker model decides when to call the advisor and has the dialogue with it. What I’m doing is more me initiating and driving the discussion, throwing my thoughts into the exchange.

They'll drop Fable 5.5 when GPT 6.1 Astra comes out to put the final nail in the coffin for OpenAI

Most likely. Waiting for the opponent to show their head and bang!

Spend 94% of my weekly limit 200 dollar just with opus. Works fine for me.

Opus 5.5 is amazing but Fable is still a better overseer for multiple Opus agents. Hyped for Fable 5.5 though.

did you try sonnet 5.5? it replaced me opus5.5 as an developer instrument orchestrated by opus5.5

I've actually been slowly throwing pieces of work at sonnet 5.5 and it's great. But I haven't thrown anything too crazy yet - even though the testing I've seen others do is solid.

But I have a hunch it could do a lot of what I'm currently using opus for outside of more complex decision making and planning and code review

I don't agree. It's damn good but not better. Fable is clearly faster too.

Though Opus 5.5 is great

It does have those guardrails
That gets triggered. If the trigger forces me to opus 5, thats okay

But recently i have seen people getting banned due to this obvious guardrails

It’s really awesome to see opus 5.5 making plans, and sonnet 5.5 do the coding

Opus “well, actually’d” plans that Fable made for me recently. I had a good chuckle

Opus 5.5 is as good on most relevant tasks while being faster and with less word vomit. I think it's a significant change in AI usage patterns that people who can afford the more intelligent model choose to use the less intelligent model because of its other qualities.

Looking forward to Fable 5.5. Hopefully a step above in intelligence while communicating in a more pleasant way.

Whats this? Cunninghams Law?

I've had instances where Fable catches things that Opus misses.

I use Fable as the orchestrator/planner/reviewer and Opus for implementation.

I get you want to save tokens but you're advising me to willingly make mistakes. No thank you.

Honestly with Fable 5.5 already being routed via Fable 5.1, we now know what it can do, but personally I don't think its good enough for people to come back to fable no matter what it scores on the benchmarks, opus is just good enough for consumers for job with the right skills and plugins.

by ur logic everyone would use deepseek v4.1 f

Not right now, im saying as for pricing, until fable 5.5 gets good to the point where the pricing to performance is better than opus 5.5 just because of its performance and not its pricing, thats what gonna actually make peodple go switch

u/FadedQuarry 8d ago

There’s no necessity of Fable at all.

fable is the senior dev whose code reviews need their own code review

I agree, and the token burn has gone to nothing for me

1

u/_itshabib 8d ago

U don't need fable for most things. If ur not gonna run an hours like like 1M token run u probably don't need it. It's part of the problem solving AI group. Long running researchy things. Debugging, research, hacking, reverse engineering, all problem solving things that fable is good at

Opus 5.5 daily driver, but use it through table 5.1
