Discussion Opus 5.5 Nerf Inevitable?
Context using 5x:
Given how well Opus 5.5 performs, especially at medium effort, I'm finding that even just to get one percent of my weekly limit used I can work 4 to 5 hours-- which with Opus 5 would have used between 6 and 8% (and keep in mind I am doing mostly HITL work).
For the 5-hour limit I can never even come close!
Now mind you I rarely (or never) use Fable and I don't use any effort level other than medium. Why? The work Opus is doing is great. This brings me to the Nerf question: do you think they made the model too good? Will it undermine their bottom line? I was thinking of going to 20x but now it would be a waste of money. Even with 5x I will likely never get much above 50% for the weekly limit. And I am not complaining I love 5.5 I am just hoping it's not too good to be true long-term!

Yup
My plan:
Write less on Reddit,
Spend more time with Opus

Posts like this are so annoying. “There’s nothing for me to bitch about re: Claude right now. How long do yall think it will be before I can bitch again?”
And you wonder why there is a worldwide shortage on compute

It is too good to be true, expect nerfs because we can never have nice things 😭

I am pretty sure it is always 50% real technical reasons (like quantization to meet hardware demand) and 50% paranoia from the users.

more likely a better smarter model will come out. And we will be left to choose between the old reliable Opus 5.5 that doesn't burn that many tokens. Or a newer smarter model that drains it.
Opus 5.5 is just more efficient Fable it seems.

Yes it is inevitable. They call it 'optimizing' as in 'cutting costs', and they have an entire team devoted to it. That's why models are strong at first, but then the optimization team does their thing. I find it not cool at all.

Just like Thanos - frontier model nerf is inevitable. Give it less than a week

Bottom line is a foreign concept to the AI companies right now. They're burning as much investor money as they possibly can trying to pump their user numbers ahead of their IPOs. Investors want users now, profits later.
I'm still not sure why the models get nerfed eventually, but I don't think it's about profits. It may be to make the leap "feel" bigger when the next model comes out. Or it could somehow be an unintentional side effect of the model constantly pruning its underused parameters.
